    What's fun is to install a large windowed weatherproof boat hatch in the roof that allows you to climb out from the loft. Lots of uses beyond egress.
    You need some really high performance insulation in those unusual walls and ceilings, and a two-part closed cell foam spray in would give you 7 R-value per inch, vapor barrier, and an airtight enclosure. There are some really good DYI kits with what looks like a pair of propane tanks.
    If you have running water in a creek nearby, a microhydro system would assist the solar. Microhydro systems can produce a lot of power, even when it's dark or raining.
    Keep pouring rock on that steep hill part of the road, eventually you'll be able to drive a Lexus up there.

    • @50Acres
      @50Acres  6 лет назад +1

      I can actually fit out the loft window, it just isn't large enough to meet code. I am going to be spraying the underside of the cabin with one of those kits this spring hopefully. I'll also be adding 1.5 inches of rigid foam to the back of the cabin. The back is an easy install since there are no windows to flash around and only 1 door. The steep part of the road needs some work right now. I need more ditching to keep it dry. Then I will grade it and put some base stone down.

      50 Acres & a Cabin
      the boat hatch installed as a skylight would be in addition. i put just that in the off grid i built and it was very useful to get on the roof so easy and safe. plus lettin light and having a big vent that you can open in summer.
      rigid foam is good too, but not vapor tight unless you housewrap and tape.

    Very nice job, especially with the roof timbers. I used let-in ledgers on my 2 lofts also. Seems much stronger to me and as you mentioned, the loft joists hold the walls from spreading outwards. One of the reasons I picked my town is that there are no building codes; I can do all the work myself. Beautiful location you have. - Dave

      Hi Brandon, that's awesome, yurts are great. I think you feel closer to the outdoors inside them. You can hear the sounds of nature through the canvass walls. One thing I don't like about the cabin is when the windows are closed its hard to hear much outside. Once the walls are insulated we probably won't be able to hear anything at all.

    50 acre cabin...I have seen 4 or 5 if your videos and I have enjoyed them all. Plus, you seem like a nice guy. Which is why I don't understand your sarcastic reply to Ricard Clarkes comment on balloon framing & especially fire stops. I have always welcomed advise from professionals maybe rethink the firestops. Good traditional framing contractors can stack joist to studs to rafters (trusts) without missing a beat from basement to roof. And this is far stronger method.

    • @50Acres
      @50Acres  6 лет назад +2

      Yea, I do think it could be an issue. I'm actually going to frame up a partial wall and a false wall to isolate those electronics from the shower area. I'm thinking something along the lines of hidden passage way bookcase type thing so if anyone breaks in they may not realize there is expensive solar stuff in that corner of the house.

      thanks, was looking for another place too roost. looks just perfect. but way out of my income projection. I had bought a nice ten acres in Madison WV. about fifteen years ago, and build a little 40x40 cabin with the old growth logs off the land. the land was fifteen hundred, and the cost in building was about ten grand total. now that I'm in my sixties, was looking too do the bucket list and grow old and kick back and die happy. but there just an't any place in the mountains that are available with in my income. but if you hear of any land, even a few odd acres, but ten would be great. for around that price line. I hate the idea, of having too move to Texas, where there are lots of land for 20 bucks an acre. and 110 in the shade sweat box's. not my thing, if you get my drift. I almost had a place with 25 acres for nineteen grand once ,but doing an inquiry I found that the land was never owned by the seller, and that the sheriff department would force any one off the land as it was state land, taken as part of the emit domain scam, by the local county officials. they did the same thing in WV, back around the time I had finished my cabin. just never deal with blue grass land, their crooks.so never buy unless there are land, mineral, and royalty rights to the land. other wise these scumbags can claim your land. hell there is always someone trying too get over. so watch your back, there is always someone that will try too take what you got.

    • @50Acres
      @50Acres  6 лет назад

      Ralph, you should check out land on both sides of the Ohio river in KY, OH and WV. There was 12 acres down the street from me, with a little pond and road frontage for $22K a couple years ago. Keep your eyes open and you will come across something.

    • @ralphtaylor3796
      @ralphtaylor3796 6 лет назад

      sounds good, worth looking at. but WV, never again. been there done that one before. they do not honor their deeds, then harass you until you sell out to them, as most of blue ridge land is there their thieves in my book. and the county clerks work with them ,sell ya land then bust your ass with building fees and permits, or fines. went there lost everything, I put into that land, only to have the state step in and claim it as public lands. that's why I'm looking for all rights to the land.other wise the state can reclaim it under their ED scam, only to sell it too some other jackass, who will pay them more. the last time I dealt with Madison WV. there was no building restrictions at the sale ,then three months later they came in with building code violations, then no permit fines, illegal development of the land, the list goes on and on. the money lost was not worth the crap they dealt out. but I did sue them and lost, hell they ruled before the court was convened. hell the judges words were clear, at the hearing, just before he opened the hearing. his words ring clear, you have the right too appeal after I make my ruling. twenty minutes later I was out of court ruling against me, the judge favored the blue ridge land development company. I found out later that they had been doing that for years to other people. I found nine people that got screwed over, with their scam. I even went too the state AG, he told me that I had no legal rights to state owned land. even if I had a quick claim deed. even with the county clerk, seal on it. as it was no owned by the country. but there was nothing that could be done, other then sue them individually, which I did, and still lost out. it took me three years of BS crap, more then fifty grand in costs to fight these scabs. the word it too say, full lease of deed, not deed of land, or any rights to or for said property. I don't know what your deed says but I'd check it out fast. and have every thing in writing ,with state notary seal on every document, or said right to land. even the building zone codes. my friend bought a ready built cabin, and set foundation and delivery date, paid for every thing, the day after they delivered the house, the country inspector showed up, claiming that the house was not allowed ,he had ten days to remove it or be finds three hundred a day. he was still fined fifteen hundred for not have the proper permits, and allowances by state land manager. if you ask that BLM. they took the land twenty years earlier from a hillbilly family that lived there over a hundred years, with the BLM emit domain ruling. as the stated owner had died, and his family had lost their claim too the land. I had another friend in Ohio that went through the same shit, the city sold him the property only to claim it back four years later due to ED claim from state BLM. they sold that land and house for ten times what Clive bought it for and had in it. only to do it all over the state to others. it is a democratic scammers that runs these thieves. they got their little mob running most if not all the states land offices. hell they got their own police officers even. hell their all over the place. they step in every time to claim land that the state sold to others under their ED scam.anyway thanks for the 411 on that land, I'll check out the area.

    Those gussets will fail in a fire. People don’t realize if your home is engineered framing the fire department will not make entry to save your life! Also ballon framing was stopped because of fire spread issues. The fire travels freely along the entire length of the studs through all levels and enters the attic. I hope you added fire stops in your walls or a small fire will take your entire house. I too live in an unincorporated township where we have no bylaws or building inspector but no one would dare build a ballon frame due to the dangers of it.
