I got to play Foundations of Rome once at a con. I knew I would never be buying the expensive giant box so I resigned myself to only getting to play the game once in a long while. I'm excited that with this version I'll be able to get the game on my table.
Fantastic game. I, like you, didn't want to pay the price for Foundations of Rome, but bought this first chance I got. It's been a hit with everyone I've introduced to it so far. We do play it pretty cutthroat, though. It's akin to something like Ticket to Ride in that you can block as much or as little as you want.
i own Foundations of Rome, and I love it. However, I agree with you. The base game in my opinion can get boring. However, Foundations of Rome provides a plethora of modules to pick from and add into the game. Variable Player powers, unique communal buildings, Random Events, and more…. I personally think this game is only so so without the modules. I do not regret my purchase of Foundations of Rome, and while I spent $150 on it initially, could have been less without the wash…. It’s had the best return on investment compared to the vast amount of plays it has had.

Thank you for staying classy and rambling too.
