Checkin in
John Popper was a student of mine at Princeton High School, and his music was already cooking then! I'm glad his band has been so successful! Patricia Thomas
Awesome!
Did you teach him anything about music? I assume yes, because a high schooler can't know it all, so...do you hear any of what he learned in your class in his music? That would be awesome.
Great story.
HOPE YOU NEVER GAVE HIM THE "RUN AROUND" HA HA COULDN'T RESIST 🤣😅😆
wow
I remember when my dad used to play this for me, just the main strumming pattern, and sing the abc's song to me in time with the melody. When he showed me the actual song, I was blown away and loved it as a kid, and now I'm 19, trying to learn this on the guitar for him to surprise him soon. I love you dad ❤
I hope you learned it and your dad was blown away. How Cool
I ❤ This Kid You have already made your old man proud and I don’t even know y’all but I know that much is true!!! He sounds like he’s an awesome dad who was probably blown away and inspired by an awesome kid ❤

Wow. This is amazing. Just had my first son 2mo ago and this really hit me. Thanks.
@@lazysod3 congrats for having your son! He's gonna do great things when he gets older, you just wait :))
Man 1994-95 was a good year for music 😀
True
Yeah cuz, we had it pretty sweet, festivals, albums and acid! Not to mention the kitty you could call if you played a guitar, hell, you didnt even have to be good at it! I almost drowned in it cuz!
In fact, it was a good two years.
Not as good as the 60s an 70s!! Wink!
Going back to our roots in the 90s
Whoa I didn't think Danny would ACTUALLY be in the music video!!
+RJ Garcia OMG I said the same thing

+RJ Garcia That's not even a fucking joke. It looks EXACTLY like Dan.
yeah ok but look at the drummer bc its literally arin

You know that blues traveler song? The one that goes...
*proceeds to frantically and upsettingly imitate weird harmonica noises to the exact beat of the song*
Yesss...
We're sorry harmonica :-))
I see you're a man of culture as well
Tell me why I did the same thing to my mom
"Why, yes. I do know that song."
😂😂😂😂
Blues Traveler was a great band and very underappreciated. When you hear their music you are instantly transported back to the mid 90s.
Facts... so many underrated bands and artists in the 90s. What a time to grow up in
But we did follow and adored them in KALIMPONG, WEST BENGAL, INDIA then . And we are one of the most secluded places in India. We're musically advanced though I guess and I'm ELATED!!!!!😊😊😊
And what a beautiful place and time to be...1990's.
Still is...
My son Mark turned me on to the blue travelers I love instruments. And they are good 😊
Awesome song from 1995! I listened to Blues Traveler's "Run-Around" while watching some MTV in the Summer of 1995. Really great! 😊
"We're gonna get content ID'd because you're _too perfect."_
gonna get Smooth McGroove'd
Arin did smoothMcGroove it
Try to convince me the "cowardly lion" doesnt look like Danny
When my dad passed away in 2003, I didn't realize how little left id have to remember him by. Except Blues Traveler.
I remember being a kid and driving through downtown Phoenix with my dad, this song blaring on the radio. Its weird hearing a song or smelling a scent from the distant past and almost being teleported back to that place. Oh, the nostalgia.
I've read smell can activate memories stronger than a photo or anything else. I hear or smell something and I too am taken back.
Yeah music is the one device that for me, seems to always be stuck to a specific time frame of my life...I can relate to how little you have left of ur dad bcuz it's the same for me... Instead of music, however, when it came to my dad, it was pro wrestling... EVERY time since he's passed that I happen to catch a second of wrestling on TV (in the super rare instances that I actually watch TV nowadays) it's one of the very very few tangible mediums I can connect with his memory... Me and my Pop were pretty damn cool once I grew TF up and stopped getting myself in constant stupidity...my dad passed in 2015 and even I KNOW that until I die, I'm always going to miss him like crazy... Bcuz you only get a father once in ur life and that's why at a minimum, he matters... You only ever get the one...sorry for the essay but ur comment hit me unexpectedly and I kinda just reacted
🖼❤❤
Bittersweet melancholy, my brother...
Same here. I have my Dad's old car, and it's a 2006, and still smells like new car and light cigarettes.
When I wax cars, and use Meguiar's products I'm instantly taken back to 1996.
I lost my dad in 1999, he loved this song and Hook. I know that exact feeling.❤
You're in a bad mood, put this song on. Just a feel good, nostalgic song. Still love it. It reminds me of simpler times.
It brings me right back to childhood. Something about the sound of 90's music just hits different.
I like coffee and I like tea
And now I’m saying my ABCs
Reminds me of the worst times of my life as a teen not cuz I was a teen ,no need to say more, but this song gave me the lil 3 min vacation n a lil better outlook on my future , gotta remember to let go everyday
Brings me back to my high school days! Good times! 💙

Have many people actually sat down and read the lyrics and taken them in? The man is a master with descriptive lyrics, making them fit both lyrically and contextually and it's just a pleasure on top of already good music....
I'm getting real sick and tired of your crap.
Yes!!!! I've never had to look up the lyrics, but as an 11yr old (when the song came out), it took me a couple years to finally understand everything they're singing. Great lyrics indeed!!! 👏 👌 👍 🙌 ❤️ 😍 👏 Idk if ppl agree with me, but I feel like "Hook" is harder than "Runaround" to get all the words to.
Hook is such a great song lyrically. It’s a straight blueprint.
Casting them spells on ya
@@tommcfarland5368the "hook" is a perfect example....
I was John's English teacher. But one day in class after the Christa Mc Auliffe disaster, he sat on my desk and sang a song he had composed in response to what happened to her. I knew then that John had great talent and was primarily focused on his music. He and others would hang around my classroom during lunch to make music.
This is bad ass!!!
I wish you remembered the lyrics.
Thats pretty cool..glad you shared that story...these guys deserve more recognition.
Sure you were... 🙄
I hope he sees this!!!
A story ,
A young kid is sad and depressed. This kid tries to take his own life . His parents find him on the kitchen floor and the kid is brought to the hospital. After months away from home the kid returns to his normal life . Feeling lost and alone the kid hears this song for the first time , it cheers the kid up . That little bit of cheering up saved this kids life . That kid was me . I’m still here in 2021 . God bless
Glad to hear you're still with us.
Good on ya, mate!
Good stuff! Glad you’re still here and sharing your love for music - just goes to show, a song came change (or save!) a life!
Great story!!!! Glad you are here to enjoy this music. Music is for the soul.

Yeah, I'm guessing you're referring to Dan as the guy dressed as the Cowardly Lion? Dan is a furry confirmed!
Woah! Danny is really in the video xD
I was about 11 when this bombass song debuted, and I went bungee-jumping in Orlando, Fla., on my 12th birthday while "Hook" played on the radio. So, any classic Blues Traveler, instantly brings me back to the golden days of my childhood. 😀
What he says in this song is basically telling what is going on in the industry. It's pure genius.
Nah he wrote this about a girl he liked named Felicia who turned him down. She was the original bassist.
Mtv didn't want to show the headliner of this band as a big fat dude during the grunge era.. so they put that counting Crows looking guy as the singer in the video... But then I guess they realized how stupid that was
@@DoYouReallyWant2no The video is an homage to the Wizard of Oz. Dorothy (even her driver's license says "Dorothy Gale," the full name of Dorothy in the movie) and her 3 companions: scarecrow, tinman (silver), and lion (brown). Red ruby slippers. The four friends are trying to get in to see the Oz. Fat singer is Oz. The wizard of oz is a regular man hiding behind a curtain and title of "wizard." Fat guy is regular man hiding behind the curtain and grunge counting-crows front man.
And just like in the movie, the dog pulls back the curtain to reveal the regular guy behind the sham.
hook is another ironic meta song that also actually worked!

@@martinmarshall7509 I don't think so, I believe the song is written by John Popper. If you are referring to the Wizard of Oz, then that went right over my head, and you sir, are funny as hell!

I remember being a kid and driving through downtown Phoenix with my dad, this song blaring on the radio. Its weird hearing a song or smelling a scent from the distant past and almost being teleported back to that place. Oh, the nostalgia.
So amazing! They really showed what's possible with a harmonica. I had no idea that a harmonica could sound like that.
When you really pay attention to the action in the music video, it's a funny parody of Wizard of Oz and commentary on how some performers are popular for looking a certain way, even if they aren't really that talented, while others somehow manage to finally get recognition for how talented they are even if they aren't pretty or handsome in a conventional way.
Listen to a bit of Sugar Blue while you're at it.

Sitting in the passenger seat of my dads pickup heading to the cottage in northern Ontario. Me and my mom on the way to school in the morning. Back yard family party at the pool with tons of people having a great time. The Wizard of Oz and The Blues Travelers
For the confused Blues Traveler fans or casual song-goers:
Game Grumps is a channel on RUclips where two guys named Dan and Arin(and others, but mainly those two) play various video games and give humorous commentary over them. In one episode, Arin says "You know that one Blues Traveler song, the one that goes," and then proceeds to imitate the harmonica intro with his voice. That is how a lot of people found this song and are making references to it in the comments. Thank you for coming to my Ted-Talk.
Thanx

God, can you imagine how awesome life was to go to a Blues Traveler concert back in the 90's?
Calling your friends on your landline phone, getting in the car and talking to each other, chilling, with no cellphone distractions? Fuck, man.
We had cell phones in the 90s.
Just not smartphones.
But yes how times have changed...we actually used to enjoy talking to each other.
The other day I saw a table of teens in Five guys..they were all sitting quietly staring at their phones.
I find this humerous and quite disturbing at the same time.
yeah we had it good.
Saw them in 91 or 92 (I think right around the time "Four" came out) at a super small club in Portland OR. Not crowded (maybe 150 people total). I think it was a Wednesday night. Stood on the dance floor in front of the stage smoking one-hitters with strangers. Went to show alone as none if my friends wanted to go. Top ten live show.
It was pretty great
Hahaha. You must have been rich as hell to afford a cell phone in the 90s :D All we had were our land lines.@@KaosII1968
This song always makes me want to go play in the sunshine. I'm 56. It has snowed 18" in the last 24 and hasn't stopped yet. It's dark.
. . . .
. . ..
Where's my mittens?
This is one of the best videos I've ever seen in my life. It is only after I got older that I realized and appreciated what was really going on .
Was obvious to me the first time I saw it. On MTV, that'll give you an idea I'm probably much older than you. MTV played all music videos.
I didn't realize until now why they had the Wizard of Oz characters. It's supposed to draw attention to the idea of the man behind the curtain pulling the strings.
I always reference this video when talking about how much of the time these days success in music tends to have more to with how someone looks than their actual talent.
lol i never really took notice till now wow i must of been drunk or stoned
Thanks didn't notice either was busy checking out Dorothy back then
Also, fun fact: the guy trying to stop them ( 0:58 ) ...that guy....he is also the guy on the couch in The Hook video, where he represents the general public. He's basically playing the samw character here as well. The Hook is about how people dont care about the music or feeling associated with the words... they just like 'catchty little tunes', 'hip three minute diddies'. He flips channels aimlessly and misses the meaning of the song completely....as do most people. They just like the music. They dont realize the lyrics are mocking them or that its really just Pachelbel's Canon in D (except its in C in the hook).....they just want to shut their brains off and listen to tunes....
....and here, the same guy is trying to keep that same illusion alive.
Bonus fact: ....if you watch 'The Hook', when he gets to the third verse (the rap kind of part), the TV starts flashing random images of the band, Paul from Letterman, The Weather Channel, a bunch of old cartoons and shows.....and the Run-Around video. You have to slow it down to see it clearly but if at normal speed, you can still it. He even sees himself and makes this confused face at the TV.
.....in the end, he turns his TV off and picks up a book about the Civil War.
I didnt notice any of this until today, so dont think this is something I caught on to the first time. Just to be clear. Haha
This is audio cocaine. A pure masterpiece.
One of the greatest bluesmen who’s still alive!

Shots fired at counting crows
Still love the crows
I’ve always wondered
In counting crows' (specifically the singer) defense, what do you do when given THAT video setting
@@jonclevenger7669 There was an article written in the LA Times that said he was making fun of Adam and the singer was supposed to be him. But that was just the journalist's opinion. John has said Run-Around was sung with Counting Crows' Adam Duritz's style on the hit "Mr. Jones" in mind.
"I felt like I was ripping him off on that one, but I don't think people really make that connection," he says. "At the same time, though, I'll hear Sister Hazel and say, 'God, that guy was thinking of me when he did that.'"
The Times Article said: “The main theme of this video is to make fun of the Counting Crows, something which I applaud. Without actually flashing the name Counting Crows, it pokes fun at this one-hit wonder of a band right down to the bad Van Morrison impression, rhythmless dancing and bar haircut of the lead singer, Adam Duritz.”
That's what I thought too.
The most gorgeous of all Dorothys, by my reckoning.
I just saw these guys live in Joliet, IL and they are electrifying live. Great band 😀
I saw them open for Alman Bros when I was 15 . I can't believe I remember it it was ages ago. They were even better live. 🤸

When I was in my early teens watching this on MTV I always thought it was about a dumb girl trying to get into a party. As an adult, I now realize John was making a statement as a Blues musician about how the band was expected to look in the 90's (aka like Nirvana and other popular grunge artists at the time) in an era when that brand of music had widely fallen out of fashion. Blues Traveler is still one of the Greatest!
RIP Ken Ober, Iykyk was a HUGE part of my teen years, coming home from 8th grade just smoked a bowl me and the homies turn on Remote Control and make cheese quesadillas in the microwave. I miss the ease of life back then. Kids will never know how different it was back 80s n 90s. 🙂

"Run-Around"
Oh,
Once upon a midnight dreary
I woke with something in my head
I couldn't escape the memory
Of a phone call and of what you said
Like a game show contestant with a parting gift
I could not believe my eyes
When I saw through the voice of a trusted friend
Who needs to humor me and tell me lies
Yeah, humor me and tell me lies
And I'll lie too and say I don't mind
And as we seek so shall we find
And when you're feeling open I'll still be here
But not without a certain degree of fear
Of what will be with you and me
I still can see things hopefully
But you
Why you wanna give me a run-around
Is it a sure-fire way to speed things up
When all it does is slow me down
And shake me and my confidence
About a great many things
But I've been there I can see it cower
Like a nervous magician waiting in the wings
Of a bad play where the heroes are right
And nobody thinks or expects too much
And Hollywood's calling for the movie rights
Singing hey babe let's keep in touch
Hey baby let's keep in touch
But I want more than a touch I want you to reach me
And show me all the things no one else can see
So what you feel becomes mine as well
And soon if we're lucky we'd be unable to tell
What's yours and mine, the fishing's fine
And it doesn't have to rhyme, so don't you feed me a line
But you
Why you wanna give me a run-around
Is it a sure-fire way to speed things up
When all it does is slow me down
Tra la la la la bombardier this is the pilot speaking
And I've got some news for you
It seems my ship still stands no matter what you drop
And there ain't a whole lot that you can do
Oh sure the banner may be torn and the wind's gotten colder
Perhaps I've grown a little cynical
But I know no matter what the waitress brings
I shall drink it and always be full
Yeah, I will drink it and always be full
Oh I like coffee, and I like tea
I'd like to be able to enter a final plea
I still got this dream that you just can't shake
I love you to the point you can no longer take
Well all right okay
So be that way, I hope and pray
That there's something left to say...
For you, now
Why you wanna give me a run-around
Is it a sure-fire way to speed things up
When all it does is slow me down
Oh, yeah, now
Why you wanna give me a run-around
Is it a sure-fire way to speed things up
When all it does is slow me down
Thank you for that! (:

Just saw this music video for the first time yesterday and I have to say, it's absolute genius.
The idea of a "visually appealing" band being used by a promoter with the sound of a talented but not "typical" popular band hidden in the Wizard of Oz metaphor is a great way to comment on the trend popular music has followed for the last 30-40 years.
You beat me to everything I had to say about this video. I've heard this song many times over the last 29 years since it was released, but I am only just now discovering the music video in 2023. You summed up my thoughts exactly.
I wondered if the "visually appealing" band were the Counting Crows? The jumping/dancing lead man sure looked like him.

Ken Ober is the man behind the curtain and the couch dude. When MTV had a game show called "Remote Control" that was pretty bitchin. Love Blues Travelers music and the fact that they could be self depricating and take a few folks with them while doing it. The hook is one of the best songs written, IMHO. Both Crows and BT are killer bands, no use arguing as they both ruled the airwaves at the time. Bo doubt they were all counting a lot of money back then. Give props to both because they both earned it. Need more peace and love these days. You're all awesome for taking time to watch, comment and support both bands! Great times that most of us wish we could relive. Music does that and thats pretty sweet.
RIP Ken Ober
These guys were never my bag. I remember when all these songs by them were getting heavy radio play and MTV as well. They may not be for me but, John Popper is immensely talented...
My dad once played the mountains win again after a trip west to Idaho and I got hooked on this album. All I can feel when listening to any of these songs is goofing off in my computer classes with my friends junior year. Time is fleeting, enjoy it while it lasts.
Mo1d I am Idaho
After years of this song being a faded memory I can now appreciate the band and songs
p.s. I just found the song again after years
Same. I heard all their songs on the radio as a kid, and I just rediscovered them, too!
Trevor Fischer cool
+Nick “Rockfish00” Kennedy They are playing August 4th during a RibFest near my hometown. Ribs and Blues Traveler? I think I might have to go😁
there is such thing as a food festival?
An amazing song, incredible vocal, with absolutely stellar harmonica parts. Pure genius!
LOVE LOVE LOVE this song! ❤️❤️❤️ Raises my spirits so high just hearing it!
I'm waiting for the day where Game Grumps comments completely engulfs every video on youtube.
+Bulletcurver679 wtf is the grumps?
Well grumps fans are generally autistic and will jump off a bridge if someone told them too :D
StarBucks718 well it's happened here
It's been 2 years since this comment and this is the first time I've heard of the grumps. So looks like they failed thank goodness.
@@Joeysnew532 lol same here.
As a kid I never realized these guys were OG trolls, their music was super-popular, made no sense, and made fun of the music industry the whole time
While this music video is certainly a nod to how much of a sham the music industry was (or is) as a whole, the song itself is a story of unrequited love the singer and lyricist experienced
@@SalientLamprophany It wasn't a nod, it was blatant. 😂
@@SalientLamprophanySinger and Bassist. The lyricist and singer are both John Popper.
Fun Fact - these lyrics come VERY QUICKLY! Be sure to study /rehearse before attempting this at 🎤 karaoke 🙂
This song would never get any play or promotion if it were released today. The music industry has changed so much.
The 90s.....nothing like it. You'd be lying if you said you wouldn't drop everything and go back.
L M 63, yep I wouldn’t be born. Wouldn’t have to student loans
I miss the 90s for sure...BT’s skill would not be appreciated today. It was okay to be different back then....music has become a cookie cutter industry for sure.
Well I've never been only heard of the legends
GOD I'd go back....run my ASS OFF to get there!!!
I wasn't born until '97 but assuming you meant that I would want to go back in time as the age I am now... no. Please no. Being gay was *very* stigmatized back then. Being trans wasn't even on most people's radar.
So, I would probably be beaten to death.
SMOOTH MCGROOVED ARIN UR TO GOOD
I remember being in 8th grade and having to stay after with my hot math teacher Mrs Dodd and this video was always playing on the tv she had on mtv constantly. The girl in this video was so pretty.
Blues Traveler, John Popper in particular, incredibly underrated.
John Popper iz the best harmonica player I've ever heard. God Bless you.
A story how Dan and Dorthy try to get in a game grumps show to finally see Jon and Arin live.
lol
Danny is already up on stage, pretending to be the actual singer.
Which one is Arin and which is Jon?
John Popper's voice is so authentic! My cousin used to sing this with all her little heart when we were kids!!
At the Silver Diner with the personal tabletop jukebox that they had on every table, I would eat a solitary breakfast around midnight and listen to this, and Mack the Knife and Somewhere Across the Sea 🤷🏽♀️ I had amazing teenage years. Still a loner.
The harmonica playing is so amazing.
Such a great song! I love how he plays the harmonica
How have I missed this wonderful and beautiful masterpiece? 😮❤
I have been searching for this song for years. For years I have been trying to use google to look it up and youtube too, and even when I hear it on the radio, I try to memorize the lyrics to look it up and I haven't been able to.
I have finally found it. Finally!!!!!!!
"Harmonica run around" found it for me lmao
This a cool interpretation of the Wizard of Oz and it’s super smooth. Love it since my childhood
