watching this video felt like watching a person apologizing somehow for being human. Jen, you are a tower of strength on booktube. Breaks are normal, reading slowly and reflectively is a great aspiration. I think the general feeling of measuring up or 'competitiveness' in the western world creates a lot of anxiety in general, also working in the book industry it makes sense to be exhausted by the time you end work to not want to read any more. My first year working in the library was a year I barely finished reading anything. As a long-time viewer, I'm just really happy when I see your face. You can talk about your penny collection for all I care

I could have made this video word for word, as I have been completely incapable of focusing on a single damn thing the last few months. Haven’t completed a book since the beginning of October. I blamed it on my newer antidepressant, but now that I think about it, it’s amazing that we are still standing. This autumn has been ROUGH and stressful, and even though we had one giant win, we are just fried. When we read, we normally get so much joy out of empathy. Right now, the world is probably experiencing a bit of emotional/ compassion fatigue. Take the time to rest and disconnect. We’ll get our grooves back.

This video honestly made me so sad. Not because it's bad that you aren't reading right now, but because even a hobby like reading, which should be pretty solitary and unrelated to other people, makes people feel like they aren't 'measuring up' to others because of social media. I've felt the way you do on and off this year too - "oh man I wish I could read, everyone else is reading, I also wanna read" and then being unable to focus on anything. Although I guess luckily for me, watching booktube makes me feel more positive in the most ridiculous way: as though watching other people talking about reading will somehow transfer books into me via osmosis...
I was finally able to break my reading block of several months this weekend, by forcing myself to sit down and read with a timer, reading 8 hours on Saturday and 8 hours on Sunday. This is a ridiculous way to do it haha, but it worked? I hope that you can find something that works for you too. And if it takes ages, if your reading block continues into 2021 - that's fine too. Please take care of yourself! I'm so glad I found your channel a few months ago, and I'm sure all of us will be absolutely happy to wait as long as you need for the next video :)

My own reading has taken a massive hit this year. I think I’ve finished 16 books this year...? I feel like so much of my mental space in 2020 is taken up with minutiae related to COVID - concern about the spread, worry for the people I know who have it, precautions in so many different aspects of life - I can’t focus. I’m not sure I’ve read more than 30 pages straight in one sitting since early March. And that might be generous. So you’re not alone. I suspect this year is changing many of us in fundamental ways, rewiring our brains, reconfiguring our priorities.

I have often felt that booktube increases my TBR to a point where there’s no way I’m ever going to maintain any kind of balance. Even if I quit watching booktube today and never added another book to my list, it would take me a good 4-5 years to read all the books on my TBR. Sometimes that overwhelms me, but I’m slowly accepting it. As for not reading, I’m actually surprised you read for fun at all since you read so much for your work. I don’t think there’s any problem with vegging out, especially now.

Walk for days, even months, by the ocean, in nature, let it all go. Breathe. Nothing really matters only your own well being. Read the Tao te ching, like, a couple of lines a day. Observe the world around you. Drink coffee, until, or when u get that natural feeling of appreciation weelling up inside u, for just being alive, then u will naturally find ur way back into things. The sea did it for me, after my sister died. It took nearly a year. I just walked, and the beauty spoke to me. All the best.

I made peace with the idea of not having the same linearity to my reading, and not wanting to measure in certain metrics (or even at all). I don’t like sharing numbers of how much I read because it’s so subjective to what’s going on on my own life and would never help anyone else,

Sorry you are in a reading slump. You are not alone in feeling the weight of the world at this crazy time.
My digging myself out of a slump recipe is one word Rereads.
Find books that first “happened” at a time of joy in your life.
Some of that joy is still stuck in the pages and finds its way out again.
For me in lockdown it’s Cold War spy novels that I read first in my late teens when there was still an Iron Curtain.
The novels are invariably bleak, dark and often without happy endings.
But I was Young, happy and optimistic when I first explored that world.
And somewhere between Checkpoint Charlie and Red Square some of the sprit of 18 year old me emerges to cheer up his 51 year old future self.

Girl. Please don’t worry about this. 2020 has been a mess of a year in every way possible. I normally read between 150-200 books in a year. This year I’ve read half of that lower number, and a LOT of those are my comfort books that I read when I can’t read anything else. The pandemic and lockdown have ruined my concentration power. And then, on top of that, I’ve been ill with an MS relapse, and I lost three relatives unexpectedly. Just recently, some of my relatives caught covid and one was hospitalized for a month. I can’t read much of anything , and that’s fine. I’ve been reading a lot of romance and romance fantasy (a genre I never read before) because that’s what I can digest. Don’t ever say you aren’t a reader because you’re in the longest slump of life. Things hit us all differently. Some people have read 30 books a month. Others of us have read almost nothing. It’s fine. Never compare yourself to other people. It’s not healthy. Don’t stress about watch BookTube if you can’t. I’ve been watching cooking, hair and makeup videos, and the odd Booktube video. Also, do not isolate yourself. Call a friend, have a Zoom party, get out and walk, have a solo dance party. Do something that will make your mental health better. We all love to read and not reading doesn’t mean you love it any less. It just means you can’t read right now, and: That. Is. Fine. Sending lots of hugs your way. Also try listening to a children’s audiobook instead of your usual type of book. I’ve been doing that lately and it’s done WONDERS for my mentality. And I’m not talking middle grade. I mean Paddington Bear or Winnie the Pooh. Lol.

I had to just give myself permission to not read & not stress about not keeping to the goals I had set for myself in that area. I realized circumstances had forced a change in my priorities. For me, it started to pass in September & the love of reading has returned, but it took a few months to get back up to speed so to speak. It is a terrible feeling when you are no longer able to enjoy hobbies for whatever reason. It is even more difficult when those hobbies become tied up in work or competition making you more aware of your level of participation. All I've been able to do this year is re-watch and re-read things I enjoyed years ago when I had no worries and the future seemed simple. I hope you find something to entertain you in your not at work time.
I would much rather a thoughtful critique of a single book than a video with shallow descriptions of 10-20 books. The quantity over quality approach of Booktube has always annoyed me.

I think so many of us can relate. In the pressure of the TBR, yes, completely, I find it just grows as I want to read so many books that are talked about, but if I get to them, I'll get to them at some time or other, and if I don't, obviously my interest wained.
Also, I'm not in a good reading headspace, the world being what it is and my dog has this issue with his foot that just won't go away.
I want to say thank you for being real and human here. I think this video is more relatable than someone coming on and discussing the 25 books they finished this month (more power to em) and makes a lot of us know we're not alone, and neither are you.

The pandemic reading slump does seem to be a pretty common experience, my own reading is cut in half, and in preparing for my top books of the year, I realize that they're all from the before time, which I don't think is a statement about the quality of the book so much as the quality of my reading.
That said, the last time I really, truly couldn't read for months on end, I ended up being diagnosed with depression... Not saying that's you, just saying keep an eye on it. "Inability to find joy in favorite activities", you know...

OK. Who cares what other people read or did? That's absolutely irrelevant. I'm still angry with Steve Donoghue for that time when Sam Sacks and you were discussing books at his place and he didn't film it. You are a real reader, you have nothing to worry about. You're stressed right now so maybe it's a perfect time to reread your favourite books and if you have to reread Middlemarch five times in a row to feel comfortable again who cares?
If you think that we have some "expectations" our "expectations" should be our problem. I mean maybe you're making the situation worse by making everything about it important. I have been reading like crazy, mindless stuff, like "historical" murder mysteries nonstop and then Shaketube happened and I understood how starved I was for something well written and beautiful and now I started a Non-Fiction, a biography of a city. I still want to lapse back into mysteries. I guess murder mysteries are my escapist fiction. I mean my reading this year doesn't make me proud but it briefly makes me happy. Maybe there's something that you normally wouldn't allow yourself to waste your time on, some guilty reading pleasure.
Don't compare yourself to others, don't compare yourself to yourself, pamper yourself a little. Also you should have this nice restorative Zoom chat with Steve. Absolutely)))) But under NO Circumstances compare yourself to HIM))))
Sorry, If I completely missed the point here. You have probably tried all of those things. There's another thing worth thinking over. I think we all are less physically active this year maybe this leads to a lower energy level. Who would believe that usually I avoid giving advice because I'm afraid of people actually taking it and making things worse)))) Sorry) Take care of yourself. It's going to be alright.

This is something that I have struggled with and have had an existential crisis over as of late. Before I discovered booktube I read only a book a month and was content. My first year after booktube I read over 100 books! I was a teacher when the pandemic started and found myself working 10-12 hour days and I just could not keep up. Over the summer when I had no work my brain was fried and I barely read anything. Right now I find myself in the same headspace that you describe. It's a bit brutal but I had to go through my subscriptions and unsubscribe from those whose reading habits weren't aligned with mine. I gave up writing down books unless it really called out to me. I also went through my Goodreads to read shelf and did a massive clear-out. There were so many books that did not spark joy on that list. How many domestic thrillers do I really need to read in my life lol I kept staring at my list and mentally calculating how long it would take to read all the books. Which is silly when even tomorrow isn't guaranteed.

i relate so hard!! my brain is at capacity these days with the pandemic. i've read a LOT this year, but i can't remember any of it. most books are fine, or good, but not memorable at all. i struggle to remember what happens in chapters. what helps is for me to acknowledge that reading IS hard right now, even if it wasn't before. and you said it yourself, you are already reading, for work! whew. our poor lil nervous systems are so overloaded with all this constant information. we are all at capacity. solidarity friend.

Your experience about aimlessly living life resonates with me. To be honest the only meaningful "routines" I got going for me right now are walking my dog in the mornings, working out, and playing video games every once in a while. When my reading mood dries up, so does my booktube mood, so does my interest in buying books. For me, it's all tied together. I don't read, I don't watch, I don't buy. I had read just a single book in the past 3-4 months until recently, when I picked up a short story anthology I'd previously started and just read two stories a day for two days. It seems that was enough to spark my reading mood.

I think it's normal to have a fluctuation in your reading as life happens around it. Booktube is for sure distorting our perception of our own reading and of others. I've read more this year than in any other year since tracking my reading and I still I have barely scratched the surface of what everyone else is reading. Sometimes it just helps to do the maths of what we can actually realistically read and then make peace with that number and accept that we will never read all the books we want to. Especially since we want to read more the more we read.

Hi, Jen. Thank you for sharing your thoughts. I appreciate the honesty and willingness to be open and vulnerable on video. And while saying, it's okay to not be okay is definitely a tired cliche this late in the year, it's also still true. Your priority has to be looking after yourself. Even saying that, I'll add to go easy on yourself there too. No pressure. No expectations. Booktube and books will always be there and yes, there will always be more books. That's the nature of books-they're an unending river. We can't keep up and that's okay too. Hope to see you again again "soon," whether you've read anything or not.

I totally relate to this-Shakespeare tunnel vision aside I haven’t been reading at all, and when it comes to blogging/watching booktube, every time I try to get back into it I just feel like I’m getting left behind by the people whose reading has miraculously not been affected by (gestures vaguely) and it’s a shitty feeling so I just withdraw more. Anyway, you are definitely not alone in feeling this way, and my (extremely hypocritical!) advice is to be kind to yourself.

  • @whatkaylasays
    @whatkaylasays 3 года назад +1

This has been such a hard year for everyone. I can definitely relate to how you’ve been feeling. I’ve had so many ups and downs this year and barely read anything for months. I’m trying to be kind to myself and keep reminding myself that this year has been so awful and it’s okay to not be okay. The news is overwhelming and some evenings I check the time, notice it’s time for bed and realize I didn’t move all evening and didn’t “do” anything other than mindlessly play games on my phone.
I turned around my reading slump by making a promise to myself to read SOMETHING every day. Even if it’s a just a sentence or a paragraph. It really did help me and I’m back to reading. I’m finding it a good escape from everything that is going on in the world, but like you, I haven’t been able to focus on tv much at all. Try to be gentle with yourself. The books will always be there waiting for you when you’re ready to read them. Honestly, how can we ever expect to have a manageable mental TBR when there are new, interesting books coming out all the time? I don’t think having too many books to look forward to reading someday is a problem. :)
I hope things will start looking up for you soon. If you still feel motivation to create videos but can’t concentrate on reading, you could always review books you’ve read in the past that you haven’t spoken about before. As a viewer, I definitely do not care if the creators I follow are reading new releases. The only time I read a new release is when I can get it from my library. I actually really like hearing about back list titles!
Wishing you all the best. Your subscribers will stick around even if you’re not up to providing much content right now. Focus on yourself.

I feel you, I share the sentiment and I’ve been feeling like this on and off throughout my booktube journey since I started (in 2015!) Being soo unconsistent since the very beginning and feeling the pressure I was putting on myself and that was(sometimes still is, although I’m in a ~good moment rn and I don’t want to jinx it) affecting me in a negative way. That’s why I constantly feel like an old new booktuber. Also in terms of TBR, I found myself with so many books I bought that I’m not sure are at all for me because I caved in and let myself be convinced by other people I trust the opinions of and sort of lost what my true interests and inclinations are. I’ve sort of divided the books on my shelves and I’ll be harsher on the ones I’m not sure about and just dnf to get a grip of the situation. I hope I’m getting better at it, my own way, but the fear of being overwhelmed is always in the corner. Take care, I’m sure you’ll find your groove 💓

My gateway to booktube 18 months ago or so was your excellent Robin Hobb video, so thanks for that. I definitely have an insane TBR now and am reading more than ever and yet I watch a ludicrous amount of booktube and envy the kind of yearly numbers some of you are putting up. Slumps do happen to everyone. I do wonder if having no trips or little breaks or anything for a whole year is eventually going to burn us all out, it's a year of relentless shitness. When I hit a bad patch I tend to read an old favourite and that usually does the trick, something that is so joyous that it takes the mind by the horns.

You're adorable lol. I get it. It's merely a phase, I'm sure. Been there, done that. It'll swing back around and you'll be consuming the written word again with the utmost zest and glee. And, it will be soon, I'll warrant. Whatever that relative word does mean. Loved this video. 'Made it through' the whole thing, so blessings upon you too. :-)

I've been going through something similar - since March, I've had 2, maybe 3 "good" reading months (and that's still 4-7 books) and the rest... I'm lucky if I even finish a book.
I also have been struggling with identifying which books I truly want to dedicate time to vs. those that just sound good or interesting on booktube (it doesn't help that I have a varied interest in topics/genres). My Goodreads to-read shelf is overwhelming me and that's not even the physical books I own that I have yet to read!

I stopped using the goodreads to-read shelf because I never ended up reading any of those books - for some reason I'd add and add and never actually get to them. And it's so easy for that number to keep climbing! Hope you get back into the swing of reading soon

💜 a heart for you. thank you for sharing this. just know that you aren't alone in feeling this way, and that its okay to be where you are considering how we are all going through a state of utter confusion and anxiety. consider this as a period of transit - to pause, embrace the feeling and breathe. only love for you. 💕

Hope you find ways to take care. I found myself also feeling guilt about not doing enough, enough reading, enough watching, enough working and it's like this is a hard year, learning to be easier on ourselves is so important.

I’ve only been reading 4 books a month since March. Before COVID-19 it was 8/12/16. #nonficnov has been better. I’ve read 8 books already. Mostly via audio.
Your describing the experience of a lot of us. One of my sisters is a nurse on frontline . She’s so exhausted on days off that she can’t read anything complicated. Like me she reads romance as comfort. Another sister is still recovering from Covid19 ( she was ill over Halloween). Every time she tries to read she falls asleep. My last sister can only read autobiographies at present. My brother can’t read at all. His wife is currently ill and undergoing tests and he’s too anxious to concentrate. So you’re not alone. I’m sending you a big squeezy hug 🤗

Honestly I've thought these exact same things, particularly lately since I just don't have as much time to read and, even though I've fallen a bit behind in learning about new releases, I still discover so many books all the time!

It's so great to know that someone is feeling exactly like I am. I was so mad at myself that I have this extra time after work to finally read my ass off and I just... don't. It's like you said - my brain switches off after work and refuses to cooperate. Since I'm the bookworm of my friend group, everybody's been on about how glad I must be to finally have time to read. And I'm just kinda ashamed.

I know, I keep thinking that I'll never have so much time and permission to read without being pressured to go out and do other things. But I can't read! At least I'm not extroverted, that would make this whole year a lot harder ;)

I clicked so fast when I saw your lovely face. I kinda know what you mean. I read in March and April and in May things were almost back to normal (no more quarantine). But I had so much work, and I was so exhausted when I started my vacation in September. I was at seaside, free and couldn't read a single line ! I do have the same kinds of slumps but this one was different. I needed some time off. I started to read back slowly in October. My normal rhythm of 10 books is down to 6. Non fiction November helped me because I chose books when I was in a conversation with someone really nice (Zadie Smith or Deborah Levy) or Patrick Radden Keefe with Say Nothing. But now, I can't get my mind to read my fiction huge book. I always prefer to watch vlogs ! I can't concentrate enough to watch an entire film or follow a TV series.
I also stopped watching booktubers because as you do, I feel so behind everyone ! So I save their videos for later ! I can't deal with pressure. We're back into semi quarantine and I'm back working from home and I always do extra hours of work and at the end of the day, I just want to go to bed. It's 9:30 pm here and I know I won't read or watch any TV. So yes, I understand you. Don't put too much pressure on your shoulders. If you want to read again, I'll suggest you start with something really short (I did with Zadie Smith's Intimations) or read one your favorite books again or from an author you can blindly follow. Nothing too cerebral. I don't live in the US but I was also totally absorbed by the US Elections. I think it is also exhausting. I watch vlogs with a nice aesthetic and ASMR ! You don't have to come back to do a video about books. I enjoy when you chat because you're always so eloquent and funny ! Take good care. My job is driving me crazy so I've decided not to put pressure on myself during the weekdays. I can read on Saturday and Sunday mornings. Take care !!! Hugs from France

You not feeling up to making videos makes me sad as I just miss your face, pal ^^
But unfortunately, I relate to the terrible reading time of not being able to finish stuff and I just don't watch booktube cuz the very idea of hearing someone discuss their progress and the stuff they have read makes me question my right to ever call myself a reader again. And I just don't want that.
When one gets used to the idea of being a reader and adapts it as part of their personality not being able to read or just being mentally tired and gravitating towards other interest is devastating. I'm really trying to get myself to the point where reading comes naturally and I don't have to schedule it in order to maintain some grain of self-recognition.
I'm sending you lots of love and hugs, Jenny:) You are forever one of my book people and I'm crossing my fingers that you find a way out of this book numbness.
I hope to see and hear from you soon ^^

I can relate to your feelings about Booktube right now, not because I'm also in a slump, but because I just started my master's so even though I really want to read books and feel like it, I know I shouldn't and should instead focus on my courses so I get annoyed and stressed watching Booktube and getting so many recommendations that sound amazing but that I don't have time to read so I've just not been watching as much but it's fine, it's all fine! :p

Hi Jen, thank you for being so candid and honest. I agree that BookTube can get overwhelming sometimes! I'm a little more casual about how I watch it now - but your videos I still sit through with that same googly-eyed delight as when I first started watching BookTube :) (I truly admire how effortlessly eloquent you are). You are not alone in finding your brain not holding up their end of the bargain! Hang in there and take it easy ❤
