This is, arguably, the greatest piece of chamber music ever written. Brahms' clarinet quintet would have been in the running but for the last movement. Both are audial ambrosia, but this work is unique, deep and elevating beauty ordered by one of the greatest of musical intellects in history. An excellent performance by any measure.
I really think the third movement stands alone as one of Brahms' greatest works (even if played as a single piece), it is so packed with emotion. And when I listen to the other movements I just feel like they should have been separated and re-scored as a symphony.
I see your point. Personally I am completely exhausted after listening to the piece. The last few bars are mind-blowing. I am thankful to know the piece and to still have my hearing so I can experience all the power that Brahms intended.
I like the keyboard performance. You can hear that his technique has studied Brahms piano pieces quite well. Gives the lower register a good oomph when called for. Strong thumbs.
Só mesmo este belo quinteto de Brahms para deixar os de Schubert, Schumann e afins no chinelo, pela sua riqueza melódica, simplicidade, ousadia e beleza.

Amazing musicians indeed, but as for the piece itself I really only like the scherzo movement - the chord progression in that movement is one of the most amazing, moving, and emotional things I've ever heard.
01:02 1. Allegro non troppo
16:20 2. Andante, un poco adagio
25:30 3. Scherzo: Allegro
33:06 4. Finale: poco sustenuto
still listening, they are so good!
Beautiful. Young people bringing new life to such a great work, The Brahms Piano Quintet, gives one hope for our musical future.

Yes this version of this outstandingly savage and glorious piece swings harder than any other on youtube.

Wonderful! Even though he finished third over all, Rashovsky does a wonderful job. Trifonov won first that year with the Schumann quintet.

El tercer movimiento hace que te quedes sentado.

This is one of the great pieces of chamber music ever written---not just the scherzo. Listen to the Emanuel Ax version. It's all good brother!
