I don't think it's rude at all. There's no reason proper spelling and grammar can't be used all the time, English paper or not. We all should strive to be better in this regard. Rather than flame some one for correcting me, I'd thank them and try to remember the lesson in the future. Also, it's kinda sad if something this trivial ruined your day.
Criticism isn't a negative thing unless you let it be. If you choose to let this be an educational moment instead of taking it as an attack on your character, your feelings won't be hurt.
