can you do More country Mixing
I've gotten to the point where basic RUclips tutorials don't really teach me much anymore so I started watching professionals at work. This guy is obviously a legend, but on top of that by just comparing/contrasting his approach and workflow he is a cut above so many others. I wrote down his name (a little ashamed of not already knowing it) and I'll be looking heavily into his work. These MixCon classes are freaking awesome.
He's not only a great mixer, he's a great communicator with a very cool approach and philosophy in his mixing.
Jimmy is an incredible engineer and one of the most humble music behind the velvet rope stars you will ever meet. I was blessed to spend some time interviewing him for a magazine I owned/ published years ago.
ok, this might be the most impressive, straight to the point, pro mixing video i've seen.
his ideas are like a laser beam going from his mind and materialize in the computer.
I was blessed to work with Jimmy down in Miami at The Hit Factory for almost a year back in 02-03. Great guy! I’ll never forget when he brought me into Studio F To hear a very rare Missy 5.1 surround mix. He’s full of experience, knowledge and wisdom. Thanks for sharing this!
Mr Jimmy Douglass is one of the greatest and yet so humble! Much thanks!
This guy has a good vibe, he’d be part of the fam for sure. Much love and thanks for the insight Jimmy!
Watching yet another legend do what he does, amazing. Thanks to Jimmy, Justin & SonicScoop for putting these together! Peace, Love + Positive Vibes. =)
Those harmonies were serious! On some Judith Hill type. WOW. Love your process. Just simple / subtle move. You're a Sen sei mr. Douglass.
*dry dry dry in your face* Instant hit!. Great masterclass, thanks!
Thanks man... This was great...
Haircut always on point!
Video presentations and contents always straight to the points! Was pleasant to watch.
Great job for ya'll. Thanks!
hmmm, I gotta say, I love Jimmy and I really admire his history of works, HOWEVER...there are a couple of things in this video that makes me go "oh lordylordy!"...one example is at 10:43 where he talks about the bass. He says he added a compressor at the end of the chain to bring it all together. Well..that compressor has the sidechain On but with No input. That means the compressor does nothing, but still he says he can tell a difference ;) lol. But okay, he is just a human like everyone else..sometimes we get tricked ;) You all know how it is..we gotta critique everything here on the internet! hehe!.Great video anyways with a lot of great tricks, tips and insight! Inspiring :) Thank you very much to both SS and Jimmy :)
Good point! And eyes too, for catching this one! Meh... stuff like this makes me go facepalm. At least what he says when listening to... the lack of action of that compressor... is actually correct and pretty common way to use a compressor, especially with fast and/or funky bass lines. The peak:average level ratio without heavy compression tends to be huge.
Kinda hard to believe, i mean I never make mistakes either.
I lost count of how many times I went ahead and equalized my ass off on an bypassed equalizer.. my head did the transformation work, because I knew what change I was expecting, my head simply "put it there". Long story short.. in the end I usually realize the Equalizer is bypassed... fun fact: If I switch it ON the changes I made are usually pretty much exactly what I intended to do. It's the weirdest thing. I'm willing to bet that the compressor would do great work if he unchecked the sidechain.
Experience tells you what sounds good, but it also *tells* you what sounds good
I do this with students sometimes. I sit there EQing and compressing, twiddling knobs etc, and looking at them and nodding and saying "Yeh!! Booom! Check this!!! Oh yeh!" Pulling the bass face. But I am doing nothing. In bypass. They are all nodding and saying "Yeh man, that's it! Killer! Dope!" I say "Mix with your ears. Close your eyes!" Point made.
That was fun to watch! So much knowledge in there.
"If it ain´t fun why you´re doing it?" stuck with me the most, as i am overthinking things so much and getting frustrated often.
So thanks for the entertaining ans insightful walk through! 😃
Jimmy is one of my favorite people in the music bizz. It was great to see his MWTM episode with the Justin Timberlake song as well!
It's nice to watch/hear perfect ears do the thing ✌️
The legend Jimmy Douglass
Jimmy is that dude. Awesome at what he does. 💯
Thanks Jimmy. Appreciate your time. Learned something today for sure. I like the trinket loop you added. Also, thank you SonicScoop. I love MixCon.
Great times being able to see the greats processes.
God, this man is wonderful. Really good teacher.
I've been seeing Senator Jimmy D's name on Timbalands productions for years. I got the chance to see him face to face at a Red Lobster in Garden Grove California with a beautiful lady that night. And actually it wasn't face to face because I'm 5' 7" and he's like 6' 5" lmao. Anyways! He's one of my favorite audio engineers. And I love his work.
I like that he has a favourite shirt for ableton and another for pro tools
Loved this
Great charisma and presentation style.
Great stuff. Love to hear Jimmy describe what he's hearing and thinking as he approaches the mix.
Such a great video. Thanks Jimmy Douglas for sharing your experience!
That 119 move is so genius. And actually only works with the stuff he added
"IS THAT AN ONION?" Is my new shit while mixing. 😂😂😂
Amazing work, thanks for the insights, I learned a little bit.
Keep the well work up.
Absolute Genius!
Nice use of the abletunes production template

Jimmy is really cool! And seems genuinely nice!

Nice!
What a great video. Tons of gems.
Agreed!
Jimmy is a great guy brother
So much great advice in this vid!
lol that compressor in sidechain mode ...
Awesome job! Thanks for the invaluable insights
Yeah, freakin' awesome!! Thank you so much!! 😍👏
AGREED! Thanks for checking it out.
I love what he did to the kick and bass in pro tools. But I gotta say this bettermaker limiter is more than a limiter to my ears. It's taking sounds, saturating them, widening and making them louder all at the same time. I have to work harder to get the results the bettermaker simply delivers. Also another thing to take away from this is: "If it isn't fun, why are you doing it?" I do a lot of things for other reasons than fun and I think that's valid, but when it comes to sounddesign this sounds like very solid advice!
Awesome 👏 thank you so much 😊
such a great guy
Jimmy Douglas sounds like he was introduced to this session around the same time we did. Great Guy best this tutorial sounds very impromptu. Lol
Bravo!!!!
Jimmy is dope. His Passive but all the way effective approach is really dope. Looks like he's not even working
awesome teaching
Excellent.
The mix in ableton is good so a solid foundation to work with.
gracias !
and I felt bad for mixing stereo bass track with added mono subbas. Sounds nice though, I love it
The pops and clicks at the beginning and ending of the bass playing were driving me nuts when it was in solo. I would have had to put fade in and fade outs on the bass track or clean it up somehow. It didn't seem to poke out as much in the mix but it did add some noise. Guess it's just my CDO. What's CDO? OCD, put in alphabetical order! That Bettermaker sounds nice!
Boogie 'oogie 'oogie
9:43 best part :)
Cool 😎 MoFo 🙏🏾🔥🙏🏾
Love this track. Really well put together. Mostly stock ableton stuff too (during the production stage)
LOL, "That's What She Said!" @40:53
enjoyed this thanks
Wtf the bettermaker on/off 😱
"The Mix Raw That Came From The Other DAW" Bard Bars 20:42 - 20:46
where is the tutorial full mix please
👍🏾💯🔥
The EXIT door is blocked. Looks like he's trapped in there.
🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
I noticed the Melodyne sweetness... am I crazy too? :D
is this Booker T`5times 5times 5times 5times 5times Grammy winner brother?😮
brasil na cola
Im not gunna lie, this mf funny af without even trying. He a legend tho
What neves was he using as master?
Great job but seriously... can anyone show Jimmy Douglass the wonders of keyboard shortcuts?
Maybe he's not in a hurry, and he still reached to the very top of the game ;)
I can't hear what the Ozone is doing.
Nice to see and thanks for sharing.
One thing I wonder why the producer didn't do is cleaning up the bass, all those double notes sounds … not so nice. Almost as if they didn't hear this issue when doing the remix.
But nice bass sound from Jimmy.
And the curious should listen to Depeche Mode Waiting for the Night, especially the outro. : )
I like the talkback mic he's using. This is the Dirty Projectors? WTF happened to them? They used to be one of the coolest live bands around...
IMO they were one of the greatest circa 2009 and are just great now, but this is a remix and not that representative of their modern work
It’s a dance remix. The original version is more unconventional, like you’d expect from them: ruclips.net/video/HtAcgEtY_CM/видео.html
What's jimmy been smoking then?
36:17 =D
Justin needs to get in the gym, work on chest only and buy a tighter T Shirt... right now!
Lol, my chest is like the most overdeveloped part of my body. Too much incline bench :-) You're right though, that is a badly fitting t-shirt.
My peak before all the gyms closed was benching 225 at a bodyweight of 150 which is not too bad. But I try not to flaunt the goods too much. I'm going for the Ned Flanders aesthetic here: Ill fitting shirts hiding the solid rock that lurks beneath. X-D

Jimmy is absolutely wonderful but this isn’t even music. Listening to sound like this for too long will kill your soul. This is emotionless drivel. It’s daytime dad dance. Fake. Meaningless. Nonsense.
Dude, we're not here to talk about the song, we are here to learn about engineering music, how to do things right inside a mix and just a friendly reminder: everything you hear is music or sound.
Neat advice from me: just don't watch the video.
nice one m8 !
Great work and cool guy! Thank's!
