To all the people saying that downshifting or upshifting an Automatic harms it, need to go read a professional engineering book. Ask me why I've been doing it 5 years daily with no issue...

@@ryannolen5648 won't do it vern, you got a 7.3 powerstroke, in the video is an old pre 1994 7.3 IDI diesel, probably naturally aspirated unless you can hear turbo spool, but the truth is the only thing in common is the displacement, other than that, two different motors entirely, your HUEI injected 7.3 will never sound like that all mechanical, Indirect-Injected 7.3
It's not an actual jake brake, it's just downshifting, the idi had way more initial compression than the power stroke since it was designed around being naturally aspirated, unmuffled they are absolutely obnoxious, the turbo the installed cut the exhaust note greatly but still had a bit of bark when downshifting. Wanna hear real noise then adjust timing and give 3 flats to a naturally aspirated idi, add a 3" or better pipe and they sound like a drag strip ripper, yet still slow, but I love em
Diesel engines can't engine brake like a gasoline engine can because diesel engines don't have a throttle body. Hence, why diesel trucks need to put engine braking systems like exhaust brakes or jake brakes (compression release brake). This IS a jake brake because the compression from the engine is released directly from the cylinder chambers, making the engine slow down the wheels.
Look up "Jake brake" aka exhaust brake. it's a whole separate mechanical device that changes the valvetrain under braking. it's very different from a transmission brake or downshifting like we see in this video.@@Sultan-Sem

Ahhh, love it. I grew up in the North Hills and we use to run our wanna be tuner cars in our group in high school through those tunnels. I was the only one with a truck, lol.
my idi non turbo has true duals 2 inch pipe to texas style tips its pretty fun to do this with it, did it by a tennis court and got them to cover there ears haha

Holy fuck, I never knew dropping a gear on a 7.3 would do that. Only on a stick though, I made an exhaust brake on my auto 99 from the turbo back pressure valve with a solenoid operated pneumatic cylinder. I never got the Jake brake sound, but I'd go down the Grapevine in socal grossing 28-30k, and it would hold speed in 3rd gear. I loved it, never had to touch the brakes. Now I drive a 03 Freightliner Classic with a detroit, and she's friggin loud!

That's a non turbo 7.3 I have a 1995 7.3 powerstroke with a exhaust brake and no it doesn't cackle. My 7.3 powerstroke hisses and a low mumble tone when I engage the exhaust brake. These are the kind of douche bags that makes people that own diesels look bad
Both of y'all are wrong lol. Billy, an IDI and Powerstroke are not the same, therefore you won't get any crackle like the old IDI. Also FBI, the IDI also came factory turbocharged I believe sometime in 92 or 93. Expensive option at the time but worthwhile.

awesome truck i have a red one like it but i have true duel exhaust and glass packs sounds great to me i love the older ford diesel trucks but they was too reliable so they started adding all the computer failing stuff to the newer trucks and the worst of of it all is the regenerating def fluid junk thats out there now i cant help it but all the new trucks are over priced and poor quality
Ive heard about some problems with valve floating if you but traditional jake engine brakes in the T444e because of the hydraulic lifters. BEWARE of this and do the research before you try to do this...
T444E is the international designation for the 7.3 powerstroke if I remember correctly. I believe the E in T444E is for Electronic control. The idi is brain dead no computer.

I did a similar thing to my 7.3 idi and it sounds identical. (still need the downpipe, but have many other things to attend to first)
A 6.9 or a 7.3 idi in second gear at 45 mph strait pipe will make that sound. Do it all the time next to rice burners.
My 6.2 Detroit idi sounds similar but not as loud. Pretty damn cool though.
I have a XJ with a 2.5IDI that makes that same sound when deccelerating, and this weeks i bought a F350 with a IDI.

94.5-97 were obs powerstrokes. Pre 94.5 were idi and turbo idi
