Regarding the limit on gallery size, I think the rule is the same as if you're planning an exhibition. You really shouldn't be going above around 24 images, especially if it's on a given subject or a narrative. You have to be pretty ruthless with your images. That's why it's best to split your galleries into themed / project galleries. As ever, in the edit you've got to kill your darlings!
Hi, and thanks for all the great info! I’m new to squarespace; I’ve chosen a template, but don't understand how to delete the sample photo. Many tutorials explain how to create a new page, but don’t address this. I was expecting to just click on any section, (say a photo), delete the stock photo and upload mine in that same space, as in many graphic programs...but there’s no link to sample photo and no apparent way to delete said photo. Please help! 🙏
Yes! If you click on Help (at the bottom of the main menu in your Squarespace website (below Pages, Design, Commerce, etc), it will tell you at the bottom if you are in 7.0 or 7.1... if you just started your site, most likely you are in 7.1 :)

1st pic in the gallery should be the one you want, ie no B/G use a white box. This is a quick fix for the top pic issue
