Nice one again, Matt. Peter's absolutely right about the importance of t 0.1 flash times for dance photography. That's the most important reason why I use Broncolor as well. That said, I just started using my new daylight studio, which opens totally different possibilities of shooting. What a wonderful job we have 😎.

great interview Matt, Asked great questions. Always thought expensive lights were just more reliable for strobinig and tempeture and were too overpriced for hobby photographers, I never heard anyone mention that the cheaper lights dont "stop or cut out" fast enough. Never seen that issue on any of my own shots and I'm a godox user. But its something I'm going to be watching out for now and I've learned something new.

Same here for flashes, if you work in manual you can almost always manage any brand setup with your Leicas, wired or wireless.
Me too! I like to decide the brightness of the image rather than the camera deciding
Great chat! I had gone from shooting model with two AD600 and one AD200 (with ND to shoot below HSS) to using VL300, VL150 and LD150R (indoor); as you mentioned, it works better with a film and digital workflow. The organic flow shooting with M bodies is something so sublime that I have yet to reintroduced strobe back into my on location shoot, but the M240 sensor's lack of dynamic range really can use some help outdoor; it is a hard decision to make reintroducing strobe on this Leica journey.
Thanks! Nice light setup you have! I use 60W lights currently and can use batteries for location shoots. Sokani and Sirui brands. See the video if you want a portable lower light location solution. I might get a higher power one for bigger light mods. (and yes the M240 has limited DR!)
Thanks for the suggestion! I have a cheap 20W unit that has ARGB and built in effect that runs on Sony NP mostly use for hair light when I travel. But if I set it to above 70%, the lamp would overhead and shut off after about 15-20 minutes. Thus I need an alternative solution
It was absolute gold when Peter mentioned that Leica’s sensor was not up there with the rest, you could of been knocked over with a feather. Great content though.

Hi guys. You said that you pull the camera towards you to shift the focus from the eyes to the forehead? Do you need to move the camera itself or move the focus ring in manual mode? And another question, when Peter shoots a Hasselblad in studio, does he use auto focus on the center point? (Or manual) I have not seen him pull the camera towards him (because it is often on a tripod)
Hi, try not to overthink it.. you just need to move the focus off the eyes in the example so you can hold the camera and just lean back, move the camera backwards, or turn the focus ring (say if on a tripod).. or just focus on the forehead and move nothing
Matt I think it’s time for a long term review of the SL. Has your opinions changed/compare to new lenses or new cameras/things you’ve learned.

After shooting side-by-side, can you see any justification for the SL2-S over the SL(601) given they are both 24MP and you and Peter both shoot fully manual? Only advantage I can think of is maybe IBIS.

Thanks, as mentioned I think it’s the v3 version. I tested it over a few days so look out for a full video (I’ll check the spec for that)
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Thanks. Peter C mentioned it was a 1963 lens so that would make it a v1, with #11308 having 16 ap blades..Made between 1958-1969. Sn 1xxxxxx. There is also 11308 1971-79 black only with 10 ap blades. Canada VII filters and Wetzlar e39 filters. Anything ring bell with yours?

When I use modern sharp lenses for portraits, I end up using a stretched black panty hose across the lens to soften the image. That is why I prefer to also use vintage lenses.
Yes that's why I tend to use vintage lenses too :) ..or mist filter
Used SL seems the best choice for me if you're not a video shooter.

I have only 2 lenses. 28-50. But if I could only have 3 I would have 28-50-90 because sometimes I like to take photos of birds. Also it’s a nice perspective.
95% of the time I’m on the 50mm. Summicron v5 is my lens. Perfect for me. Don’t want anything else.

No Q3 after a month, I am reconsidering the purchase. I have a Canon R6ii and think that the R1 will cost about the same
as a Q3 which is $6,000. I have the big Canon fast 28-70 F2 (fastest zoom ever made for full frame) and the
R1 will fix rolling shutter and I will get 47mp with no crop at F2.0 from 28-70mm. A one lens kit.
Hmm, yes I hear you. I know the 28-70 f2.. it's a monster lens! I saw it at a wedding once.

And its such a superior optic it just works without changing lenses.

Random and probably useless question -- Has Peter ever tried the new Q3 28mm and where could he see using that?
I think no but he uses different lenses for different "looks", the same as me, so 1 fixed lens camera doesn't tick that box
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom Me neither historically. I shoot the Sony A7R world with Tamron and Sony lenses for at least 10 years+ when Sony only had a 35, a 50 1.8, 70-200 f4 and a few G lenses to today with amazing sharp and bright lenses to chose from. But I have to say -- getting a Q3 is a new experience to make life easy and practice simplicity and art again in a new light. Dont say no until you try -- may sharpen your artistic skills.
I have avoided the 75 f/1.4 due to it being an obsolete design that sells for what I deemed too much money for the performance. However, I keep hearing everyone praise how it is their favorite lens to the point I will have to try one if given the opportunity. As for sharpness. I see a difference between Leica and native Fuji or Sony glass. I have a feeling that Fuji/Sony is adding some digital sharpening. The Leica lenses are sharp, but they look more natural with less artifacts. Many will tell me I have lost it and that's ok, but I have a feeling Fuji/Sony and perhaps others are doing some digital enhancement to their advantage and upon close inspect it doesn't look completely natural.
Thanks, yes with modern lenses the profiles definitely alter the look (often correcting distortion etc) (say the Sigma L mount lenses). Yes the 75 1.4 is tempting..I wish it was cheaper!
@@MattOsborne-MrLeicaCom This is not distortion correction. I am familiar with the corrections either in the RAW file or from a profile in post processing software. It looks like some kind of edge sharpening being applied to try to swing things in their favor. Like I said maybe I am crazy and it's not anything they are doing, but how Leica designs lenses or maybe I think I see something that just isn't there.
@@sebastiang7183Does Leica design lenses? Especially under the L bayonet and system SL, SL2, SL2-S which are exactly similar visually, constructively and optically to Sigma and Panasonic/Lumix. Unfortunately, the former glory and the famous German quality from the Leica brand in the field of designing and manufacturing top-level optical products have passed.
@@jonassekondi931 Are you saying that Leica does not design lenses? Leica historically has both calculated and manufactured lenses, but also purchased existing lens calculations and rebranded them under Leica.

Putting vaseline on a lens is bull shit.
For a softer look we put a Zeiss Softar on the Hasselblad lenses.
Sometines I replaced the Zeiss lens by a Rodenstock Imagon or a Berthiot Eidoscope.
Haha thanks Jaco, you are old enough to know that Vaseline was common practice for those that didn't have a Softar filter.
Used stockings, not pantyhose, diffusion filter and copied the Zeiss softar..used drops of glue..dried of course!
About the Sony colours Cam Mackey had something important to say. He once had a Sony and switched back to Canon again, but has now made a switch to the FX-3 and A7RV again after he discovered the secret in the colours was in the curves of postprocessing.

I was bored! No images! Al that wonderful chat, wasted! Best part, Sony has no soul?! It's an image. In film days (I'm still there) My older Leitz lenses had a certain look! Softer contrast. My Nikkors had way more contrast, looked sharper.. Sony menu? I have a Minolta that I love, CCD and the menu. Why in Fluff did Sony keep it? WHY! never figgered mine out.

Actually, to semi-correct Peter, the latest Leica M11 sensor is the 3rd highest rated sensor currently: (1) Hasselblad X1D-50c (2) Pentax 645z (3) Leica M11.
But yes, the other Leica sensors are much lower in rank. All falling behind most top tier Sony, Nikon, and Canon.

Sensors for the Q, Q2, SL, SL2 and SL2-S are made by STMicroelectronics in Grenoble. The sensors for the M11 and Q3 are actually Sony sensors where Leica modifies the micro lenses array on top of the sensor. These sensors can also be found in the 26MP Fuji X cameras (albeit in a different size and with a different color array filter), the Sony A7RIV and V and the Fuji GFX100(S) and Hasselblad X2D (also different size). However, the sensor is only part of the story. Most of the actual ‘looks’ is determined by the processor and specifically the software in camera. Not only for jpeg, but also for raw files. Hence the differences between the brands.

Enthusiasm tempered by price. The good Voitlander lenses are almost as unaffordable as Leica Lenses. I think the Panasonic Lumix S5 platform is the affordable future, but I simply flat out refuse to consider paying $5000 for a Leica lens for it. The Leica/Lumix 85mm f1.8 at $1100 with almost no discernable difference in image quality in tests seems much more sensible. And as Peter Coulson says, all his shots are at f5.6 or f8, so whats the point? I like his images, but honestly, they are not any more gallery quality than say Alberto Luis Serra who shoots with a D750 and a Nikon 85 f.8 D.
Yes at f5.6 you can use a £50 lens with no issues.
All this talk of gear... you could just get a 6D with 50mm 1.8 stm and no one would notice :)

Leica is for rich guys who need expensive toys to show their friends.
Leica is not for sensible photographers.
Fortunately, there are different niche segments, with different price ranges in the product lines from Leica.
You might have overlooked that you can buy used Leica bodies for less than some Sony, Nikon, Canon. You just need to pick wisely. I save money in other areas so to buy the used Leica bodies I want. No TV, no house, no drinking, no smoking.. sounds boring but I enjoy my Leica cameras.
Exactly, yes you can spend silly money on Leica stuff but you don't need to. I certainly don't.
