I Threw My Dead Carp Back In The Creek. Next Minute...

- I went fishing in a small hidden little creek a few days ago. I first discovered this spot while exploring with my daughter Holly last summer. Despite having a lot of carp in this fishing spot, in the 3 times that I have fished here I have never had a fishing trip where I catch carp only.

G'day Robbie. Interesting to read the directive from the Victorian Gov that Carp must NOT be returned to the water alive. NSW DPI does NOT stipulate that it is illegal to return Carp alive, to the water where they were caught. Personally, I never return them to the water alive, believing that they are noxious pests that negatively impact our native species.
@@neilcondron8315 TBF to the carp, the Boolara Strain we have here were hybridised in Victoria to suit Australian conditions, released deliberately into many places to provide some fish through the late 60s and 70s when the natives were so depleted through overfishing and mismanagement of the habitat they were all but extinct, and have naturalised in those regions. THey only became a problem to many people in the 80s when natives started being restocked after breeding breakthroughs.
As for the negative impact on natives, I do not see many. The bigger natives eat them, the natives would have a small food supply if you wiped out carp and redfin without replacing them with something. Trout have a bigger impact on smelt, galaxia and gudgeons, but again, we can look at pollution, mismanagement and clearing for more problems than trout create.
Blamed for creating silted up and clouded water, yet live in clear water. In the same lake it can be clear one day, clouded the next. The carp numbers are the same both days, the wind and flow stirs up the mud, the carp get blamed. Why not?
Any way, I am not advocating carp are spread around, I am not saying they are a wonderful addition to the waters, but they were deliberately developed and introduced to fill a niche when we needed it filled and I think it is highly unfair to demonise them and blame them for many issue we create, not them. A bank collapses? Blame the carp, not the fact there is no riparian vegetation holding the bank together. No natives in a place? Blame the carp, not the removal of the logs for clear water flow and usage. Cloudy water and algal blooms? Must surely be the carp, not fertilisers and other run off.
@@neilcondron8315 It is illegal to return a live carp to any waterway in Australia, and has been for a long time........
Hey mate, I it is illegal in Victoria to release live carp, but not dead carp. In NSW you can release live carp if you wish to.
@@MickH60 That is not correct Mick. Have a look at the NSW DPI site.
Farmers appear because some people don’t respect our farms. We had someone light a fire on a total fire ban day and littered the ground with a carton of beer cans. We put up with a lot from the public sometimes.Good to see you respect the land your fishing on.
Thanks mate. Yes, there really are some dead set dropkicks around. I'm so thankful to have so many farmers that let me onto their private properties. Many of my videos are filmed either on private property, or on water that I am fortunate enough to access through private property.
People don’t respect themselves these days unfortunately. 😢
We had someone dump and old car in the creek that runs along our fence line now I’m always flying across the paddock in the paddock bomb to see what people are up to
We used to have people ride their horses on our land. Until we were warned that under public liability rules WE were liable if they fell off their own horse on our place. Laws and, but more importantly, CIVIL courts are an incredible problem that impedes freedoms and liberties.
Love these videos. I’m originally from England (35 years ago) but my Australian wife’s grandad used to take me, family and friends on fishing trips along the Moonie river in QLD. I’d pick him and his trailer up in Crows Nest and drive where he told me to go. We would drive along long country roads with no discernible tracks and he would just say turn right at that tree. I would turn in, drive through the bush to a clearing that had clearly been used forever by fishermen. There would be bbq tools hanging from trees, fire wood piles etc. He also took us to remote private land where he knew owner. We would camp for 4 or 5 days and always caught a good amount of fish. Unfortunately he passed a few years ago now and non of us remember the secret spots or know the land owners. It’s such a shame as I would love to take my Aussie son and show him those remote parts of the real Australia.
Thanks mate, it sounds like you have a lot of happy memories. 👍👍
A great story of a memorable time spent with him Tom. A real shame that your son can't share those experiences but I'm sure you will provide him with opportunities to see the real Australia... It is fantastic. Cheers mate.
Another informative video Robbie, it’s great to see the Native Animals, getting a feed of the feral pests instead of the other way round. Good stuff mate! 👍🏼👍🏼
Thanks Kev, I agree. 👍👍
Thanks Robbie , enjoy watching the fishing late in the afternoon as the sun goes down ! Very lucky to have great spots nearby even if you don’t get a larger cod . Keep ‘em coming ! 👍👍🍻🍻
Thanks so much mate. 👍
Rakali. Great little fellas. Good to see him get lunch.
Thanks Andy. I still think that you have the best Rakali footage. The Clio where it tried to steal your redfin. Haha
@@robbiefishing It DID steal the redfin. "There is no try, there is do or do not..." and he did. 😆 Not sure if I like that one or the one that the rakali raided my bread bag and wouldn't take no for an answer most. Both just show how persistent they can be when there is a feed on the line! 😅
Nice fishing session Robbie. I couldn't believe how well that Rakali swam with that carp in it's gob, very cool.👍 😂
Thanks mate. I've had them eat dead carp near me, but that's the first time I've seen one swim off with the carp. Haha
I love the Carp fishing too, gets them out of the waterways and are fun to catch. Nice spot there Robbie.
Thanks!
Thank you so much mate. 🙏
Great to watch as always thanks Mate.
Wishing you and your Family a very Happy New Year Ahead Robbie.
God Bless.
Cheers.
Rob.
Thank you so much Rob. Happy New Year to you and your family too mate. 👍🙏
By the way mate you fish my haunts and watching you takes me back to my adventures..
A cod is a cod!
lol I've not seen one that small outside of aquariums, what a beauty
Haha thanks mate. 👍👍
Loved that segment about the water rats ar 10:50. Interesting and the punch line on Holly was gold! 😂
Haha thanks so much mate.
That was an awesome episode, never fail.
Best on RUclips by far
Aussie Aussie Aussie
Hi mate, thank you so much for your very kind words. 👍👍
The Rakali apeared otter-like when it grabbed the carp and dipped under the water.
Great entertaining video, mate.
Thanks so much mate. One of their other names is actually Australian Otter.
Well explained Rob, info like that is what it's all about!!!
Thanks so much mate. 👍
Opposite way around, mate. Convex is rounded, concave is dipped 😂
Haha someone else noticed that too. LOL I didn't even notice when I edited, or proof watched. Haha 🤣
Sounds like an IQ issue to me lol 😂
@robbiefishing and Hungry Jack's, life doesn't get much better than that 😂😂😂
Haha thanks mate. It was great chatting to you last night. 👍👍
@robbiefishing it was a good night
Blo ripper Robbie mate
@@cointector Thanks Camels. 👍👍
Bloody ripper haaa
Carp are the most popular fish here in the uk , and the carp fishing scene is quite a big industry , carp gear is the main revenue for tackle shops .
I've eaten carp in Austria. It is very nice prepared properly (left to swim in clean water for a couple of weeks) then cooked as Serbischer Karpfen - filleted and pan fried in garlic butter.
How would bother goito that amount of effort to eat a carp
@oliewray8357 carp is the most commonly eaten fish in the world, so much guess is that a lot of people would bother.
Ya don't need to go to that much trouble , the carp just need to be covered with ice straight away (A rather big amount) to stop it from releasing an enzyme throughout it's body. I've eaten carp and it wasn't that bad but still it's not really worth the effort IMHO.
Epic feed for the water rat 🙂 how cool was that little cod! That was awesome 😁 now that I've caught up on the vids, I hope you and the family had a great Christmas and an even better New Year. Cheers Robbie! 😁🍻
Thanks so much mate. I hope you've had an awesome Christmas and Happy New Year too.
City slicker here enjoying some magnificent freshwater fishing good job mate!
Hi Frank, thank you so much for your kind words. 👍
Thanks mate for explaining the difference between Murray cod n trout cod I hope I can remember all that I don’t have the best memory
Mate what an awesome way to spend a day. I've fished lakes for decades, I had no idea you could get Redfin (one of my favs) in creeks like that
Thanks mate. 👍👍
Great video Robbie I always fish at my local wetlands and always see the carp swimming and jumping is good fun then throw them back after killed so they don’t smell for the next person
Spot on mate, that's what I do. 👍👍
nice interaction with that Ricarly mate, awesome
Thanks Dmac, they really are such awesome creatures aren't they.
Another great video Robbie! I hope that you have a wonderful year mate! Cheers 👍
Thanks so much Aaron. I hope that you have a great new year too. 👍👍
The good news, still a spot you've caught something other than Carp each session. Very nice afternoon session and a good feed for that water rat and its family. Great job once again Robbie and Happy New Year to you and the Alexander family :)
Thanks so much Larry. Happy New Year to you and your family too mate. 👍👍
I too thought I was wrong once, but I was mistaken. 👍👊🇺🇸🤘 from northern Michigan.
Also, your water-rat looked similar to our (USA) muskrat.
@given0fox968 Awesome, I must look them up. These are sometimes called Australian Otters. Haha
Happy New Year, Robbie. Hope you're taking care of that back.
Thanks so much mate. Happy New Year to you too.
1:02 good man the amount of fishermen who don't wet their hands before handling fish (catch & release)
Thanks mate. I try to wet my hands wherever I can. I'm almost 50 and overweight so in some places it just isn't possible, but wherever I can I always wet my hands.
Cool video mate! Im originally from Adelaide and old enough to remember when Carp started taking over, very sad but it is what it is. Andre
Thanks Andre. So is my Dad. He remembers fishing in the pre-carp days. I have the same attitude as you. It's very sad, but it is what it is.
Like to wish you and your family a Happy and Healthy 2025 Robbie. I will look forward to what you have on offer during this year. Cheers.
Thank you so much Neil. Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you too mate. 👍👍

That small cod would be killer in a tank or a pond hey any ways keep up the good work champ been watching ya now on here for years much respect from me and the family
Thank you so much mate.
Rakali , I never heard of them, Amazing how he would be totally aware of you, because of the talking and moving about, but he knew you were not a threat.
As bold as, or bolder, than a NSW Railway rat.
Haha so true. They really are such cool creatures.
Robbie that would have to be the most prepared I have seen you for a fishing session in a while you had a bucket on rope, machete, net and rod holder 😂
Hahaha thanks mate. Maybe my memory is getting better with age? LOL 😅😅
That was sick to watch mate never seen them swim off with the fish before and what a monster cod didn’t even know they came that big cheers Robbie
Haha thanks so much mate. What a monster. LOL 🤣🤣
Happy new year buddy ,hope you had a great time over the break glad to see u having a good arvo cheers from grumpy
Thanks so much Grumpy, Happy New Year to you too mate. I hope you're having a great break. 👍👍

Haha thanks mate, so was I. LOL 😅😅

Good one mate 👍👍👍👍👍
Thanks Cam. 👍👍
G’day Robbie. Great video mate, and that rat swimming off with that carp was unreal, lol. That Murray Cod was tiny, great catch.
Thanks mate. Haha I love watching our amazing Aussie wildlife.
Ohh no did you release a carp...hahaha
Haha did you see the can of worms that I opened on my Facebook page? LOL 😂😂
Awsome footage buddy
Thanks mate.
Happy new year Robbie
Thanks mate, Happy New Year to you too.
I see Rakali all the time around Williamstown & Geelong where I often fish , they're good with salt or fresh water & you can identify them as a Rakali from the white tip at the end of their tail . They're native & also known as Rabe
Awesome, thanks mate. I never knew they went in salt water.
A day we'll spent. 😊 couldn't do anything better. 😂
Thanks Vincent, I agree. I love this type of fishing.
NICE to see that juvie cod! It shows they are BREEDING in that creek!
Also, I had the SAME thing happen to ME with a dead carp I'd caught being stolen by a rakali last year!
I had it on the bank a few M away from me, I heard some noise to see a rakali dragging it back into the water & swim off with it!
I did get some of it on video!
Haha they really are such awesome critters aren't they. LOL
@@robbiefishing Yep!
Very inquisitive as well!
I've had them come right up the bank to me!
Awesome video mate how cool where those Rakali some people would treat them as rats but they have a purpose and it’s good as they get rid of the dead carp.
Thanks mate, they sure do have their place. They're such fascinating animals.
Awesome session bro.... u shore berryl hasn't got a tail 😂😂😂😂😂
Hahaha thanks bro. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
What great footage of the Rakali. Even at 69,I lean something new most days. Today was RAKALI. Thankyou
Thanks so much for your kind feedback mate. 👍👍
hi Robbie I love watching your videos, I am wondering what hook size you run for carp or a recommendation for hook size
Thanks mate. I usually use a small hook, something around size 4 or similar.
Ripper vid robbo!
Thanks mate. 👍👍
Great Video Robbie 👍 I went to my Post Office today to post a package and they said my letter to you got sent off yesterday so its on its way.
Thanks so much mate. I will keep my eyes open for the notification from my post office. 👍👍
Just noted that the grass you were clearing was serrated tussock. High silica content in the leaves. Hard to chop away
Thanks mate, I noticed that it was very hard.
Carp are a pest in some parts, food in eastern Europe and you would have to pay to fish for them in the UK as they are a big recreational angling target hear (catch and return or big trouble) they can be even named in some waters if they get over 20+kg. Great to see fishing from around the world 👍
Thanks mate. It's amazing how different countries and different cultures view and treat carp isn't it.
Hi there i enjoy your channel.. I love the Redfin best eating of all freshwater fish. The rakali is an aboriginal name for water rat. They like bush rats are native and are clean not like the introduced rat. Keep fishing man. Keep your eyes peeled for joblakes. Bravo from Victoria..
Thanks so much mate. 👍👍
There’s a creek near my property in n.s.w (maraylya) and I thought I’ll throw a line in and see what’s in there. Caught a big bass! Was surprised.
WOW that's so cool, well done.
Love your visitor. A white tip tail ?
Yep, Rakali (water rat) have a white tip on the end of their tales.
How good was that catching fish is not just why we go fishing
I caught a Murray Cod at Tocumwal that was 2 inches long on a size 2/0 hook 🪝 😂 THE hook was nearly as big as the fish 0:44
Haha that's so funny. They're certainly hungry fish. LOL Thanks Pete. 👍👍
Nice wildlife in action!
Thanks mate. 👍👍 I get w buzz out of watching these guys do their thing.
Gday Robbie, have you considered releasing fish you catch from the high bank with your net? I feel if the net is good enough land a fish, it is suitable for releasing fish rather than pitching them back from a great height.
That tiny MC is a good sign Robbie
Thanks Mick, you're not wrong. 👍👍
that was sick 👍👍👍👍
Thanks mate. 👍👍
G'day Robbie, looks like a great place to float fish. Is that something you do at times?
Hi mate, it sure is. I love float fishing. I've done it quite a lot of times on my channel.
@ Cheers, I'll look through your vids.
Hey Robbie I was fishing yesterday with my dad at night at northern beaches and caught a 43cm yellow bellow on a spinner bait and also a little cod
WOW Eli, that's so awesome. Well done mate. I love fishing down there after dark, more so in the cooler months when there's less mozzies though. LOL 🤣

Any tips for fishing a stocked lake with Murray cod yellas and silver perch and Goulburn in Shepparton
Hi mate, I would be making sure that I'm fishing at the low light times of the day. Sunrise and sunset.
I wonder when this was made ? It has been illegal to throw carp back in the river/ waterway. (I live on the Murray and it's was a $25 on the spot fine ), yes, even dead fish are not to be returned to the river, except as " yabbie bait" in a net. Did know people that still copped the $25 fine for doing it, technically you are breaking the law returning carp - even as bait. The fish is hated that much in Australia.
Hi mate, this was filmed last week. There's a link to the laws in the pinned comment at the top for your perusal. 👍
RAKALI = i have actually seen one in Frankstone victoria in a wet area on a stream and walking on a board walk ! really quietly with a camera ! missed the shot = black and tan - actually looked a bit orange and black !
That's awesome, they're such awesome creatures.
Hi Robbie, nice video, do you think that small cod is natural recruitment or do you recon it is a stocked fish that has migrated up that creek
Hi mate, it is 100% a wild fish, naturally recruited. Murray cod are not stocked into the Ovens River catchment due to good natural recruitment.
That’s great that we have a sustainable natural population there, it shows the hard work and bag and size limits have paid off
Amazing predator the white tail rat. They even eat cane toads 😮
I’m watching your video at 5:28 exactly I’ve been at the hospital the last 8hrs only to be told I’m fluid over loaded
Hi Catherine, I'm so sorry to hear that you wound up at the hospital. I hope that you are feeling much better today. 🙏🙏
@ Yeah I’m fine they put it down to an over load of fluid took 3L off me today now I just have to watch my fluids over the weekend n were going to try taking another 3L hope all is well do you have a video tonight?
Nothing better when fishing when other animals turn up doing their thing and watching their behaviour along the waterways.
Thanks mate, I agree. I get a real kick out of watching wildlife do it's thing.
We were on rental house boat on the Darling river at Wentworth and we had a huge water rat climb on the back of boat to get the rubbish tin I guess. I scared it and jump back in the water and swam to the bank. The wife said you wouldn't want the cat to bring that home, I said most cats would be scared of it.
Haha wow that's so cool. That would be awesome to experience.
Why had not i subcribed yet? Bloody carp sit on a summers bank for a day n still flip back into the drink. Its important to kindly end em. Never put em back in or leave em. Big murry cod have benifited greatly in cusine. I catch snakes too rob.. happy new year digger.
Thanks so much mate. Happy New Year to you too. 👍👍👍
Saw one of these opposite crown casino, they look like gigantic versions so of regular rats. My missus was freaking out.
Haha there's no need to freak out. They're not actually a rat. They just look a little bit similar.
"Sometimes I call Holly a rat and she hasn't even got a tail"
Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahabahahahahahahahahaha
As always, great video! I'm glad i dont live near heaps of great fishing spots. I'd be too addicted to fishing lol.
Haha thanks mate. I definitely have that problem.
Hello Robbie guess what, the biggest Murray cod ever caught in the Murray river was 114kg 1.8m long, that’s massive
WOW What a monster. I have a feeling that it was caught in the Bawron River, a tributary of the Darling River but I could be wrong.
"Now this time I brought this machete, mainly so I can trim some of this grass down to stop my line getting caught, but also mainly to flog the f**k out of any carp I catch with it. But mainly to cut grass down also"
Hahaha that's about right. LOL 😂😂
Quick question for you mate. I am not a fisherman but someone told me that it is illegal to return a carp to the water. Is that true? I may not fish but I enjoy watching people fish. Kinda like the people that like guitars and guitar playing but can't play a note. Cheers mate.
Haha thanks mate. That's a great analogy because I'm the same. LOL 😂😂 I lov watching skilled guitarists.
The laws vary from state to state. In Victoria it's OK to throw them back as long as they are dead. In fact Victorian fisheries encourage us to do that rather than leaving them on the bank.
Hey Robbie
What are the chances of you coming out to central west nsw fishing the Lachlan river
Hi mate, very slim. LOL I would absolutely LOVE to. I love that area. I l Iove Hillston. I fished Lake Cargelligo last year. It's a beautiful part of the world but It's so far away and as much as I would love to go out there, I can't see it happening any time soon sorry.
Looks kinda like a muskrat that we have in America. My dad trapped hundreds of them in his life. They used to dig holes in people's lake front property and he would get paid good money for removal.
WOW that's amazing. Many years ago they were hunted almost to extinction here in Australia too. They were hunted for their fur.
Thankfully these days they are a protected species.
Whereabouts vis that Robbie, looks Ike Newstead area
Hi mate, no I am up in North East Victoria..
great video, ive never seen a mud rat before.
Thanks mate.
Hey, @Robbiefishing did you know some fish have teeth inside their throat? They are called pharyngeal teeth I think carp is one of them something I didn't know about until watching too many videos over the kids being on holidays
WOW I didn't know that, how fascinating.
Hey Robbie, every time I try to order Jamjack worms, they are out of stock.
Hi mate, years they've been out of stock for quite a while. Have you tried any of your local tackle stores?
Robbie can you please baitfish at the junction in Wangaratta I caught a 64 cod their today
WOW That's sensational, well done mate. I will do that for sure, but probably in the cooler months. I've filmed heaps of videos down there, it's a ripper spot isn't it.
The rakali (Hydromys chrysogaster), also known as the rabe, the "Australian Otter" or water-rat, is an Australian native rodent first scientifically described in 1804.[2] Adoption of the Ngarrindjeri name rakali is intended to foster a positive public attitude by Environment Australia.
Thanks mate, spot on. They deserve more respect than they get.
