Dr. Sugrue, for about 10 years I have been teaching myself literature and philosophy through primary texts and online lectures / podcasts, and your series is by far the best I've come across. Thanks so much.

Getting my masters in legal history at the moment and I was just yesterday wishing for another video from Dr. Sugrue on Aquinas! You have a world of students touched by your knowledge. Thanks for everything, professor.
I’ve listened and followed you since 2006. I’m deeply indebted to your massive knowledge and magisterial education. God bless you and thank you so much, Professor.
EVERY time I re-watch these videos, I'm enlightened more than the previous times! Sugrue is a remarkable communicator that neither dumbs down nor becomes haughty. A truly phenomenal mind.
I grew up watching your lectures, Professor. Your teachings have greatly enriched my life, and have made me a better man. Some of the only videos on the internet I am excited to see. Thank you.
I've watched all his videos. This man is the most pleasant person to listen to and the way he tells a story about our ancient masters is just magical. I would love for him to do a complete overview of all philosophers or even write his own history of philosophy. I would even donate to help to start a project like that.
Many thanks and love from Germany. Your lecture on Marcus Aurelius changed my life. I love Aquinas and can't wait to watch this! You're a great man, may God bless you and your loved ones.
Thank you Dr. Sugrue! I recommend to anyone interested in Saint Thomas Aquinas to find an SSPX chapel near you. The priests of the Society of St. Pius X are given the greatest formation you can find nowadays that is almost entirely rooted in Thomistic thought. If you are interested in experiencing the Mass that Saint Thomas celebrated every day of his priesthood, the Society offers the traditional Latin Mass which is identical to the Mass said by every priest since the time of St. Gregory the Great. God bless!
Dr. Sugrue offers the key to open our minds to the plethora of ideas written by brilliant thinkers over thousands of years. In a sense it is the evolution of morality and hopefully sheds light on understanding our own life experiences.
In all these lectures, from the 90's to today, I have finally figured out one of the reasons that makes Sugrue so brilliant. He distills, brilliantly, the real meaning of what we have read or are reading.
As far as I'm concerned, you have attained Thomas Sowell status in that you must be protected and are not allowed to die. Thank you for all of your amazing work.
Dear Dr Sugrue, thank you so very much for your wonderful lectures. I’m a loyal follower and will remain such, but methinks you should let the dog in. Its sorrowful crying would break any heart, no matter how analytical or philosophic. Many thanks Dr Sugrue for everything!
Deep gratitude for your commitment to teaching about the Western intellectual tradition. Very admirable your helping others. Wish that you could find a spot on the AM radio dial instead of the barking ideologues that now inhabit that media space.
Thanks for your insights on Aquinas. The perfect universal hierarchy and his schedules of virtue. His breadth of knowledge is remarkable. Please consider cleaning the lens on your video camera.
Thank you so much! I havve purchased the Suma Theologica but have not yet had time to read it. Your lecture will make it much easier for me to understand as I'm retiring soon and will have time to read it. I have thoroughly enjoyed all of your lectures on philosophy, but won't read most of the works. But Aquinas has always intrigued me and I suspect that reading his work will be a great adventure and very enlightening.
Thanks for your memory, intellect and knowledge that you spread freely. I'm not a philosophy student and I enjoy learning from you while I don't have to. Recently I felt the urge to review your video's on Plato's Republic and I've gone insane. I can't stop comparing the Islamic Republic of Iran with Platonic Republic. I think what Plato was seeking as you said by connecting the moral and political law can go terribly wrong. What an unjust man can do by misusing his idea is horrifying. And your recent video's are relatable to the current situation of my country, Iran. My people are fighting a just war against the brutal philosophical dogs educated by the unjust philosopher king of this regime and the war is going on. The evil philosopher king that has legalized the breaking natural moral law in the country recently. It means allowing his philosophical dogs to kill the Innocent young people mostly women. it's always a relieve listening to your wise speech and this time made me wish for having an actual international criminal court to put these tyrants on trial.
14:39 You speak of Aquinas’s beatific vision of ascension to heaven, and your dog howls with agreement! Hallelujah! How perfect! But i think that dog has some separation anxiety 😟 I am hoping someday soon you will connect Aquinas et Al to the current philosophical meltdown of the USA and others in light of the recent popularity of Authoritarianism and the ostensible failures of democratic institutions.
29:00 "The Romans were a predatory, military empire." Agreed! Seems that the USA inherited their DNA. We have enjoyed global hegemony since 1945. Seems we've been "in the war business" since then. Would you agree?
"Guide to the Perplexed " by Rabbi Moses Maimonides (mentioned by Professor Sugrue) is a book filled with wisdom written by a very wise theologian, philosopher and all-around scholar. What I really need, though, is for someone to write a book titled, "Guide for the Perpetually Perplexed" - the type of book that provides answers to important but overlooked questions such as, "Should a jar of ketchup be refrigerated during very hot weather?"
Dr. Sugrue, I know you’ve talked at length about various theological and philosophical concepts within the Church, but have you ever considered covering the works of Cardinal Ratzinger/Pope Benedict XVI (primarily his Introduction to Christianity and other works he published prior to and after becoming Pope). It would be very interesting to hear your takes on his thought.

Hi professor, I discovered your channel when I came across your Marcus Aurelius video, and I got so interested that I binge watched your other videos as well. I can say that I am learning a lot of new and very interesting things and I am grateful to you for sharing your profound knowledge through these very insightful videos. PS. The Marcus Aurelius video got me interested in Philosophy and I hope you could make more videos about him, and if possible about Jung, Freud, Kant, and Machiavelli as well.

Hi Dr. Sugrue. I hope you - and Queenie - made it through Ian without too much disruption to your lives. Thank you for these lectures!
How does he speak with such depth and articulation, while a puppy is whining in the background? That's mastery of the material!

I like the way you present complex ideas. There’s more than a bit of genius here for synthesis and teaching.
It’s a cultural desert out there, and Sugrue is where I visit to quench my thirst for decency, ethics, culture and humanity.

Read the book by Al-Farabi "On the Perfect State", which is a synthesis of Islam and Plato's Republic. It will give you much to think about.
