a deadly education by naomi novik just came out and it’s now my favorite book!! it’s a magic high school setting but it’s got a really different take on magic learning and the magic world as a whole.
How about Nevermoor? Trials gets her in and the next one starts her lessons. One of the most wonderful series on the market now. Can’t wait for Hollowpox!
My favorite magical school at the moment is the Wundrous Society in the Nevermoor series. I'd give a limb to be a WunSoc Member! I do have a soft spot for the school in The Exiled Queen (and re KOTLC, a soft spot for Keefe, specifically). In Other Lands by Sarah Rees Brennan is also brilliant.
You are such a big influence on my style development!!! the cozy, chic, fall vibe you have made me simply fall in love with it!!! I really hope you do a closet tour soon and show us your staple pieces ^^
Pretty much everything by Tamora Pierce is amazing. Mostly middle grade/children's lit but still great. Her other world series, The Circle of Magic, also falls in the magical school school setting..
The Nevermoor series is the most whimsical magic school setting and I cannot get over it. CANNOT GET OVER IT. I am super impatient about the next one getting to me. I can’t remember if you’ve read these but if not they are exactly up your alley. In a completely different direction I also love The Magicians. It is not whimsical and I do not necessarily want to live in that world but I do truly love the books and I have always thought the physical/scientific magic they do is interesting.
The school for good and evil is actually a 6 book series. But when focusing on the school, it is the first three books. I love the series! I recommend it!
@@idkhello4306 Thanks, planning to buy the 3-book set physically first and if i'm intrigued to read further, i'd probably go with the ebooks for the last 3.
Omg I read The Name of the Wind and its sequel a few months back and I died so good the writing is. It's one of those books you read the first line and you think to yourself 'oh damn this is gonna be greeeeaaaat 😍 love that feeling
Before watching this video I was thinking my favorite magic shool setting is the university in Name Of The Wind, but how it is so underrated because people don't expect that from that book. Needless to say I got really excited when you mentioned it, thanks for sharing it with the world!
I read the whole keeper series on your recommendation and its one of my absolute favorites! It has its problems but the characters are just so compelling, you can't help but love them all!
Akarnae by Lynette Noni. HIGHLY RECOMMEND the series. Its described as a Harry Potter meets Narnia meets X-Men series. But it honestly drifts into its own tale eventually and its just SO FUN
I was honestly just waiting for you to mention The Name of the Wind from the beginning, haha, it's one of my all time favourites! Some other great books set in magic schools are Carry On by Rainbow Rowell and Wundersmith by Jessica Townsend
The Rogue, The Novice, and The High Lord trilogy by Trudi Canavan is mostly set in a magic university. Love that series, definitely one of my favourites ever, and has a prequel and sequel set of books too!
Magic school setting is seriously the best and I need to check all of these books out! I marathoned The Seven Realms series in September bc of your recommendation and I absolutely loved it! The Exiled Queen was also my favorite bc that magic school setting was really the best. I need to read The Shattered Realms series too!💚
I'm currently reading one of my childhood favourites to my class, Midnight for Charlie Bone! (Children of the Red King series) they are loving the bits about the school
I have the Keeper of the Lost Cities hardcover set in the mail and can’t wait! You mentioned them on so many vlogs over the last couple years and I couldn’t put it off any longer lol
Omg ive been thinking of writing a magic school novel but then realised i didn't actually read many magical school novels, so just in time ! Thank you for the rec!! 💕
Another one i never see mentioned anywhere and it’s pretty fun, quick but def YA. And that’s The Summoner Trilogy. The quickest way to describe is a slight Harry Potter mixed with Pokemon.
Thank you for this video! Was looking for more Middle Grade fantasy series to get absorbed in. Just downloaded The Rithmatist 😊 looking forward to reading it!
Mage Errant is by far my favorite Magic School setting! The characters are wonderful misfits with some kind of handicap in magic. An awesome teacher notices them and decides to take these misfits and teaches them magic in a way meant for their unique circumstances.
Please tell me I was not the only one who thought this was a recommendation video for books like The Magic School Bus HAHAHAHA. I am very intrigued by The School of Good and Evil!!
You should totally read it! It has six books and I am personally a huge fan of it! It also has a movie being worked on and a RUclips’s channel called Ever Never tv which is made by the author and posts updates!
The recent release A Deadly Education by Naomi Novik was such a page turner. Completely takes place in a dark academia setting. The last line of the book makes me crave the next one.
The Philospher's Flight is one of my favorite magic school books. There's a Harry Potter vibe for those who want that, but also something darker going on as well. I really enjoyed it and recommend it to everyone!
Oh dang it, this vid idea is sitting scripted in my drafts. Look at you being on the ball. XD We have different answers too so YAAAAS for more magical school recommendations. Probably my fave fantasy trope ever.
Scarlett lost in the five lands by rajendra sarilla has a wonderful magic school set up and the story is quite intriguing. Its about a fifteen year old warrior princess called scarlett that ends up in a different world where society is divided into four races based on skin colours - blue, pale, brown, and silver. What i loved most about the book were powerful female characters and brilliant action scenes. It's a fast paced novel with just 170 pages. This book is so good that it may become a big hollywood movie in future if it gets enough attention. I read it on kindle since paperback was not available in foreign countries.
Can you do something like this but instead of focusing on schools just about witches? I’m looking for a fun but magical book about a witch that discovers witchcraft or finds out she is a witch, but not in a school setting
I highly recommend Witches of Ash and Ruin by E. Latimer. Such a fun, fast paced read. Almost all the main characters are witches, but they predominantly learn and practice witchcraft at home or in their coven, not in a school. It was refreshing in that sense. Not to mention its set in Ireland and has loads of Celtic mythology references.
If you're looking for more magical school I highly recommend checking out the arcane ascension series by andrew rowe. It's a really fun series with great characters and takes a lot of inspo from anime and video games!
Yes I love this! I think the only school setting I've read is Harry Potter. I definitely need to fix that. Also whenever I heard academia I thought of macadamia and then that made me want white chocolate chip macadamia cookies
The Black Witch Chronicles is an AMAZING fantasy school setting. It follows Elloren Gardner, who attends a magic university with her brothers and she fights back against her government. It also tackles prejudice very well.
I kept reading the title of this video as "Magic School Bus Recommendations" and I was so confused. Definitely pleasantly suprised when I watched it (because, yes, I woukd have watched it either way...)
For anyone who loves interesting and well-developed magic systems and magical schools I would recommend Into the Labyrinth by John Bierce. It was a quick and fun read, and reminded me of Harry Potter and D&D.
I remember reading the first school for good and evil book a long while ago but don't remember anything about it. Planning on rereading it to continue with the series.
The Magesterium Series by Holly Black and Cassandra Clare is a fun middle grade that takes place primarily at a magic school! I know you've read at least the first one, but it's a recommendation for anyone who may be checking the comments!!
oh yes i was looking for this comment! It's like a mix of Harry Potter and Rick Riordan's books i feel like! I absolutely loved it, such great characters and a fun story! *_*
A few of the Valdemar books by Mercedes Lackey probably fit into this category, especially Arrows of the Queen. I'll also mention 'Dragon Singer' within the Dragonriders of Pern series by Anne Mccaffrey, although a) the series is technically sci-fi or at least sci-fantasy, and b) the school in the book is for learning music not magic. It will probably appeal to a lot of people who enjoy magic school settings though, especially if they read 'Dragon Song' first as Dragon Singer is the second in a trilogy.
Why are all the main students of any kind of school be it magical or military in a fantasy book always a prodigy / expert in the field he / she is going to school for ; never an average pupil, slacker or a weakling at least in the beginning of the book ? I want to see a story of an average student being taught by a very good teacher to become if not top magician but at least the most resourceful / street smart magician / warrior.
I don't know if this is exactly what you're looking for but spellslinger by sebastian de castell. The MCs magic doesn't work properly (like it ran out or whatever) so he has to work around that
Magic for Liars by Sarah Gailey kinda fits. It's about a Muggle detective coming to investigate a murder in a magic scholl which is more like your avarage high school rather than the prestigeques Hogwarts-type we're used to. For bonus conflict, the protoganist is summoned by her twin sister, who has magic when she doesn't and now is part of the school staff.
I loved KotLC in 7th grade it had been a recommendation from a friend and I was so thankful for it, usually I'd be able to read a book in the series within one or two days, and I even recommended it to a bunch of other friends who all also really enjoyed it. But then in 8th grade the pacing in the most recent book just felt really slow for me and I honestly didn't enjoy the main character very much, it was really just slow burn for me. The friend who originally recommended it to me doesn't enjoy it now either. But it's been a year and I'm a freshman now, and it feels unright to leave the series unfinished especially since I read so many of the books already plus my taste has changed so maybe I'll like it again. Plus this might make people angry...but I'm a sofitz shipper- 😔

ya know... i just realized i hate the magical school trope. it took me years to finally give in and read HP-all because my sisters insisted i watch the movie when it came out... until that moment i hated HP because Rowling took unforgiveable liberties with the fairytale creatures. and i don't know for certain but i always got the feeling she got the idea from the Worst Witch (which was my favorite "magical school" story/movie when i was growing up. and then there were words like Hogwarts (which i have only heard in the Henson movie Labyrinth...and a few other things.) i also hated that every time i drew an OWL some snot in my classes would accuse me of being obsessed with HP. No interest. i came here to see if there might be some good ones worth looking into and there aren't. i hated school with a passion when i was growing up. it was NOT a fun or useful way to occupy my time. I used to skip classes and lunch period or get a note from teachers in the previous class just to hang out in the library. I would either read books the whole time or help the librarian in the back room...... i loved that back room. it had the best books that for some reason were never put on the shelves. i felt like they were all stashed in there and waiting for ME..... this was years before HP btw, when i found my crowning jewel... The Encyclopedia of Things That Never Were. it was old and falling apart, pages separating from the binding. I had to rescue it because it was destined to be thrown away. I used to while away the hours with that book ... but that's also what got my hackles up with JK.... it was like she had stolen the creatures from my book!! i knew all the intricate details of her so called house elves and their origins. everyone else just THOUGHT they knew! (yes... i am a snob. i own it.) and while i might have forgiven her and fell head over boots for her books, she's the only one. i wanted to find something in the same category to keep the vibe going. and there's nothing. it's all just coattail riding. OR it takes itself too seriously. Worst Witch was finally made into a tv series on netflix and that was just adorable. but .... i really have no desire to go "back to school"..... i want the world. I want something like Labyrinth or the Lion the Witch and Wardrobe (also a liberty taker, but he's allowed, literally building the origin for all of these creatures on their own planet.) ah well... thank you for trying, but i will continue on my way.
I know you meant this as a recommendation video... but honestly I hate the “magic school” trope in fantasy so I’m utilizing these recommendations as books to avoid 🤣 So thank you for the warnings/recommendations!

I used to while away the hours with that book ... but that's also what got my hackles up with JK.... it was like she had stolen the creatures from my book!! i knew all the intricate details of her so called house elves and their origins. everyone else just THOUGHT they knew!
(yes... i am a snob. i own it.)
and while i might have forgiven her and fell head over boots for her books, she's the only one. i wanted to find something in the same category to keep the vibe going. and there's nothing.
it's all just coattail riding. OR it takes itself too seriously. Worst Witch was finally made into a tv series on netflix and that was just adorable. but .... i really have no desire to go "back to school"..... i want the world. I want something like Labyrinth or the Lion the Witch and Wardrobe (also a liberty taker, but he's allowed, literally building the origin for all of these creatures on their own planet.)
ah well... thank you for trying, but i will continue on my way.
just what i was looking for! omg
I know you meant this as a recommendation video... but honestly I hate the “magic school” trope in fantasy so I’m utilizing these recommendations as books to avoid 🤣
So thank you for the warnings/recommendations!
What about 'the deadly education' book?
