I had no idea the ideas put forth by Descartes (can trust only your mind, not your senses) and Hume (no such thing as a cause) had me me questioning my own sanity all this time, ever since they introduced those ideas to us in high school. Praise God for restoring to me the ability to consciously trust in my senses.
I luckily believed that our highschool teacher was joking. She explained everything so theatrically, and we have a national philosopher who is also quite overhyped and theatrical who had written our textbook. So all that I got from 120 hours of philosophy was that one should know how to take a theatrical pose where he doubts everything.
Frigging Mind Blowing Sermon... St Thomas Aquinas is OFF THE CHARTS!!!! WOW!! thank you for this.....awesome, awesome, awesome. The one true church!!! ❤❤❤✝️🙏💪
What a great and inspiring sermon is! Thank you Father for sharing this powerful sermon with us and may God be praised and glorified through it. St. Thomas Aquinas, pray for us. Amen!
A wonderful introduction to Aquinas, and the modern dilemma of philosophy and church. From these spoken words I infer that our speaker, who carries with him the tenacity of youth, shall go on to discourse on divers and complex things in years to come. And for those speeches, when they're ready for recitation, shall be met a throng of eager disciples. Thank you for the talk, friend!
According to the records of his canonization, Thomas fell at once into a mystical sleep and had a vision. Two angels came to him from heaven and bound a cord around his waist, saying, “On God’s behalf, we gird you with the girdle of chastity, a girdle which no attack will ever destroy.” In the records of his canonization, many different witnesses who knew St. Thomas at different points in his life remarked about his evidently high degree of purity and chastity. The angels’ gift preserved St. Thomas from sexual temptation and bestowed upon him an enduring purity that ennobled all his thoughts and actions. Pope Pius XI wrote: “If St. Thomas had not been victorious when his chastity was in peril, it is very probable that the Church would never have had her Angelic Doctor.”
I have been a reader of philosophy on my own for several years now and have been known to profess an affinity for Immanuel Kant. However, after hearing this lecture, I surely must read Thomas Aquinas!

May St Thomas continue to protect Christ's church from the errors and heresies spouted by these proponents of so called "nouvelle theologie". Why fix what ain't broke?
Very well presented. Although Machiavelli is the founder of modern philosophy and not Descartes. This does not change the anti-Thomistic animus. Also Husserlian phenomenology is a way to reconnect from within our modern experience with both Aristotle and Thomas philosophically. Philosophy has no past but our own experiences are very much historically conditioned. This is why for many Thomism feels, but is not, alien. It is also not likely, although this cannot be proven, that things would be any different today if Vatican II had never happened. Polemics within the faith are rarely helpful. It is important to also keep in mind that the Church has never had an official philosophy or theology and obviously never could. Thomism is presented as the best model of Theology. What I love most about St. Thomas is his being THE antidote against both Pride and Lust which both cause and perpetuate modernity. Thanks!!!!!
What this apostasy led to was men thinking they can be women and women thinking they can be men. Anything can be anything so there is nothing so now we are Gods. Back to the first sin in the garden.

Wow! Is there a Thomas Aquinas study for dummies? I'm not sure I'd even comprehend that lol. Also, had no clue about the "Theology of the Body" talk by Matthew West to be so backwards. Did he misinterpret St. John Paul II's writings? Thanks.
Maybe also pick a book of the Summa to read. It is dense, but simple and straightforward--very clear. I read Aquinas treatise on law in middle school. The whole Summa Theologica is overwhelming, but the individual sections are quite readable.
RachelPops I’m wondering the same thing about that “certain lay person”. Is it just his tour and talks, or TOB altogether that are supposedly anti-Thomist?
Excellent talk. The great French philosopher (one can also call him a theologian) Etienne Gilson (1884-1978) had, I believe the correct interpretation of St Thomas in saying that all of the Summa Theologiae and even of the Summa Contra Gentiles is theology, and that what looks like philosophy is actually a philosophy that has been enlightened, transformed, elevated, and subsumed into theology, as at Cana water was turned to wine, as St Thomas says. See amazon.com/Reason-Thomas-Aquinas-According-Etienne-ebook/dp/B07FN96THS/ref=sr_1_2
Certainly much food for thought. But I reckon the book of Genesis is not to be taken entirely literally. Especially as regards dates. For to assume it is totally literal undermines so much else.
God commanded Adam and Eve to be fruitful and multiply. Thus the conjugal act in marriage is good in that it is obedience to God. Also, to say something is not good in the act, only the effect sounds illogical. The act and effects are both good. If the act is not done the effect would be gone and we would be extinct.
You are confused between good versus meritorious. It is good to eat so that I will not starve, but it is not meritorious in the same sense as prayer. I do not become more spiritual by eating. Neither by having more sex. The second issue was that in sharing God's creative power, the conception is what makes it so, not the conjugal act per se.
Just on his point about evolution, it is not correct to conclude from the example that the priest gives that Thomas refutes evolution; as evolution can only occur after life exists. He might have said abiogenesis, and not evolution.
This was okay but it seemed a little confused when it gave the Hegel reference since Hegel is very much a return, Hegel does not think it's all in the mind, and is very much the completion of the meaning of the church fathers.
Modernism is the idea that there is no truth, but instead it is the current moment in time that determines what is true. Or, in other words, it says that truth is change and change is the only truth. Once you put truth above change, like any Christian, any person who knows his Bible should, your wordplay collapses and you could as well have said nothing.
if St Thomas says Genesis is to be taken literally. Then the earth must be flat and stationary. Becauae the sun was created after the earth , thus the earth was not rotating around anything for that time.
I had no idea the ideas put forth by Descartes (can trust only your mind, not your senses) and Hume (no such thing as a cause) had me me questioning my own sanity all this time, ever since they introduced those ideas to us in high school. This was very good! (minus the weird segue into marital things; how would/does the Church have made it a sacrament if it wasn't "sacra"?)
St. Thomas did teach that the organic could come from the inorganic though.
