Fun fact about the tavern, there was a kickstarter reward that amounted to someone who paid a lot of money getting to be involved in the game design in a minor way, like naming the tavern, writing lines for the innkeeper or something similar. But Obsidian could never contact the person, and after repeated attempts at contacting said backer, they decided to respin the story of the tavern with the "owner left" thread.

Ah this game is definitely gonna be a classic, it's one of the best new age RPGs made. A bit complex and hard to understand at first, especially with the 4 different types of defense + armor but once you get it, the game is really awesome.
Deflection - Lowers the chance to be hit by weapon type attacks for the most part, even spells that are more physical-like or weapon-like.
Reflex - Lowers the chance to be hit by area of effect attacks/spells.
Fortitude - Lowers the chance to be hit by spells/attacks that disable or stun or target your constitution overall. Things like disease/sickness type spells as well.
Will - Lowers the chance to be hit/affected by mind control spells/attacks or things that lower your resolve, anything fear related basically.
Armor - Hard armor reduces the amount of damage you take instead of giving a chance to dodge like the above four stats.
Depending on random chance and the first four defenses, all attacks can be one of the following - Critical hit, Normal hit, Graze or Miss.
Crits deal bonus damage, normal deals normal obviously, graze deals half and miss deals no damage. So against enemies with high deflection you may not deal full damage with most your attacks, but by using a spell or attack that targets a different defense instead of deflection you would be able to get full damage. The key to combat is basically figuring out what defense to target against what enemy.

Okay, Jon, some small tips in case you would want to run this game: (spoiler free, of course)
    - endurance is HP in this game, it regenerates after fights - to some extent
    - if you run out of endurance, you fall unconscious and will get back on your feet after the fight is over but will get a wound (not the same as for monks), like the rogue had in the beginning (minus for abilities and so on) which will only go away after rest
    - the game is kind of dnd-like, so you have Vancian magic (memorization, single use per rest and so on) and similar abilities like in your regular dnd games
    - might is tricky: it means physical and spiritual strength as well, so your wizard should have pretty high might as it will increase spell damage
    - use personal inventory only for temporary stuff, put everything else in your stash as it is always accessible
    - some stuff goes directly to your stash (like gems and other tradeable valuables)
    - your stash has limits too, so sell the junk regularly
    - don't forget to put potions and other items to your quick access items in your inventory, so that you can access them during fights
    - in the choose-your-own-adventure like dialogue box events you can use one-use only items: hammer and chisel to tear down walls, prybars to open stuff, grapple and rope to climb, and some fire making tools to... well making fire (you don't necessarily need these if you have the abilities or skills or whatnot to replace them)
    - this is an obisidian game so expect to have multiple solutions to the same problem
    - enemy encounters only yield xp until you reach a limit (shown after each fight), when you reach this limit / enemy type, you no longer gain xp to fight that type of enemy, as you have already learned all that the enemy can show in combat (this is to discourage grinding)
    - don't be a jack of all trades when it comes to skills. And have someone specialize in Mechanics (maybe Aloth, lore is mostly useful to the main character only) so that you can disarm traps
    - talk regularly to your companions (click on their face and then click the talk bubble icon)
    - Waidwen's legacy is the main thing in the game: it is a curse or illness or something like that which causes children to be born without a soul (hollowborn). they vegetate but are not truly alive. this is important for story reasons

It would be an awful lot of just reading out stuff. Good or not, these kind of games, especially writing crazy ones like poe, make poor series unless edited a LOT. Like Jon does here. Cut out the dialogues and give a summary of what happened (not complaining, it's necessary) or not read them at all (bear cave) .
Means you have to play a long time, for the short final video. And a lot of editing work. For probably not very many views.

      @rrai1999 3 года назад +1

I found them both compelling, the Dyrwood for everything but the physical setting, because a feudal colonial-era fantasy America is a pretty unique and neat concept, but the environment was boring. The Deadfire looks way more attractive and is still neat as it's an analogue of the Carribean. I don't know if most people noticed but all of the nations and areas are rough analogues of empires and nations from the 16th to 19th century.

Jon always overplays these combat systems. The big advantage of pausable real time fights is that you don't have to micromanage against ordinary enemies. The build-in scripts can do just fine against the odd wolf. But you can against harder ones. Wereas turn based makes even simple fights last for half an hour.

The trying to loot expencives off Calisha and Heodan. So painful to watch. You figuring out the stash moments later, so gratifying to watch. :)

How does xp work in the first pillars of eternity? I picked a lock and the combat log said I got 10xp. But when I check character sheet it says I only have 6/1000 experience. I have one person in my party by the way, calisca. Please help.

Awesome, was thinking just the other day that it was odd that Jon never featured PoE on the channel. Here's hoping for more adventures of Captain Punchy and His Wizard Friend! If you do play more Jon, just be sure to read up about the different PoE gods, particularly Eothas, Magran and Woedica, who tie in heavily with the story. The PoE pantheon is one of the best in fantasy fiction. Incidentally, Ondra is your "God", being a Moon Godlike.

Jon finally trying Pillars, what a lovely surprise! Would watch the hell out of the livestream or a proper series, this is one of my favourite games of all time, and PoEII, dare I say, is even better. My only advice is to restart on a harder difficulty (but maybe not Path of the Damned just yet): while the combat system is rather complex, the normal level just doesn't seem to provide any challenge to someone who already knows a thing or two about RPGs such as yourself.

Really love this game. Choices have proper consequences later in the game. Just FYI the pillars that you lit in the side chamber would have deactivated the trap floor if you hadn't already done it manually. The game is good in that it gives you lots of different ways to solve problems depending on what character you play

This is an awesome game. If you like this, you should check out pathfinder: kingmaker. It just launched on aug 18th on consoles, this/that/divinity original sin are the best things to happen to gaming in forever. So glad these infinity engine style games are coming back. This was the golden age.

How does xp work? I’m at the very beginning and started with 0 xp. I picked a lock and my combat log says I received 10 xp, but when I check my character sheet it says I only have 6/1000 experience. Why is this?

Paused the video 40 mins in so not sure if you have already figured this out - when you are looting you can put things in your backpack by clicking on the chest button. You could have carried all that stuff you left behind on your companions' dead bodies. Good luck with this game Jon, I hope you carry on.

Started this game a little while ago, then they announced Avowed, then almost every youtuber does a playthrough, and now jon is talking about a livestream (read as a Vince McMahon meme). I'm not a fan of the real time with pause games, and I still don't get all of the mechanics, but it's just written so damn well that I spend all of my quarantine time on this game.

So glad to see you play PoE, one of my favourite games ever. It would make a great series. I'm not sure how it would be live as there are mixed instances through it that are almost impossible to pass until you are levelled and equipped. BTW, well done on the bear, that's usually quite difficult with a single character. PoE2 would also really suit your style..it's a less intense game with much more humour.

I loved Pillars of Eternity 1. Such a rich story and world. Great writing and characters too, particularly the companions. In my opinion Pillars of Eternity 2 is even better, takes all the great things about the first game and then improves the gameplay mechanics and the class system. Plus it continues the story from the first game and you can import all your choices from the first game!

You're gonna need some weapons that do slashing/piercing damage since your fists only do bludgeoning damage. Damage resistance is extremely important in this game.
