    I've gotten lucky with getting a free plant at a Lowes once! It was right after Easter, and there was a worker that was loading up carts of Easter Lillies to take over to the dumpster. They were telling everyone as they walked by to take one because they were getting tossed otherwise.

    I love how responsible you are about telling this story, because I'm sure the manager or the worker would've gotten in huge trouble for what they did if you had disclosed their details - which would be an absolute shame considering how morally/humanely he made the right choice. =)

    I also had a right place at the right time at my Lowe's. I was going to the plant section to look around and a gentleman was watering plants and said that everything on this rack is discounted he said I'll give it to you for $0.25. I ended up getting eight plants with pots and for empty for a total of $7. Some pots I paid $1 for. I was very happy!

      I tend to go to grocery outlet close by my house, and I think I started a trend where the manager brought down prices for the rescue plants (1.98) for 6 inch plants; cause I always ask her if her shitty inventory could be marked down and I'll take them, the pots are worth 1.98 already, so the plant is essentially free. She have a clearance section now for the dying ones lol, and to me it's like just paying for a cute pot anyway and it gives me a reason to play with plants and rescue them

I also still get broken leaves and stems off the ground. I will do a video live next time I go there. I was passing by my lowes and on that day the nursery manager was on duty. He told me that all clearance plants were 80% off. I purchased 10 plants. Took them home, clean them up and they are currently growing. Photos, begonias, caletias. 😊😊😊 was very happy to have them. Went back the following day and the manager was not around at all. He is the only one that can give those types of discounts. I am hoping that if they throw them away, they can give it to the public to try to resuscitate. 😊

    I went to Aldi to get groceries and a couple of hanging baskets for our back porch. The hanging baskets were picked over and were very sparse as far as foliage. I got two of the better ones and took them to the manned checkout. The cashier said he’d give them to me half price and told me they’d probably throw the rest of them out at the end of the day. They’re doing great and flowering.

    My local Walmart basically froze a recent shipment so bad that every plant had horrible cold damage and most didn’t make it, but they marked a lot of them down to $1. I still didn’t want to take any of them on, but yeah I agree, sometimes special circumstances at certain stores can be a winning combo if you’re looking for super bargains on plants!

    I also have a calathea medallion rescue from a big box store… brought it home at the very beginning of my plant journey without realizing it was totally covered in spider mites! I did manage to get rid of them, but even now ~7 months later, it still looks pretty scraggly.
    One thing I’ve noticed is it has a lot of leaf turnover-it must’ve grown about a leaf a month since I brought it home, though I haven’t been keeping track. Only problem is, I can’t manage to get it to hold onto older leaves while growing new ones!

    I wanted to comment on your Calethea Medallion! That was one of the first plants I brought home to my mother when I was a little kid! So we lived across the street from a flower shop named Butler Twins (I don't believe it's there anymore.)and they would take all of their dead plants and scraps after they were done making their Arrangements out back to there very large compost pile and I would always sneak out behind and find my mom some pretty wilted beat up plants out there for her to put out on our sun porch where me and her would give them a new life and they would grow so big and beautiful, they would always come back really nicely! So this particular plant in your video that you call "Calethea Medallion" has another name I grew up calling it the "Prayer Plant"! Now whether that's just another common name for it or it's just a nickname passed down through the years I don't know but we always called it the "Prayer Plant" because at night time the leaves would always bend upwards and fold together as if though it was praying and in the morning they would fall back down! So yeah, I just wanted to share with you what we used to call them when I was younger and if you didn't know about this plants particular Behavior well now you do and you can have a neat story to go along with it! It actually looks like it's praying at night time

    Fascinating! I have never gotten any free ones however I have purchased seriously marked down. They do currently in my area have a bunch of near dead plants however! My particular store seems to overwater mostly. Or they let the bamboo plants with the tiny water containers dry out and the plant begins to die.

    Plenty of employees (well, sometimes lol) have given me free plants at stores. Or at best, they’ll just charge me $1-2. They have to be extremely dry or over-watered for this to happen. And honestly, I notice the second one being more common - so many workers will water the plants because they’re simply told to do it - they don’t differentiate between cactus, bromeliad, ficus or philodendron, etc. I even see _Adenium obesum_ (desert rose) and cacti SOAKING WET, but the ferns and prayer plants will be as dry as the Sahara. It’s so weird. Usually when I know the workers, or start socializing with them, we will be talking and then they offer the plants for free or cheaper.

    I think it depends on the workers you talk to. Many times I’ve asked and been granted permission to collect fallen pieces of succulents and vines. Other times, I’ve asked for price reduction and usually they’ve said yes. There was one worker who was always super reasonable with my requests. Well, this was all in Texas so I don’t know if that’s a big part of my experiences 😅

  • @erikm8372
    @erikm8372 Год назад

    Another concern I often have at stores is for the calathea/geoppertia, maranta, stromanthe, ctenanthe, etc.; if these plants are so sensitive to hard water (and can only have distilled or spring water), how do stores keep them selling? Clearly they just water everything heavily with the same water source. The hard water and chlorine can cause the brown leaves. Also happens in Dracaena/sansivieria and some Alocasia… I do see Marantaceae family plants frequently looking bad though…and I’ve inherited some from businesses!

    They are not cages . They are netty pots. They are used in hydroponic gardening, so maybe the plants that have them were grown in water then transferred to soil. Some people say they cause no problems whereas others say they do. Clearence plants, in some cases, are horribly neglected so why not just replant from the start.

    Not plants, but produce. And like you, being at the right place at the right time. It was at the grocery store I go to all the time and the employees recognize me. I was looking for avocados to make guacamole that afternoon. The produce guy was culling the avocados and I commented that I needed ripe ones. So he pulled out a couple from the throw-away bin he had going. He told me to tell the checker that "Ray said these are free because otherwise they were being thrown out." Well, it worked. So I can see how you got the Christmas plant pots - preplanted with plants that were now dying, for free. And as long as you were taking them, they might as well give you the other's destined for the trash bin. Neither you nor I, are stalking these employees trying to get a freebie!

I said since you're throwing them out could I have a few. They said no they had to throw them out. I then asked if they throw them out back in this dumpster. Cause yes I was thinking I will just go snag them when they throw them out. She said yes but I have my worker break them they will be in many pieces. I looked at her and said what a waste, and yall are being so wasteful. Here you have a customer who wants to buy some yet you say no, and you have to throw them in the dumpster and break them so no one can use them.
