they are so amazed because of her rare DEEP tone, unique voice. Have you ever heard something like that? Cher, Shakira may be...but no. Diana was 14-15 years old on these videos and she showed a great technique. When I hear her singing I have goosbumbs all over my body and it has nothing to do with our Russian culture

Спасибо Вам за Ваши эмоции. Это и есть самый настоящий Актёрский эстрадный вокал, причём и вокально и актёрски на самом высочайшем уровне исполненный! Ещё рекомендую посмотреть "Реченька" в Дианином исполнении. Там она шикарно использует актёрские практики.
Далее анализ.
Дикция и жестикуляция высший бал. А какая мимика, очень живое лицо. Я Диану воспринимаю не только как певицу, но и как актрису. Очень интересную со своей уникальной психофизикой. Музыка живёт у Дианы внутри, а не в мониторах. Видно как она отключается от внешнего мира в момент исполнения. Это исполнение, где есть целая история, не только пропетая, но и прожитая, весь космос в том, что она настолько глубоко погружена во внутрь, что звук становится как буд то с тобой сама природа заговорила. Ждём Диану на Евровидении))))) #Марфин
на момент исполнения этих песен Диане 14-15 лет, и судьи да, удивляются, что она такая юная, имеет не только интересный голос для своих лет, но и четко попадает во все ноты, плюс не просто поет, а вдумчиво поет. она конечно понимает о чем она поет, даже если песня не на русском языке.

Have to disagree with your mother, this is not just a cultural phenomena, this girl is World Class! The girl is aged 14 when this was recorded, aged 15 when Wicked Game was recorded. Her voice is unique, & has mastered how to use her instrument effortlessly. Her stage presence is spectacular, & it matters not where you are in the world for this girls gift of story telling through song to move you. If you were to do a little research you would find her biography reveals a difficult beginning in life for Diana. In my opinion she is 'one of a kind' & can only vaguely compare her to anyone else, I'd say she can definitely hold her own. More importantly, music is universal, it holds no barriers, no borders, perhaps reflects our similarities more than our differences.

Let's just make it clear that we, here in the United States KNOW why the crowd was impressed. We know talent despite what seems to be a hereditary anomaly shared by mother and son in this reaction.
It's not that Diana's 15, it's not her horrific experience as a child, it's not a "cultural" secret. It's proper singing in an almost impossibly unique and controlled way that we (Most of us) recognize.
The last thing I want to do is come across as some "fanboy", as I'm sure there are PLENTY of people to fill that position... I'm just amazed (and embarrassed) at this family's ignorance and their willingness to drag us all (as Americans) under the "Short-bus".
Bless your soul. I, too, was taken aback by the comments in the video. There is nothing unusual about not recognizing talent or skill; what is perplexing is the need to share that lack of understanding with the world.
When ignorance tries to rank, let us remain silent. They have eyes to see what to comment on to become popular, but they have no hearing and knowledge to determine what they hear

I don't understand the comments. Her vocal quality and technique is incredible, and it's something other singers and musicians especially notice. It takes a lot of control to produce that kind of sound, it doesn't just happen. It has nothing to do with style, setting, emotion, or Russian/French, whatever that means, although those things do add an incredible amount to the overall performance. One of the judges on the show is a world class composer, and the rest are professional singers. I think they can recognize talent, and it has nothing to do with culture.
A couple of explanations. 1st song - she was 15 y.o. 2nd song - she was 14 y.o. Derniere Danse (Last Dance) - french song (no one russian word). It was audition for tv show "You are Super". 4 judges - 2 composers, 2 pop-singers. The first judge reacted to a whisper tone (she performed at a level unattainable for her, very accurately played the notes, very accurately kept the tone). The second judge reacted to vocal technique deep voice (position sound extraction but not from nose) and mixing a deep chest voice and a high head voice (she knows the technique yodeling perfectly). 3 and 4 judges are composers - they voted for the acting and emotions that she can convey in this song.

16 years old Diana now. When she sang the second song in French ("Derniere Danse"), she was 14 years old. And she performed the first song ("Wicked Game") at the age of fifteen. Diana’s mastery grows like yeast dough. By twenty, she will be a megastar. She needs to learn English, French and Spanish langs, which she does not know at all, and then she will be ready to work around the world.

She has a one in a billion tone quality and she is a dramatic contralto which is very very rare and the rarest female vocal type and at age 14 its another story. Of course they are impressed.
Yes the judges are impressed with the power of her voice . But they are more impress with her vocal technique . The vocal runs , sides , yodels , use of vibrato and closed vowels etc are absolutely marvelous and often very subtle .

Diana is a Queen. I Love Her.
I love that y'all did this. I was exposed to Russian music through a relationship many years ago, and developed a deeper interest during my 3 semesters of studying Russian language. While you don't typically hear her style, control and range, in Russian folk music, there are more types of vocal inflections that are commonly used in Western Cultures. Whether it is her style (Southeastern Russia) or Slavic influences present in Arkona"s music
(Russian folk Metal, great band by the way, they have toured the us on a few occasions, I saw them open for Epica, and despite the language barrier, they really energized the crowd).
They are uncommon to us, but not so much in Russia, and these techniques use a full range of controls, in the larynx (dropped deeper into the throat) opening of the throat, abdominal and Nasal controls (more so in the french song, as the language is very nasal).
There is another singer who competed against Diana Ankudinova (Элеонора Симакова=Eleonora Simakova) who was very talented and used similar techniques from the slavic influences. She does not have the internet following, and is not as active, but her performance is also a good example of this kind of talent.

You will see what I mean at about the 1:25 or 1:3o mark.
The reason the judges were so excited so early on, is because the techniques are very difficult, and require a level of vocal control that is not very common, but easily recognized in traditional Russian culture . I was amazed by her tonal accuracy. So much so that after a second listen, I plugged in my guitar tuner, my jaw was in my lap when I saw hew perfect her pitch was. It was more like a finely tuned musical instrument than a voice. Most guitarists could not achieve that kind of accuracy just from the slight variations in the pressure from their fingers and the strength of their picking. Even when she sang a portion of "Dernier Dance" a cappella at the request of one of the judges after one of her performances, her pitch control was virtually perfect. Having studied French as well, I can also tell you that she has less of an accent in French than in English.
There is something else that you might find very interesting. Diana Ankudinova had a very unusual childhood, She never knew her father, and her mother was an alcoholic who was very physically abusive to her as a toddler, she even tried to drown her in a bathroom. She was thrown out in the street with a broken shoulder, and taken in by some of her mother's family, but later taken to an orphanage because she did not speak, and they assumed she was retarded. Her adopted mother (seen on the show) was a physical therapist at the orphanage at the time. It was she, who at the recommendation of one of her doctors, who enrolled her in singing classes at the age of to help her overcome a sever stuttering issue.
In many ways, she is a bit of a miracle.

Diana is a contralto which is the lowest form of the female singing voice and she has the ability to sing with polyphonic overtones is why her voice sounds altered but it is not. I'm American, and a musician of over 40 years, and I was/am equally as impressed as those judges were with Diana Ankudinova. She has become my all-time favorite vocal performer. No other voice has moved me or impressed so deeply as that of this young lady.
Also, "nasaly"? Her voice couldn't be more the opposite of "nasaly". She has a very distinctive chest voice, in the contralto range, which is the lowest range for the female voice. And that at age 15, which she was in this video.
I don't think they listened. And if they listened, they didn't hear.
This is the talented orphan kids show - another thing to add ! Very touching performances she has !

I think the real reason why the judges are so impressed is Diana's amazing vocal technique and control that flows continuously through out the whole song . Along with her unique and other worldly tone . And not so much of the other thing you were guessing .

Что заметил. В основном реакторы все обдимашены напрочь. Даже слишком. Лично мне он побоку. Я его не воспринимаю как музыканта. Так, великолепно исполняющий нотный стан. Но как артист он полный ноль. Другое дело Диана. Она с каждой песней представляет нам свой, уникальный во всём, мир. Там целая Вселенная в её исполнении и исполнениях. Это совершенного разного уровня певцы.
