Totally agree with you. A lot are sad that Venezuela didn't get the crown but she did not answer the question completely. Philippines answered both questions, was specific and remarkable. I also agree that based on the answers Venezuela should've taken the 1st runner up spot but I saw a tally sheet showing the scores, SA apparently got higher scores on most portion. By the way, Puerto Rico wore a sherri hill gown.

Something to also keep in mind is that the answer itself isn't the final deciding factor. I don't know how the final judging looks, but in other countries, I know the final look is the final opportunity for judges to rank, and not score, their choice of winners. I've seen girls bomb the final answer, but by that point, it didn't matter because the judges already picked their favourites :). I feel bad for contestants who are hard on themselves or pausing or thinking a question could have been answered differently, but sometimes it really, truly, wasn't even the determining factor or "what made them lose the crown"

you are right about Cat knowing how to work the camera.. in an interview, one of her mentors said that during the evening gown portion at some point Cat walked slower bcoz Miss Venezuela took a while. she waited for the camera before she walked and do her slow mo turn. Cat and her team really prepared for MU, no wonder she won!

If you guys have watched Catriona's send off interview on the show called "the bottomline", you know how she was told to pay attention if she will be asked to answer a two-part question. It's a 37 minute video but you'll see how prepared she is for the q&a,she aced every question asked by the guest pannelists. The host Boy Abunda, is also her q&a coach.

Watching behind the scenes videos, these girls seemed like genuinely good hearted people who are also friends and close to Miss Philippines. Thank you for touching on Canada’s deception. It takes such hard work to achieve a degree. Her telling on national stage that’s she’s an engineer vs a technician is absolutely disappointing. He’s a college degree is worthwhile but a university degree in that same field is way harder. She also said in multiple interviews that her gpa was super high something like 3.96 well that makes a huge difference if you’re in college or university. A 3.96 in a Canadian engineering degree is absolutely stunning as opposed to that same gpa from college.... I love miss Canada but I too was dissapointed in her deception to the audience

Composed a song about helping children and pioneering a change , and Even made a video of the 3 island groups, featuring the people and the culture for each and how surprised I was coz i don’t even know some of those facts. U can really see how big heart is upon watching her actions and listening to how she speaks. very admirable🔥 She also have scoliosis but that didn’t let her stop her from achieving her passion. love❤️

When you competed at Miss Universe ( which you did beautifully), when you were not selected for the top 5
1) Who became your favorite for the crown?
2) Was there any contestants who didn't make top 15 a mess. Like she was so disappointed that she didn't want to continue with the show, or just in a down mood after?
3) How are the women supported after backstage when they dont advance each round?

1) Favourite for the crown - honestly this isn't what you want to hear but I can't answer this. Every woman on that stage would have been a wonderful Miss Universe and it ultimately comes down to the decision of a select panel of judges. I think Demi did a wonderful job and represented the 2018 cohort extremely well :) 2) I didn't hear of anyone in particular but there are always women who do this and understandably so.. I believe in being a good sport to the end but can sympathize when this title may have been your world for a few months then you didn't place and it is highly emotional in the moment .... 3) YES!! there are hugs. there are tears. there are words of support. then there is simply laughter and the weight of the pressure of it all being lifted then people can just enjoy the moment and the rest of the show. A true emotional rollercoaster. 90+ girls compete and 1 wins... you have to enjoy the ride and not take it too seriously xx
Okay, that moment when you have to add that part in the video where you're all disheveled like a mad scientist who just discovered something new and gushed over catriona's gown, that moment made me click the subscribe button. Haha, you're so fun to watch and so genuine. You focus on the important things and I can feel your energy. Thank you for sharing

I think it's good that they removed the Ms. Congeniality award because it can create unnatural friendly attitude. So without that award they can see who are really genuine in being friends or who are just being so "pageant only" attitude

I have the impression that the wing thingee in the swimsuit round resembles Thai native aesthetics you can find in some of their national costumes as well.
Oh I love that then! Now that I think about it, it is similar to some temple designs. I wish they explained that ahead of time. Makes it more impactful!
i think i saw this in one feature that since the accent in the swimsuit competition was designed by a thai princess the wings resembles in her own styling where birds are evident in her dresses.

Yes he designed gowns for Iris and Pia before winning or their last walk. Miss Canada's gown was STUNNING, I really saw a crown put on that dress (but not on Miss Canada). However, Siera and Lauren mentioned current Miss Canada have issues with honesty about her degree something so I get why and thankfully, she didn't steal a spot in top 5.

Actually, the other translating version of Miss Vietnam’s answer that you just read is not the best. As a 4th year uni student majoring in translating and interpreting Vietnamese-English, I can give you a better one, short but fully convey all the meaning: “Personally I do not think that the #metoo movement has gone too far. It is because protecting human’s well-being and protecting women from sexual harrassment are extremely fundamental rights. In life, we as human beings all need to be protected because it gives us the right of freedom. Thank you. “

I was super disappointed with the translation for Miss Vietnam in the top 5 Q&A. Unfortunately all the contestants needing a translator’s answer can only be as good as the translator’s take! Regardless I think Miss Philippines win is well deserving!

On another note, I hope MU Organization gives you the hosting job next year to replace the other two who obviously seemed to be leaning towards other candidates. For as hosts in such high pageantry, they need to be neutral and mind their emceeing business better!
Dear, we all love Cat, but the problem with Filipinos is that we only focus on our candidate and get annoyed when other people don't support us. If we set aside our biases and check out other candidates too, then we'll understand Carson's and Lu's picks. Listen to what Margie Moran (and Gloria Diaz) said that Cat had a hard time... Too many gorgeous, well-poised, confident, smart women out there. In fact, Cat's 15 minute intro, Top 20 interview (she copied one line from Megan Young), swimsuit catwalk and Top 5 Q&A were good but not the best. It was only towards the end that Cat really stood out.
@@kristinedemesa7274 The audience has every right to support their own CANDIDATE, but, as an emcee or a hosts of a high pageantry, the expectation is to be neutral. Now, Gloria has her own take, we have our own eyes and ears to observe and hear from the beginning to end.

What i love about your reviews is that you are very objective and unbiased with your comments. I just saw another review before i clicked yours and i find her comments very lopsided, favoring candidates with her ethnic background and nationality over others.
So she is a biomedical technologist. Well for me she could have said she was a technologist. I am an industrial technologist and there is a huge difference in engineering and technology but most of the time they overlap and commonly viewed by people as the same.

Great review, Lauren! Been waiting for this! I was rooting for Catriona from the start! Followed by South Africa and/or Vietnam. I was really upset that the interpreter did a sloppy job about Vietnam's answer. It should have been translated WORD FOR WORD. You could see Vietnam's face, kind of surprised, when she delivered a sentence or two long and the translation is just few words. She could've been in the top 3! South Africa's performance was flawless until the final question, if she nailed that it would've been a close fight between her and Philippines. Too many outstanding girls this year, I wanted Japan and Cambodia to make the top 20 cut...it's a shame. And your prediction was really close, good job!

And for the record, that local media, Rapler, who embodied all the negativity in the Philipines instead of celebrating something beautiful was sometimes had issue of circulating faked news. They just want to make bad in good news. Few Filipinos talked about romantizing poverty in our country, but Catriona just pointed out the truth of what happenings in our country. And the Rapler sucked that negativity and circulate it in the media... :(

@@honestlyfitness I figured when they said that it included the whole outfit (the swimsuit, wings, and colorful sarong). Sometines, the designer of the swimsuit has input in the overall styling but who knows 🤷♀️. It would make sense to step up the styling from the prelims to the final night.
Hi Lauren.... I am a 70 year old Filipino-Australian male (left Philippines at age 29 and been in Australia in past 41 years). As a retiree, I spent 10 months out of 12 in the Philippines. I was 21 years old when Miss Gloria Diaz won the 1969 Miss Universe and since then I have been following this contest for as much as I could. But in a week before Catriona went to Bangkok, I was mesmerized by her humility, talent and intelligence. Since then, I searched for all her interviews, and was in awe of her ability to be so natural and lovely. She may not be the most beautiful among our previous year's candidates, but she's a complete package. I didn't know about her Filipino-Australian heritage not until she won. Ironically, I was in Cairns, Queensland to visit my son more than a year ago (I am from Sydney). In at least three occasions, I saw you in RUclips commenting in recent 2018 MU. All the time, I thought you were Jennifer Hawkins (Australian latest Miss Universe). Pardon my ignorance because I saw her few times only on TV and to me, you look absolutely the same and was surprised how funny and entertaining Miss Hawkins could be (sorry my mistake). I am very impressed in the way you present yourself... and you're such a beautiful woman, coming from a man who had been married and divorced twice to two beautiful Filipina Nurses (he he he). Congratulations... you are so adorable and keep up with the good work. I am very proud of Catriona... she came at the right time to inspire and unite Filipinos in time when we felt that the past couple of years had been divisive and desperate period in our lives. Filipinos are very proud of her and what she stands for. She redeemed our soul drowned in valley of despair for being our advanced Christmas gift. That local newspaper represents everything Catriona was talking about. She was not romanticising anything and poverty was clearly not the focus of her speech. It was about seeing the good in everything even in negative situations. She is taking inspiration from the children living in the slums that while they do live in poverty, they can still smile and somehow find a way to be positive. Also the essence of her speech is about gratitude. Catriona is fighting negativity. That local newspaper is promoting negativity and should be ashamed.

What kinda engineering degree do you hold, Lauren? I’m currently studying industrial & systems engineering at University of Wisconsin. it’s definitely not a walk in the park and idk if I should stick with it.
HEY! I studied industrial engineering as well. Girl I feel you haha, but there is always a light at the end of the tunnel. Working in technology now, I have the skills, knowledge and experience that help me understand in depth work of developers, computer scientists and engineers. I personally love the UI / UX design side of IE which is applicable in so many areas. I wanted to quit too (many times at that), but it's worth it in the long run girl. How far in are you and what else would you consider? If you want to quit because you're passionate about something else, that's a separate conversation. If you want to quit because it's hard.... remember that's how everyone feels haha. I can't tell you the number of times where a class average was like 32% throughout the semester with the intention of weeding kids out and getting people to drop out, but it gets bell curved at the end to adjust for the difficulty of the course (a few friends actually ended up with over 100% once or twice). YOU CAN DO THIS and you will feel SO GOOD when you have that accreditation (especially as a woman).... if you love it :) - hope this helps!!
Lauren Howe Thank you! I just completed my third semester and my grade has been mediocre. I do like it, but it’s just a bit disheartening seeing so many of my friends dropped and changed their major. At Wisconsin we also have to do data programming, and it really isn’t my thing (I HATE C++). I’m considering getting a tutor to help me do better next semester though. Thanks for your advice! I’m gonna try to stick to it.
