    You should check out The Royal Institute of Magic Series by Victor Kloss. It is in the age range of the Harry Potter series, i felt the same wonder as the Harry Potter Books when I listened to them. The first 3 books are free to listen to with the Audible Plus Catalogue. You do need an Audible Subscription though. The magical classes are very different. Their are classes in Scholar, Trading and Diplomacy, as well as Magical Combat. it is set in a hidden magical world with goblins, elves, Pegasi, Wyverns and dragons. And they have spell shooters instead of wands, they are like wooden guns that shoot spell pellets. The key to using them is willpower instead of shouting weird sounding spells with funny names. And there is some funny banter between the 3 main characters. You should check it out.

    Ursula Le Guin’s A Wizard of Earthsea, published in 1968, used the wizarding school trope when Ged went to the island of Roke to learn magic. I’m not certain of earlier occurrences of the trope, so I can’t claim she invented it, and the book doesn’t spend so much time on relationships between the students, though Ged has his Draco Malfoy in Jasper and his Ron/Hermione in Vetch. But it’s a real classic of the genre!

    The Summoner series is one of my favorite series. The magic system is cool and the direction the next books go was sometimes surprising. The only book I half didn't like was the prequel.

    Scarlett lost in the five lands by rajendra sarilla has a wonderful magic school set up and the story is quite intriguing. Its about a fifteen year old warrior princess called scarlett that ends up in a different world where society is divided into four races based on skin colours - blue, pale, brown, and silver. What i loved most about the book were powerful female characters and brilliant action scenes. It's a fast paced novel with just 170 pages. This book is so good that it may become a big hollywood movie in future if it gets enough attention. I read it on kindle since paperback was not available in foreign countries.

    I mostly do older fantasy, and pre-Harry Potter there wasn't much where the actual action took place at a magical school and the protagonist was a student. Diskworld has quite a few stories that involve their magical school (the "Unseen University") but the protagonists are almost always the staff, who have a pathological fear of students. His YA series (starring Tiffany Aching) does involve a student witch, but on the Disk witching isn't something you learn in school it's something you learn from hard practical experience. The girls team in Wheel of Time are technically magical students for books 2-5, but they don't spend a lot of time in class.

    Not a recommendation but rather something to look forward to: "A Deadly Education" by Naomi Novik.
    I recently read Novik's Spinning Silver and it was an excellent tale with many Slavic myths interwoven in it! After checking out her twitter and website I was quite intrigued by the description of her new book, which is based on the legends and myths around the Scholomance - a Transylvanian school for black magic, run by the Devil himself. I'm really looking forward to seeing what Novik does with this story.
    That said, I'll definitely pick up Blood Song.

    • @IasminaEdina

      This is exciting to me for two reasons. I read Uprooted by her and loved it, have been meaning to read more of her stuff for a while. But then I am Romanian, so a magic school set in Transylvania? Omg yes. Adding that to my TBR right now 😍

    • @Grimscribe732
      @Grimscribe732 4 года назад

      @@IasminaEdina I just picked up Uprooted yesterday. Probably will start reading around the end of next week, when I'm done with my two current reads. I can highly recommend Spinning Silver, it's easily one of my favourite standalone fantasy books.
      Regarding A Deadly Education, it's going to be a long wait till September. I was really disappointed when I found out the book isn't out yet. Everything Fantasy related to Slavic, Germanic, Norse, and Anglo-Saxon folklore is usually an instant-read for me ^^

      Having found this video late, Definitely pick up A Deadly Education - amazing book. The second book in the series is also out, which I was equally blown away by.
      Great video! I came across it while doing some world building for a Kids on Brooms campaign that I'll be running next month. Still hammering out the details of how magic will work and what the course catalogue will look like.

    I think calling The Magicians “Harry Potter for adults” is grossly misleading. It has essentially nothing in common with Harry Potter and if you go into it with that mindset you will be severely disappointed. Not that it’s not a good series; I still think it’s worth reading. Just absolutely nothing like HP.

    • @IasminaEdina
      @IasminaEdina  4 года назад +2

      I see your point. I think most books that market themselves as "like Harry Potter" are not like HP at all. It's more that if you enjoyed the HP series, you're likely going to enjoy this because it has a couple similar aspects. And I think that is true for The Magicians as well. At least that is how I see it 🙂

      They are going to a magic school and having to face down an all powerful evil magician, so there is that in common.
