What a great cellist Marko Ylonen is !!! But then again they are ALL so good.
What a great performance. One of my very favorites for sure.
(January 17,2000. Driving through the night in my truck on the I 90 to Albany; -31F /remember it so well.)
(cold night, heartwarming music !!)
Sublime music. Perfect balance.
What a composer! What a work! What a performance!
One of the masterworks among so many written by Brahms. It is known mainly through the second movement.
This is literally the only piece of music I ever listen to, and it just keeps getting more beautiful every time I listen to it! I've never felt this way about a piece of music before. I just keep coming back for more.
Listen to more Brahms, but only the best recordings. Perhaps you would enjoy Brahms' own piano transcription of the second movement of this work played by Krystian Zimerman on RUclips.
& starting with Brahms ;)
The second String Sextet op 36, Piano Quintet op 34 (Leon Fleisher, Emerson Quartet), and the three piano trios are further recommendations.
Check out the German Requiem if you want another piece to obsess over.
Oh for heavens sake get a life... there's a lot more out there apart from Brahms and Brahms would have been the first person to say it...
One of the most beatiful BRAHMS's chamber music!!;thank you so much!!
There is an episode of Star Trek the Generation where the Vulcan Ambassador to th Federation, Sarek, who happens tobe the father of Spock, is present at a concert on the Enterprise. They play the second movement of this sextet (though there's only a string quartet actually playing!) and Sarek is so overcome with the beauty of the piece that he sheds a tear, and imediately has to leave the concert. One of the few occasions on which a Vulcan is perceived to exhibit "human" emotion.
Nice, but so Boomer (Tek)...
@@sholoms Idiot. Boomers watched the original series in the 60s. TNG ran in the late 80s to mid 90s. It was primarily a generation X thing.
A wonderful performance of this magnificent work. Of special mention is the playing of the ridiculously young Marko Ylonen on 1st cello and the accelerating viola ending of the last movement. Thank you
Peter Brewin So 44 is "ridiculously young"? That makes me feel almost young again. :-)
Excellent performance. Thanks for sharing this with the public!!
This shows why Brahms, the bold and uninhibited, is among the best of the best, with none better, faithful to that inner voice, while open, attentive to the stimuli around him, human and musical, of nature and society, which he injests, interweaves, reconfigures, to reveal in authentic original form, lyrical and profound, moving - in every sense- such marvels that stand with any man-made creation, and more.
Wow! What more could or should be said.
That is a beautiful tribute, Ralph. BRAVO !
This sextet surely was an inspiration for Schönberg when he composed Verklärte Nacht. And such a great performance, thanks!
14:46 We passed S-gate 13.. execute...execute..
amazing sextuor , the chamber music of brahms is a real dream for the eternity , brahms is unreal ,, this musicians are fabulous , thanks for sharing ,,
wunderbar, herrlich, jeder der 6 ist grandios und das Zusammenspiel ein Traum !
El segundo movimiento es verdaderamente inolvidable, gracias a la notable ejecución del joven chelista !!!! que maravilla !!!!!!!
I was first introduced to this work in attending a movie called The Lovers showing at the Irvington Art in Irvington, NJ. I went right out and purchased a Columbia LP featuring none other than Pablo Casals. He hummed as he played.
I have this recording on CD.
Magnífica interpretación. Magnífico Brahms. Sobran las palabras.
Famous second movement with marvelous variations begins at 14:45
Perfect performance of this. Congratulations to the ensemble and THANKS for posting!
It 's wonderful to hear the self controlled passion of Brahms!!
Work of genius. Brilliant performance.
Steven, the final viola solo is amazing
Ein Meisterwerk, seine Seele dem Apotheose der Freude zu bewegen.
I had to go to university, however, I was delayed because of the magnificent performance
Another excellent performance! Thank you!
Bellisima obra,bellìsima interpretaciòn,gracias por compartirla!!

노바제국이여 영원하라
After a second look to this piece I now find it a master piece what the first time I found boredom.
oh magnifique !
Bellísima obra en una interpretación magistral
Deep music, with sound density, on the 2nd mov. variations on "la folia", with much passion.
I was alone looking to sky and repeating this melody to my self
Como se las gastaba Don Johannes Brahms y eso que apenas era su Op. 18, maravilloso.
Beautiful!
i agree - beautiful tone
i know, it's not good form to pick one player from a sextet, but.....
most impressive 1st cello !
Indeed, truly fabulous cello playing in that beautiful theme. Worth learning the cello just to play that alone.
Excellent performance.
Splendid and inspiring!!❤
Im nur eines Wort: wunderbar !
fantastic bramhs and very good performing
Actually, the first cellist is all around awesome!
Brahms is the best composer EVER!!!!!
A magnificent performance, as good as any I've ever heard of this gorgeous work. (And if Marko Ylonen's body language bespeaks the born soloist, hey, his playing nonetheless fits right in with the ensemble...and anyway, Brahms's writing here--much more than that in the second sextet Op.36--calls for a little protagonism here and there!)
lacks just a little urgency in mvt 1 to my ear - ?
I've always thought of the first movement of this work (which I first played back in 1970 or therabouts) as lyrical and mellowl, not as particularly urgent. Different bow-strokes for different folks....
oh, sure, it is those things, absolutely; just am used to its being less mellow than this read, and urgent maybe is not the right word. I just wrote up a performance (Boston Chamber Music Society) of great lyricality and mellowness but also informed by something like urgency or [tries to think of similar quality :) ] .
@14:40, the mvt from which the d minor variations for piano were composed.
An extraordinary work played so beautifully. Thank you for sharing. YOU are the reason I love youtube. :-)
wonderful perf + sound reproduction! thanks.

2nd mvt Andante grade 6 ABRSM viola at 14.45. Thank you very much.
2:27 is this greatest melody ever invented by a man?
YES! This is my current favorite.
Yes.
Until I listen to Opp 8 and 60, then 26 or 25, and then Schubert....
Not a chance.
Yes
No.
first cellist looks really young... and hes amazing... .____.
hes 53, actually
14:44 Now I know where John Williams had his inspiration for the "Force Theme" from Star Wars....
This is other influence of the same "Force Theme". ruclips.net/video/h5GxoFy5Q9E/видео.html

14:47 superb
At 14:42 the piece that made Sarek the Vulcan cry on Star Trek the Next Generation. Excellent performance.
The Andante is Brahms at his most Schubertian. Well, to be honest, the whole work has that influence. Very fine work for a composer still in his 20's, and nicely played here.
While listening to this, the world does not seem to be such a terrible place in which to be alive, after all....
The first cellist at 16:08 is epic!
he really is , and not only at 16:08............
14:45 Viola Solo! :D
Живучка в новия комплекс тука на един булевард близо до където и аз.
bravo !
Thought I'd heard it all, then I heard this.
Natacha R. m'a demandé d'écouter ce sextuor. J'ai obéi, car on obéi toujours à Natacha quand elle vous demande quelque chose. J'ai adoré. Natacha a non seulement du tempérament mais aussi une grande finesse de goût. Spasibo Natacha.
This performance is incredible. Is there any recordings of this or the ensemble?
아름답습니다
Mercy Camille!
immenso
First used by Louise Malle in Les Amants.
BRAHMS HOLDS EVERYONE, EVEN GOD
The 2nd movement starts 14:37, it's wonderful indeed in almost all Brahms chamber musics. How it connects with trekkies?
Here becouse of Sarek!

They make this old warhorse sound new and different. I heard it 50 years ago but never like this.
Ach ! ... Brahms ...
Yves Baudon ahh... Radar...
I pinned this one.
😉😄😄😄
lol thumps up dude haha =)))))
imo Johannes Brahms (the ultimate romantic) makes it sound like any other sextet before and after was just trial, an attempt, like Brahms actually payed the 250 € for the full sextet version. Brahms was a PRO
