Loved getting to know you , your boat and of course Buttercup. I admire your lifestyle and commitment to the environment etc. Looking forward to watching you explore and sail around this summer . Where is the best place to buy a boat on the west coast?
Hi Mary! Thank you! I bought my boat through a broker in Vancouver. The only reason I did this is that at the time they had the only Catalina 28 available in Canada! I do know, however, that many people find their boats on Craigslist or Facebook Marketplace. There are numerous listings on there. Just be sure to get it surveyed before buying!!
Hi Amanda. I recently found your videos. I am from North Vancouver. I am currently living in the Uk. I also lived off grid for many years when doing some mining exploration, approx 10 months a year. My life took a very different path and I ended up in the UK in 1998. I will look forward to catching up on all your videos.

On my catalina, all lines lead aft so i can manage everything from the cockpit. the only exception is dropping the sail, which isn't so horrible as i have a dutchman's flaking system... helps a bit dropping the main alone. new vid coming in a few weeks... i am excited to get started again.

hi there! i am sorry you couldn't come back this way. i think many people feel the way you do. there was definitely a lot less people around on the water last summer.
Yeah, I looked into it from so many angles, but the border is most decidedly shut. We were overrun here in the San Juan Islands. Thankfully I found a couple of anchorages (not really anchorages) where nobody else was silly enough to anchor and had tons of peace and quiet. I was anchored next door (to the west of you) in the Bristol 33 and was always amazed at seeing that Buttercup fit into your dinghy! That was the best year of cruising I’ve done. I had a lot of friends come exploring & spent a lot of time in the Gulf Islands and on some of the smaller islands in the Straight of Georgia. Didn’t want to come back.

Thats very good to hear it works well. I know its a lot of work keeping it fed. I heated my home on the west coast of the island for 8 years with wood. Really miss having a simple good lifestyle. In June it is time to park my fuel tanker truck and find a good life balance. Lots to do this year. Change all my thru hulls and inspect my rudder frame and post. Get sophia ready for a new life of cruising and living 😊
I enjoyed your video. I'm curious about where, how and what you find to fuel your stove. After 25 years aboard 5 vessels on our sw BC coast with a woodstove and unsure access to shore power, keeping warm has been the main challenge.
Just found your channel, great Q&A and stories, Buttercup sounds like a master protector :) I've never been sailing before, if I wanted to try and learn more about it do you know where to start? I live in the Vancouver area. Look forward to seeing more videos on your channel.
yah butter is pretty great. i’d recommend joining the jericho sailing club. maybe take a few lessons there. last i remember they have 2 sailboats there for members to use and well as a bunch of lasers…
Thanks for sharing your experience , amazing video presentation very engaging. I’m Very new to sailing…actually not even done once but would love to know how to get started? Subscribed and loved and liked your video.
Hi Manish! Thank you so much. I would join your local sailing club and get started on those tiny little boats. That's how I started. I took my White Sails I, II & III at the local sailing and yacht club :). I also did a lot of 'crewing'. At the yacht club in Vancouver they have a 'crew' circle where you can stand on race days and the racers will grab you to be 'dead weight' :). That was fun :).
I like the question about "loneliness and boredom" . . . lol . . . I'm a loner, have been all my life, but I don't feel "lonely" at all . . . in fact, if I were to stand in the middle of a huge crowd, _that_ is when I feel the most lonely . . . also - I had a friend who would tell his kids when they complained that they were bored - _"Maybe you're bored because you're boring?"_ . . . btw, I'm off to take a look at a boat for my future retirement/off the grid home in the Inside Passage - a 40' schooner down in Saturna Island. Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
hahaha! my mom always used to tell me the exact same thing! the term loner doesn't do introverts justice i think :). most introverts i have met are the MOST interesting people. thank you for subscribing and i hope you keep me posted about your Inside Passage home :)
@@AmandaOffGrid Hey-hey . . . just got back from taking a look at that schooner anchored at Saturna Island . . . it's a big fixup job, that's for sure - but the layout of the boat is just right. I have a lot of thinking and phoning around to do for the next few days. I'll try to keep you posted - thanks for the response to my comment.
hi there, yes back when I made this video StarLink didn't have the RV version. some friends of mine who were going to live on their boat got one and it worked great!
Hello, came across your video, enjoyed it alot. I am wondering what you do about all the boat repairs and maintenance, do you do all your maintenance, did you install your fireplace, etc, or do you hire people for alll the jobs required to keep a boat. I love what your doing and your way of living.
Hi Floyd. I do all my own annual engine maintenance, minor fiberglass repairs and I scrub, sand and paint the bottom myself. If there is anything major (like pulling my alternator to have it tested) I either hire someone or if I am lucky enough to have a friend lend a hand we'll do it together (mostly him doing and me watching and learning!). A friend of mine helped me install the fireplace - we did it together :). I installed my solar system myself. I'll be totally honest my boat hasn't required a whole lot of work as i bought it in incredible condition and I've been super lucky with it.
ok...I'm along for the marathon. Sub. I saw another video of yours which brought me here. Did Buttercup pass away? I thought I saw him/her in a newer vid.
Hello Amanda, just found your link looking for information on sailing in BC on LinkedIn, of all places . I am thinking of getting into a similar lifestyle than yours in the future. Now I have to watch all your episodes ...........
Amanda I adore your content. I'm gearing up to buy a trojan 36 in comox and am having a rough time finding boat insurance because it's an old 1973. I'd like to winter at the slip it's in but without insurance I get the boot. Any advice most welcome. Thanks.
Oh yah... that's tough. Those new insurance rules came in a few years ago I think. What is it now? Boats over 30 years old aren't getting insured? Some friends of mine had the same issue. They went through an insurance broker, got insurance, but ended up paying quite a bit. In Vancouver many boats were abandoned in English Bay, False Creek because they couldn't get insurance. The first year that rule came in there were boat losing anchor and causing lots of havoc. It was brutal. The only advice I can give you is try an insurance broker OR take the money you'd spend on insurance and drop a mooring can in a quiet area - Gorge Harbour is a good place :).
Hello, I am wondering, when you lived on the boat with Buttercup, was that actually year round, and if so, for how many years, and where did you stop....was it in paid moorage or just just wherever?
Hi! Buttercup and i moved onto the boat in June 2013. For the first couple of years i was at dock full time (not an official liveaboard spot). After that we started leaving for the entire summer (leasing out my spot) and then coming back for winter. Eventually we moved to anchoring fulltime. when COVID arrived we headed north and eventually ended up where i am now :).
official meaning not designated a liveaboard spot. in Vancouver there's a 19 year wait list for liveaboard spots. i've been on the list since 2012 still not even close to the top of the list. official liveaboard spots have dedicated sewage lines.
Hi Sandra! Thank you :). My boat's name is 'Ananda'. I was reading a book at the time I bought the boat that had a character named Ananda (it means 'extreme happiness', 'joy' or 'bliss' in Sanskrit) and I thought that it was the perfect name!
Hi Enid, when we lived on our boat full time I would take Buttercup with me pretty much everywhere. The only time I couldn't is when I had to resupply. She would stay alone on the boat for those occasions. If the anchorage was rough or I didn't feel the boat was 100% secure I wouldn't leave it (or her alone!).
@@AmandaOffGrid Kinda both to be honest. i`ve been stuck landlocked for two decades. i`m pretty much fed up with it. I want to find some way to obtain a sailboat large enough for my needs that wont break the bank.
Love your channel and lifestyle. Thu ought the coast of BC and the panhandle of Alaska, if you remain in salt water and not near any cities or towns, are there any limits as to how long you can anchor in one spot?
As I found out last winter in Campbell River there are actually limits, but it's unlikely the Provincial government will ask you to move UNLESS you are trespassing on First Nations land OR they get a ton of complaints from residents with properties on the shoreline (it would need to be a few years of complaints for the latter). With the winds etc. that you find along the Georgia Strait you generally keep moving around to avoid them :).

fantastic!! i have the cubic mini cub… it kept me so warm the last 3 winters on the boat. best thing i ever got for my boat 😊🔥
I repowerd at ocean pacific 2 summers ago. I probably will sail up to CR to do my haulout and survey this summer. SV Sophia. 😊😁

Your quirky, smart, adventurous, pretty and an introvert .....:) I will watch that.
thank you 😊😊!!
@@cseguin fabulous!!!!
love the vid Amanda
you could look at an rv starlink they will work on a boat , im getting one for mine
hi there, yes back when I made this video StarLink didn't have the RV version. some friends of mine who were going to live on their boat got one and it worked great!
Hello Amanda,
just found your link looking for information on sailing in BC on LinkedIn, of all places .
I am thinking of getting into a similar lifestyle than yours in the future.
Now I have to watch all your episodes ...........
❤️
👍
Hi Amanda ☺️
Sure is another life vs. 1999 :)
it certainly is :)!!
@@AmandaOffGrid thank you.
@@AmandaOffGrid Thank You, I'm not sure ehat official spot is. Please keep posting from your current location, always a great watch.
official meaning not designated a liveaboard spot. in Vancouver there's a 19 year wait list for liveaboard spots. i've been on the list since 2012 still not even close to the top of the list. official liveaboard spots have dedicated sewage lines.
How about getting Starlink internet in your boat? That would make it easier
wow, would it ever! starlink technology doesn't quite work on boats yet. apparently the motion of the ocean turns it off.
👍😃✌️
👍🏻🙏🏻
First!!!!
ha ha!!
What is your boats name! Well done introduction!
Hi Sandra! Thank you :). My boat's name is 'Ananda'. I was reading a book at the time I bought the boat that had a character named Ananda (it means 'extreme happiness', 'joy' or 'bliss' in Sanskrit) and I thought that it was the perfect name!
@@AmandaOffGrid cool bet ya that gets confusing Anada and Amanda lol.

@@sandrarenwick1225 ha ha! you called it! i have had many people call me Ananda and i just don't have the heart to correct them... i don't mind :)!
Do you leave the dog alone when you have to go out?
Hi Enid, when we lived on our boat full time I would take Buttercup with me pretty much everywhere. The only time I couldn't is when I had to resupply. She would stay alone on the boat for those occasions. If the anchorage was rough or I didn't feel the boat was 100% secure I wouldn't leave it (or her alone!).
i am hoping to try this type of thing at some stage. i dunno how viable it is for me.
Hi! Off-Grid life or boat life?
@@AmandaOffGrid Kinda both to be honest. i`ve been stuck landlocked for two decades. i`m pretty much fed up with it. I want to find some way to obtain a sailboat large enough for my needs that wont break the bank.
do you see any people sailing catamarans there?
In BC? for sure... not so much right now as it’s off-season 😊
