    One of the best films ever made. Cast and production are perfect. Somerset's story was also a perfect fit. And a true story on top of that.

    This is the movie I saw in Shanghai in 1940s. I was too young to understand and my mother had to explain to me, even then I could not understand it. Those were the days after WWII and the world was in a joyous mood. Unfortunately, the civil war came to China and dreams and hopes were shattered forever. When I saw the movie this morning all the nostalgia came back. For a journey in the memory lane, it is a bitter sweet experience.

    Quite a film. A long term reader of Somerset Maughn, I find the film gets his aloof humanity just right. It's the writer's detachment, but also the eye of a man who thinks humans are, in an emotional sense, fascinating. It's a literary film, and the Indian bit, though without audio, is perhaps more eloquent in silence.

    • @deirdre108
      @deirdre108 2 месяца назад

      I'm also fond of Maugham's writing and his somewhat cynical view of humanity. The actor who played him here was quite good, very much like I'd imagine the author to be. Maugham originally had studied medicine so I think his "writer's detachment" and fascination with human foibles might be partially the result of his education (as well as his natural inclination). This quality comes out much stronger in the novel than in the film, doesn't it?

    Actually, there is only One path to God and Salvation, and that is only through the Mediator Jesus Christ. I spent most of my youth searching like the main character in this movie, looking for answers to why am I here, what's my purpose, what is this world about. The answers only began to come when I turned to our Heavenly Father and His Son, and studied His Word, The Bible. I had read Greek philosophy, the Upanishads, and eastern religious philosophy. None of that gave the proper answers, but only more hints.

    Decent movie but in Larry’s ultimate quest for the meaning of life he seeks out French philosophy and Indian mystics, there is no mention of the Bible or of Jesus. “All who live truth listen to me.” Faith is an incredible mystery but revelation can come in a second.

      The English language didn't exist for hundred hundreds of years...later.
      Languages were "rough translations", at
      best.
      Comments that were supposedly uttered
      2,000+ years ago are guesses and
      surmises.

      I thought the Indian guru mentioned God in a way that an Indian guru might not in reality. I thought his mentioning God in the way he did was a Christian influence the movie was conveying...for the era in which it was made.

      God is the creator of all religion (tower of babble-Genesis ) ,and creator of mankind. All religions have the same context, one God, one spiritual savior and be loving to one another, it's mankind who got that wrong. The part in the movie where he is working the mine and he talks to the defrocked priest - well that is catholic who are believers of bible/Jesus, and it is he who sent him to India... ... The India teacher talks of God, do they actually have to use the word "Bible", or Jesus" by name? No, because all of Larry's research, learning all led him to the most important pivotal point of his life, in that little mountain shack where he accepted God into his heart... Became complete and was put on his life's purpose to help others..
      Sometimes you win ppl by how you present yourself and if you follow the teaching is how.
