There's no way on earth anyone will get me to call Ray Cooper the greatest percussionist in the history of Rock 'n' Roll. The ONLY Percussionist in Rock ''n' Roll? ABSOL-F'N-LUTELY!!!. 🥸😈🤘🤟
In 1974 I watched Ray Cooper perform with Elton John at the Auditorium Theater in Chicago, a venue known for outstanding acoustics. At the time, I didn't really know much about Ray Cooper, in fact, for some reason I recall not really that much. Just Elton on piano with a percussionist. We did have terrific fourth-row seats right in front of the grand piano, and Ray's outfit set up next to him at stage left. Then the show started and wow did my impression change! I was completely blown away by Ray Cooper's playing along with his showmanship. It was truly mesmerizing. Reflecting on that show now, I can honestly say, that performance was one of my favorite concert experiences. And now as I read these posts from others who witnessed that show back now a half-century ago, it is very cool to share that experience.
Ray plays the tambourine as if it's an entire orchestra. Check out the way he's waving his hand to manipulate the decay @00:20 , adding an extra beat! He's the G.O.A.T.
Brilliant! Many years ago, I attended an Elton John concert at what was once the Universal Amphitheater. The first set was solo Elton - bouncing between 2 pianos on opposite stage ends. The second set opened with the raising of the Yellow Brick Road - and there was Ray playing with Elton. It was (Captain) Fantastic!
Nice! Thanks to my brother for linking me here. My first concert (at seven years old) was EJ on the Blue Moves Tour. We had kind of lousy seats, but we had a commanding view of Ray, which made a big impression. Ray hasn't aged since then...haha!
Even in the studio, he plays it as if off to his right, there's a short, fat guy in really loud clothes, fancy glasses, and a big toupee, who is singing and playing the hell out of a piano.
It was interesting to see at Elton's Glastonbury gig the composition of his band: Elton on piano (obvs) another keyboardist, guitar, bass, and then a drummer and two percussionists. Percussion is clearly very important to Elton. A mark of the man is also how he's kept as many original members as possible since the late 60s. Such a rich, colourful sound despite only a few players compared with the entourage that his contemporaries have these days. Clapton seems to have about 20 people on stage! I must admit that I was super impressed and surprised at the lush musicality in that final gig. I'm ashamed to say that I underestimated Elton's live performances. Shame it was his last on these shores!
Only guy I know that could do a whole concert with a tambourine. 👋🏻
Nobody plays percussion like Ray Cooper.
And nobody ever will
Truly the greatest percussionist and showman. Saw him do a 10 minute duck call solo with Elton John in '74. Unforgettable!
@@TechAngelx There's an instrument that sounds like a Duck.

Phenomenal. Anyone who says, "Anyone can play the tambourine" hasn't witnessed the genius of Ray Cooper.
He's extremely talented.

Ray is a top percussionist. I recently saw him playing at an Elton John concert and I was blown away by his sheer talent.
I'm always a fan since I have seen him at Eric Clapton's Unplugged Concert.
I remember very dearly when he played wonderful percussion solo in 1990
Brilliant! THAT is so difficult to play that cleanly!. Salute to you Ray. Blessings, Carl. - (*student of John Kasica with the St. Louis Symphony)
This video should be seen by anyone who thinks the tambourine isn't a true musical instrument. (And I've met my share.)
