Dartmouth Lower and Higher Ferries in May 1996

We join the Dartmouth Lower ferry at Dartmouth in May 1996. Tug boat "Hauley V" is in charge of our unpowered ferry craft for the short crossing to Kingswear. We then join the Dartmouth Higher Ferry for the return crossing to Dartmouth. At the time of filming this cable ferry (also known as the "floating bridge") was operated by 1960-built "No. 7". This vessel was powered by paddle wheels with the cross-river cables being used only to keep the ferry on course. No. 7 was withdrawn from service in 2009 to be replaced by a newly constructed ferry.
