    I believe Vietnam didn’t use a translator to show USA/Australia/Colombia (who joked about her language barrier) that she could attempt to speak English. That gesture spoke VOLUMES to me.

      All candidates knew the pros and cons of the game. Politically correct to hear that English is not a requisite to win the crown but frankly, in real life application if you're lost in translation then that would be too ironic. This early all bets should take time to strengthen all their weak spots without ifs and buts.

    Philippines was the only one who answered the Final 3 question (final word) correctly. Venezuela and especially South Africa did not answer the second part of the question. SA had a copy and paste answer from Top to Top 3. Philippines was sincere and gave a strong answer even for Top 5. The marijuana question is difficult and she did well.

      I agree. It was succinct and to the point. I heard others saying she contradicted herself. That is not the case if you think about it. In terms of legalization, it becomes freely available for both medical and recreational use. Her point was that she approves of the medical purpose, but unlimited availability for recreation is not good. By saying everything is good in moderation, she is essentially saying that she does not support unlimited availability for recreation.

      Her answer was plenty anymore would be too risky. Would be hard for her to publicly comment on drug use as her country is having major problems with jailing and killings for drug use in their country now and it’s a super controversial topic with Dueterte in government.

    Hi, Nia! I am afraid of being harsh in my comments, but I got very angry all the time with people that seems to really ignore all the controversy with Miss USA during Miss Universe, specially the situations with Miss Vietnam and Miss Cambodja. To be honest, I really don't understand the support you give to Miss USA 2018. I assume it is because she is your countrywoman. What you guys can't see, in my opinion, is that beauty is more than face and body. If we consider only this, she is not even better than any other contestant in the Top 20. For the records, I am not saying she is not beautiful considering the beauty patterns in media. For me, as a someone outside of American culture, she is so a character from a movie "Clueless". That controversial attitude with Miss Vietnam and Miss Cambodja were so childish, clearly from a spoiled girl that doesn't understand that there are more than USA in the world. I really believe she was there (in the top 20) because USA put a lot of money in this pageant, but the fact that she made the cut is so ignoring she wasn't able to be Miss Universe. It is almost awarding something that should be reprimanded. The girls that move to the next round (after prelims) should be able to be Miss Universe, all of them! That should be a criteria! And for me, after all these facts, she wasn't a deserving candidate to be there. It would be great if you guys close to MISS USA ORG could give some advices to them, maybe preparing the girls to compete with people that deserve respect. You should to say them that there is no hierarchy when we talk about different cultures. Oh, my God, I am so angry with it.

    *Puerto Rico was better in prelims than during the finals. During the finals, she still tried to beam confidence and smiled, but you could see in her eyes and overall facial expression that the competition got in her nerves; she lost the spark. She was nervous and shaky, and we at the venue saw it. Before the final 5 was called, Puerto Rico's face was almost all white, like she sprayed vinegar on her face. South Africa was my 2nd runner up, Venezuela my 1st runner up. And Philippines. God, was she wonderful! She was the girl to beat from day 1, and no one - absolutely no one - came close. She just has this air of majesty about her, and when she did her walk and those turns during the finals, she combined her majesty with a subtle sexiness, which was magic. One of the most complete Miss Universe winners of all time, in my opinion. Undoubtedly a well deserved win. Even Denise Quinones, Lupita Jones, and Gabriela Isler who were at the audience were clapping for her, and all had smiles whenever it was her time to walk and do her thing on stage. Natalie Glebova also said she's the most complete girl, that's why she won. Philippines has been sending really great girls, and hope they continue to do so. Catriona Gray, you were amazing! Have a beautiful reign as Miss Universe. Love from Canada* 😘

    Sorry, I disagree about Miss USA being worthy of getting a spot in the top 10 (or top 20 even). She doesn't have the stature (height, form, beauty) of many of the others. You would hope that intelligence would make up for what was lacking. But her exchange with Steve was cringeworthy at best, not really because of Steve, but because of how awkwardly she tried to extend the conversation. Additionally, her controversial video with Colombia and Australia also demonstrates that she does not exercise good judgment.

Her demeanor, speech, diction, and facial expressions looked like someone in high school who was excited to go to a prom. But I hope she and the current Miss Universe would get along like Olivia Jordan and Pia Wurtzbach did.

    The top 3 all spoke beautifully you are right, but there must only be one who did the best in q&a portion among the three.
    I was astounded by Miss Philippines' answer who I "think" answered the question eloquently that purveys so much substance.
    Let's accept the fact that she won because she has exhibited an exceptional determination and absolute dedication, plus her wits and authenticity.
    I can still smell insecurity and disgust from those whose bet didn't win and she did, or perhaps can never accept the fact that she was the strongest candidate.

Her answer "Personally, I think it should not in any way interrupt her duties. She should celebrate her femininity," (Applause) Thank you... That would be really bad, just like in World Cup they bring team from Asia that are less good then some in Europe who did not qualify. They do that because they don't want these countries contestants to give up on their dream. Some countries in sport, same in pageant, don't have huge program to back contestant. In West Europe they can get valued elsewhere then Pageant. Poor countries care a lot about Pageant, it's accessible, give them exposure, and they feel great getting represent like that. West Europe don't need that, they get recognize in other fields. Again, it's no disrespect to poorer countries, but need to understand that if it go to the merit only, u won't see much of Asia in Soccer world cup and West Europe in Pageant, and these woman who dream of going there one day will just quit because there no hope for them. This is part of *political correctness*, which is what Pageant Q/A are about (giving neutral answer and such), they want to please everyone.

    Nia I am not bashing anyone including you but I will give you my opinion as you are giving yours and you are also asking for mine:
    1. Catriona Gray's answer in the top 3 Q&A re: what was the lesson in life that you would apply in your reign as Miss Universe? She was the only one that answered from the heart about the hardship of life in the Philippines affecting the children and that she made it her life's mission to help them as Miss Universe. That, and her beauty and performance with the swimsuit, that slow turn in the prelims and that Lava gown went viral catching the attention of TYRA BANKS!!!!!
    2. Miss Venezuela had a beautiful attitude after Catriona was crowned, smiling and hugging the new Queen of the Universe, and was the first to greet her as Cat returned from her triumphant first walk.
    3. Miss USA was not worthy to be in 20, she should have been replaced by Miss Peru who was more beautiful and statuesque and no record of being backhandedly mean to fellow contestants who does not speak English, just stating my opinion and not bashing, and did not have a high pitched voice and a very nasal laugh. Just adored Deshauna Barber whoeheartedly rooting for the Philippines unlike you who is very biased towards Miss Puerto Rico and Colombia. Well we won and they lost so better luck next time. Maybe if they someone as beautiful, kind hearted and talented as Catriona Gray, they might win.
    4. Only 5 Asian countries are super fans of pageants: Philippines, India, Thailand, Japan, Korea,Vietnam, and Indonesia. The rest are lukewarm but I agree that Europe and Africa should be lumped together as they are the weakest countries.
    6. Catriona is phonetically pronounced as Ca-tree-ona.
    7. I am a physician of 40 years and with this wanna be physician from South Africa pouting in the background as Miss Venezuela was smiling and hugging Ca-tree-ona, she won't last in medicine for being a sore looser as she will be eaten alive by my profession, and by removing herself from the Miss Universe instagram account, and when bashed put herself back in it.
    8. I don't believe you and MJ Lastimosa were good friends in Doral in MU 2014. Did you go to Palawan with her during MU 2016? I think you did but I may be wrong.
    9. The Philippines is the number 1 beauty powerhouse in Asia because we have 16 major crowns of the major beauty pageants: 4 Miss Universe, 6 Miss International, 4 Miss Earth, 1 Miss World. 1 Miss Supranational. As you said we are one of the nicest people on earth, always smiling and fun loving, just don't get on our bad side by talking more about Latinas and just talking 15 seconds about Miss Philippines and 3/4th of your video about Latinas and Miss USA. I get it. That is who you are but please play fair.
    10. Why don't you do a tribute to the Miss Universe by doing some reserch on her. She may make you a fan of hers yet.

      I agree with you with some part and disagree with you with others. I do agree USA never ever should have been call top 20. She never had that it factor in the first place. This is my feeling for the Philippines. As you can see my youtube my top 3 and maybe 4 in my list was Philippines. The problem in looks that I had with Philippines was her weight. Even in the Philippines people were talking about her body. She had 1 year to be in shape and her body looks worst. This Lava Walk has been done in Venezuela for many years but was no longer popular. She just copy what Venezuela already did. Is nothing new just for the new generations. Also, her first question was bad. She did not answer the question well. Nia is not the only youtube who thinks that. If you see other youtubers they say the same thing. Her first question was bad and she was not in good shape she should have never made it that far. The only thing that saved her is she had 2 Filipinas judges, hosted in Asia, and no male judges. Even a gay male would not vote for Cat just for the body. Look at Carson the host. Lu also did not have Philippines in her list. She was a model and she was a teacher for these girls. Ashley had her in her list but she is a plus size model and Cat looks out of shape. Tyra also always had weight problems she even said it herself. She had problems getting hired because of her weight. So she liked Cat. So the people who liked Cat were over weight models. Thin people don’t like Cat. And if males were judging she would never make it past the swimwear.

    1. I don't share the same thoughts on Steve with you. I'm no way did I notice he putting the girls down. It's comedy and it worked well. The stuff with Miss USA happened with Iris in 2016 and she still won plus the talks with Steve was not scored. Maybe you just don't like him.
    2. During the final 5 Q and A. I believe PHILLIPINES has one of the best answers asides Venezuela and after the top 3 Q and A, it was very obvious to me who should win.

      Salim Dimack I agree with you on the first point. I was wondering if Steve would have acted in favour of the girl’s requests, doesn’t that make him look too much of a creep? Also he is a married man. It’s hard for a male host to be cordial especially in the Me Too Era so I thought that Steve did fine, not excellent but fine.
      If we really were to look into good hosts I think the OG Bob Baker was the best for me, although he may come off as demeaning to some of the girls (especially those that don’t speak English) at least he tried to make them feel comfortable on stage.

    What is the most important lesson you’ve learned and how will you apply it to your time as Miss Universe?
    VENEZUELA: I grew up in a family filled with women and each one of them taught me something very important. But what I always remember is by working hard and chasing dreams and by having courage and strength and willingness to achieve these dreams, we can achieve anything we want in this lifetime.
    SOUTH AFRICA: Throughout my life, I’ve been exposed to both those who are privileged and underprivileged and what I learned is we are all human. We all want to be loved, we all want to belong, and we all want to be seen so we should treat each other that way.
    PHILIPPINES:I work a lot in the slums of Tondo, Manila and the life there is poor and very sad. And I’ve always taught to myself to look for the beauty of it and look in the beauty of the faces of the children and to be grateful. And I will bring this aspect as a Miss Universe to see situations with a silver lining and to assess where I could give something, where I could provide something as a spokesperson. And this I think if I can teach people to be grateful, we can have an amazing world where negativity could not grow and foster and children will have smile on their faces.
    Miss Nia i think Philippines got the best answer dont say all of them have good answers. the answers of Venezuela and SA iis far from the question. it says that how will you apply what have you learned.
    Venezuela answer where the application there? South Africa wheres the application there?.
    Philippines said I will bring this aspect as a Miss U to see situations with a silver lining and to assess where I could give something, where I could provide something as a spokesperson. And this I think if I can teach people to be grateful, we can have an amazing world where negativity could not grow and foster and children will have smile on their faces.

    17:41 what? After top 3 final question and answer, you couldn’t tell who would win? it was so obvious Philippines gave the best answer. The question has two parts: a life lesson and how to apply the lesson as a miss universe. Philippines was the only one who actually and completely answered the question. South Africa kinda rehashed her answer from her top 5 answer (“we are all human”) and answered only the first part; ended her answer too soon. Venezuela kinda answered the question but her answer sounded generic (reach for your dreams). Philippines actually gave a visual concrete life lesson and explained how the lesson applies to her: finding beauty in a poverty-stricken place where she does her charity work and applying that mindset of hope and gratitude as a miss universe to help others.
    So i am scratching my head why you couldn’t tell who would win based on the final 3 answer. Philippines did well in prelims, swim suit, gown (that fiery gorgeous gown). And with that amazing final 3 answer, she was obviously the winner.

    I just found some inconsistencies with your statements, Nia. On this video you're saying you had no idea who was going to win after the Top 3 Q and A but on the other video you said you had no doubt it was Cat after the Top 3 Q and A. Just makes me a little skeptical about your sincerity.

    Two comments: a) I liked the wings during the swimsuit round. I believe there were an homage to traditional Thai sculpture. b) I'm in agreement that lumping Asia and Africa together seems illogical. My suggestion. Keep 20 semi-finalists. Have 10 wildcards. Then 2 each from Asia, Africa, Europe, North America & Caribbean, Central & South America. I think this better balances the fact that traditionally the strongest delegates come from Asia and Latin America. Having 5 come from Europe is simply too many given the current caliber of European delegates.

    Thanks for your review! This competition had SO many potential candidates (one of my personal favorites was Vietnam), but Catriona basically won the crown since she entered the competiton. I too was nervous about her answer during the Top 5 Q&A. The best answer in my opinion during that round was South Africa’s. But during the Final Q&A there was absolutely no doubt that she was going to win after her answer. Venezuela and South Africa did good too but they didn’t answer it as throughly as Catriona. South Africa started off the question strong, but failed to answer the second half of the question. If only she followed up with that second part, the competition would have been even more TIGHT! All in all I am happy with the results!

    I don't think you really paid attention on the Q&A, both on Top 5 and for the Last 3. If you were able to understand their answer, Cat slayed the Top 5 Question, short yet impactful answer. As for the Final 3 Q&A, Cat answered the best, Venezuela does the same, giving out a lesson she learned and how she would apply it, while the ever beautiful South Africa answered the question gracefully but sad to say, not on point. Just my opinion tho

      I'm rooting for Cat but after hearing her answer I was feeling nervous about her chances because it's too concised as if she's rushing to finish Q&A. It was not the worst and not the best, just safe for me because let's be honest, it was a difficult question. I think South Africa and Puerto Rico gave the best answers in the top 5 Q&A and I think NIA was right. In this video she mentioned that the probability Cat made it to top 3 is that her scores after the swimsuit and evening gown were too high for other candidates to keep up with her.

    • @imje6777
      @imje6777 6 лет назад +4

      エストラダルジー probably. The question given to her was a hard one. But i think the reason why she entered the top3 was because others did not gave better answers.

    • @eigen1255
      @eigen1255 6 лет назад +3

      @@imje6777 Catriona's opinion was moderate, but she delivered it with confidence, and she seemed genuine. I thought she did well on the question, which was the most controversial topic in the Top 5 Q and A. Miss Australia in Miss Universe 2015 was asked a similar question, if I remember correctly.

    • @imje6777
      @imje6777 6 лет назад

      eigen yes her answer was on point. But she could have skipped the alcohol and cigarette part coz it made some confusions that it was good when taken moderately.

    • @eigen1255
      @eigen1255 6 лет назад +2

      @@imje6777 There is research that some types of alcohol like red wine can benefit cardiovascular health when taken in moderation, although alcohol is probably not a good idea for those with personal history or family history of substance abuse. Strangely, there is also research that found lower rates of Parkinson's Disease among cigarette smokers, although smoking is a health risk for many other diseases. It seems that Catriona was thinking similar to how a debater would reason-- she would anticipate the opposing viewpoint and then strengthen her argument by presenting why it's a better alternative to the argument of the opponent; if successful, she would, in some measure, be able to weaken the opponent's argument.

    1. Agree on the changing of regional assignments. Or better remove it and have the top 15/20 based on merits and performance.
    2. I had guessed 1 out of 5 for European region (Great Britain). Lots of surprises from this region. Agree that Kenya and Iceland should have been selected.
    3. Nepal had a strong preliminary performance. I know she would make it after watching her short clip on RUclips, she is a good speaker. Also, she generated the most money during the charity auction event, that was the first time I heard her talk. Beautiful face too.
    4. I like the swimsuit, it was designed by the Thai Princess, probably the reason as to why the “little wings” were there to incorporate a Thai touch to the outfit. I maybe wrong but it looks more like Thai architecture inspired than wings. It looks like the the edges of the Golden Thai Buddhist temples.
    5. Philippines’ question during top 5 is a hard one. Marijuana is a very sensitive topic to talk about and a better way of answering something that is controversial is to talk less. She chose not to provide a lengthy answer, which I know she is capable of doing, to limit remarks that might be viewed negatively by others.
    5. My top 3 are Philippines, Venezuela and Puerto Rico. PR was flawless and so charming the entire time.
    6. All 3 were gorgeous but the best answer was given by Philippines. It answered both questions raised - the lesson learned and how to use it on her reign as MissU. It was a complete answer.
    Others: l am okay with Steve’s overall performance (7/10). I enjoyed Neyo and the inclusion and touch of the Thai culture.

      I think that was one of the reasons why she didn't make the Top 20. But more importantly, she didn't perform that well in the Prelims. She lacked the energy and spark that she had when she competed in Miss Colombia. So her subpar prelims, her comment about Miss Spain, as well as some other shady moments caught on camera kept her out of the Top 20.

Her shoulders were so stiff, her facial reactions were not enchanting to viewers, lack of gracefulness. Actually she's got the looks, she can be a winner but i think she wasn't that prepared to compete that time compared to other candidates. Latinas are really beautiful, specially colombians, venezuelans and mexicans. However, in every competition, whether it is a pageant, sports, even music should undergo quality time for proper trainings and preparations. Goid luck to future miss u delegates.

      before we put Colombia's comment on transgenders joining MU in negative light, come to think of this situation: since MUO already allowed transgenders to join MU competition, what if all the candidates in miss universe are transgenders, do you think MUO will still have the same prestige which it has to this day? Is MUO ready to be known as a pageant of transgenders? MUO is an organization that celebrates uniqueness and individuality. if they allow transgenders to join MU, i don't believe that the unique individuality and beauty of transgenders will be seen by the world. they need to have a platform of their own to show to the world the unique beauty of transgenders instead of riding on the platform of pageants for naturally born women.

      even before the entire debacle with Miss USA and Miss Australia. Colombia had a couple of instances too that was captured by fans that was not necessarilly pleasing. that being said though her prelims was OK too bad she was followed by MISS COSTA RICA who i think had a stronger preliminary performance and also one of the Darlings of the Press and Locals along with miss Venezuela. the Online hype did not necessarily reflected what was happening on ground. if you have followed the press that was covering the event you can tell that colombia was practically doomed even before the prelims

I was once a child watching this pageant dreaming of the day that maybe I could have that opportunity. Fortunately I did have that opportunity representing the state of West Virginia and the national Queen USA pageant in Los Angeles California in 2016. Not to be rude but in my honest opinion, I do not believe that Miss USA 2018, deserved any praise that she was getting. As being someone from Vietnam and having to learn English when I came to America, I can easily understand the effort and struggles Miss Universe Vietnam 2018, H'Hen Nie, had to go through in order to speak and to interact with others that are not from her country. Plus, Vietnamese isn't even her first language so to even learn Vietnamese and English is something we should all give her credit for. Anyway, as I was trying to get across, Miss USA 2018, was not worthy of the support because for someone with that high of a title she was doing a poor job at showing grace, sincerity, and compassion to her fellow Miss Universe sister. What she had presented and portrayed was nonetheless nasty behavior, I wouldn't have even given her the recognition of being in Top 20 but that's just me.

    I think everyone has talked about the girls but not about how well the judges did their job. Lets not forget that since day 1 the girls are already assessed and evaluated. And the interview with the judges I feel carry so much weight. And that is the part of the competition that we aren't privy to. I had Miss India, Miss Iceland and Miss Peru among the best girls but the only explanation for their not making it is obviously the interview with the judges. Miss Canada was so gorgeous but I think she spoke often enough about being an engineer and you have the legitimate engineers in Canada shaking their heads that it reflected badly on her. It appears that being an engineer and engineering technician are so distinctly different. Miss South Africa spoke about being human on both her top 5 and top 3 questions it sounded rehearsed and the way she abruptly ended her top 3 answer certainly reinforced that impression. I think Miss Venezuela deserved to be first runner up. She was so poised, warm and elegant. Its just too bad that neither she nor Miss South Africa addressed the how will you apply the lesson you've learned as Miss Universe. I thought Miss Puerto Rico was stunning. But did you see her hair in the evening gown competition? It was so flat. Pity really. Her hair during the preliminaries was styled better. As for Catriona? She stood out from the day she arrived. Es un triunfo bien merecido. Felicidades a Filipinas.
