I think Rothfuss said in the last comic-con that the first triolgy is just the prequel to a bigger series. Which makes sense , I can't possibly see how can the third book successfully close all the storylines and events that are hyped up in the first two books.
So..based on that , I think it's reasonable to say that humans will achieve interstellar travel before this series is finished

    • @berserker8884

Yepkarma I honestly think that he is writing more than just the third book. Possibly he is already writing a whole new trilogy and he will have writtien almost all three books when the book three releases, just as he had already written all three of kingkiller before he even released the name of the wind.

In my mind, it's the ultimate pay off fantasy series.
After reading Malazan book of the fallen, sword of truth series, the black company, mistborn, last argument trilogy, and many other fantasy novels, wheel of time is, bar none, the one series where everything comes together in an epic, satisfying, tense, and complete way.
Many times there is one character who is op and their magic is the best or most powerful series. By the end of the wheel of time every type of ability or magic presented really shows off the creativity you'd expect from characters who need to master their abilities and don't just do things the way you expect. (something branderson also excels at)

This just me, but I love David Eddings. If you love witty banter, then you will love "The Belgariad". It's a 5 book series written in the 1980's. It details the story of a scullion from a farmstead and his aunt and grandfather as they are joined by a diverse group to complete an epic quest to kill a god. Obviously every one in the story are more than what they appear. To me, it is simply the best series I have ever read.

It’s not strange. They stretched out the hobbit movies so much and added so many things to it that weren’t in the book. The book is meant to be a short kids story about a hobbits journey and yet they decided to make it a film trilogy with epic battles. Anytime a movie veers so much from the source material, it’s bound to not feel as well-made.

A lot of these are also on my list, and the ones that aren’t are the ones I haven’t gotten to yet. For epic fantasy, I would recommend Jim Butcher’s Codex Alera - it’s a fusion between Roman Legions, Avatar the Last Airbender, and Starcraft. The first book is a bit slow to get going, and some might argue he loses a bit of momentum with the start of the second as well, but both end strong, and from book 3 on it’s all incredibly solid. Also, I’d consider some YA fantasy by Rick Riordan - all of his YA books, from Percy Jackson through to Trials of Apollo, are really good in their explorations of mythology. I’d recommend finding a list of when each novel came out and try to read them all in order that way - I think with the earlier series they weren’t as interconnected, but in the more recent books there are subtle nods from the series to one another, and straight up crossovers even.

Recently I've enjoyed the following series - The First Law, King Killer, Gentlemen Bastards, Demon Cycle, Left Hand of God ... all cracking reads in their own right, but for proper, high epic fantasy, the old stuff is still where it's at!

Being a fan of Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire and Sanderson's Stormlight Archive you should read Steven Erikson's Malazan Book of the Fallen.
The cast of characters, events, magic, and world building so massive as to make epic not seem like a good enough word to cover it.
It's got one of the most unique magic systems ever. Castle Intrigue, and enormous battles.
About the only thing it doesn't have is a university.

I’ve always wanted to read huge fantasy books, and experience something deeper than TV or video games. I strive to be enthralled inside of a story that I can hold in my hands. I bought The Name of the Wind, and it came in yesterday. I’m kind of scared to start it... But now, your video has inspired me to face it head on, and dive in head first. Just in this video, I believe you’ve helped me start my journey in the fantasy world, and reading in general! Thank you!

      @Alejojojo6 5 лет назад +1

The Silmarilion is one of my favourite books of all time. Im surprised not too see it on the list and i've read most of the books that she mentioned. To be honest, tolkien works are above Game of Thrones saga (outstanding politics but too much mirrowing the history of england in my opinion and lacks a bit of creativity) and Harry Potter (this one was my favourite as a Kid and the reason i started reading but i realised as an adult all the flaws it has). The Magician is awfull couldnt even finish it. Sanderson books and sagas are very original and give fresh air to the genre indeed but although his books are good and i recomend them, he's no match for Tolkiens level in my opinion.
The Silmarilion is the founding of the High fiction genre, and there is no book that matches it in complexity, originality and creativity. Tolkien's world is a huge piece of fine art. If i had a list it would be on my top 1. Although i understand is a very hard and complex book to read. But once you break though it you get astonished. Not even the movies do justice nor match the silmarilion.

My suggestion for an author to check out is Robert E. Howard. I know people are going to say it's not "high fantasy, but I would call it "epic". And there is more to it than just Conan, even though the Conan story Queen of the Black Coast is one of the most fascinating stories a person can read. HIs Kull stories are introspective. HIs horror stories are creepy and action-packed. Howard is definitely worth a shot.

Yeah, John Carter is a world all it's own. But I would tend to agree with you that it's mostly fantasy with a dash of old-school sci-fi. Definitely worth reading! Burroughs, like Howard, tends to get judged by adaptations to their characters, not by the actual works they made. Burroughs is high adventure at it's finest. His stories will suck you in and you won't wish to stop reading until the end. Great recommendation, Duo Gemstone!

It does take a lot of time getting used to. You are thrown into a world, with no knowledge about it, and none of the POV characters explain things they already know. And it changes POV a lot. Read the first 6, and only at like the 4th book did the magic system start to get explained a bit more.
But damn that world building in those books. Easily the largest, most comprehensive world building in any series.

As a person in my mid 60's i found your take fascinating. One of the main structures of most fantasy stories is that you need to know where you have been in order to know where you are going. To that end i would instruct you to delve much deeper, as your picks are current and barely skim the surface that is the ocean of fantasy. While Gilgamesh and the Odyssey are some early "fantasy" i would posit Plato as the forefather of fantasy with his stories about Atlantis...though one can consider all of these a form of truth.William Morris-The Well at the Worlds EndGeorge MacDonald - PhantastesLord Dunsany - Over the Hills and Far Away(anything really)Fritz Leiber - Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser storiesER Eddison -The Worm Ouroboros(there's a thick one for you)Evangeline Walton' - The Island of the Mighty (your list of great women authors is quite lacking)
Ursula K. Le Guin - A Wizard of EarthseaPeter S Beagle - The Last UnicornFred Saberhagen - The Book of Swords and Lost Swords series

Interesting, cos his wife was his editor, and you would think she would say something.
