I run 2 workers with 7 gpu's each, it was NOT stable on windows at all, running completely stable on HiveOS i only changed to HiveOS beacuse i could not get windows to run stable with 7 gpu's pr worker, it ran fine with 6 on windows but not 7, and its running stable on HiveOS. HiveOS can also run 8 gpu's but becomes unstable (half a day to max 1 day until it needs a power recycle) and i think its because 8 gpu’s then use all the pci lanes in the cpu.

Can totally understand when you have multiple rigs and they are dedicated miners. For me, 2 of 4 mining rigs are daily drivers as well... so Windows is used on all 4. Setting up an auto mining start up is really simple, it is like setting up anything in the start up folder, but with admin permissions. This coming from someone who is only a little tech savvy and just learned from mining this year. I haven't had to ever remote in, and downtime is limited to once in a blue moon restarts, but mining resumes within a minute or two of the power down. I totally get using HiveOS, but seems like under 8 rigs on site, Windows is pretty rock solid.

I would actually advocate HiveOS over Windows as a good environment for someone starting out. Those 4 free rigs while mining on hiveon pool go a long way, and you can always mine to alternative pools if mining anything other than Ethereum with the 4 free rigs. I have 3 rigs with 18 GPUs total on HiveOS and its all free to use for me.

    • @ciphered2000

@6:54 The statement that once you have more than 2 rigs they charge you is not correct. It is indeed up to 4 as long as you are using the hiveon pool (if mining Ethereum). It's a great option starting out.

I moved to HiveOS a few weeks ago and will never look back. I made the move from Windows because I was having issues with OS crashes when I added a 5th card to one of my rigs. I made the move to HiveOS and was able to get 6 cards on that rig. Once I was there I was very happy with the convenience that comes with HiveOS. With batch files and trex, windows can be used to automate the entire process (recovery, reboot, etc). Trex webgui can also monitor multiple rigs. With the 3070 TI and up cards, it's nice to be able to monitor ram temps. I see so many people out there not getting proper hash due to ram temps and they just keep mining as their ram gets cooked. We're at the point where I've seen some a few cards get dumped on ebay that can't even oc to 800 any longer. For those missing the ram temps, and accepting reduced hash, they may be saving time, but not money. Kill a ddr6x card and take a $1800 hit does save anything.

I started back in June with windows using minerstat. I lost so much money with my miners going down while I was at work or in the middle of the night. @@ZenTauren had too many issues with my rigs, I only have 2 rigs, an 8x1070 rig, and a mixed 8xAMD rig. I also have a few gaming computers (my kids computers) mining. For the rigs windows was actually more stable than the msOS. Now it might have been the miners I was using or some other factor, but I have had far less issues with hiveos. My kids computers are still using minerstat for windows, those don't have too many issues. But I would say I was down at least 25% of the time which was unacceptable for me. There might have been more that I could have done to make everything more stable, but as a relatively new miner I don't have the time or experience to figure it all out. Hiveos has given me more peace of mind, and higher profits. It may have been all user error, but then again, same user different os, better results.

All the times I have been down while using hiveos, I'm pretty sure it was an issue with the miner not the OS, I seem to be really stable using NBMiner. The last few weeks or so the only time I have been down was when I shut down on my own to upgrade or add a new card, and when I lost power.

The biggest problem with Windows is that Windows defender and Norton Antivirus thinks mining software is a virus (which it is not) and so they keep on quarantining the mining software and forcing you to take unnecessary actions. Also, Windows tries to do automatic updates and that screws up the computer every time and you have to go in there and fix it.

    • @juggernautz
      @juggernautz 2 года назад

Create a crypto file and go into anti-virus settings and exclude the entire file and both WIN and the virus scanner will ignore the programs & future downloads. I made that change and life is a little easier. Alternative, use a separate drive to store crypto files on and exclude that drive from being scanned automatically. But you will want to manually scan files. Good news is most anti-virus software will warn if the new crypto file downloads something else that is on the warning list like a virus, trojan etc...
I hate the auto update crap, I tried to use manual update settings and magically Microsoft changed my settings to auto as if I can't mitigate my own risks. I prefer to review and exclude some updates.

I have to strongly disagree with you on this one.
No registry editing is required at all in Windows. I have 6 rigs, all of them with 12 cards, set up to restart every three hours. Simply done in event scheduler. Don't have to enter password or pin when Windows boots - also easily done through user management. It all takes about 5 minutes for a new rig. Miners start automatically when Windows boots.
And I didn't even pay for Windows, as you can download it free of charge directly from Microsoft. If you do not use advanced options in Windows, you won't ever need to pay for it. You'll have a watermark on the lower right hand corner of the screen to activate it, but it'll operate indefinitely.
For remote management, I use TeamViewer.
    Simple.

Why I don't use Hive OS for mining. I tried Hive OS when I first built my rig. I put it on a USB drive and started Hive up it would run 2 minuets and freeze up. The second time I tried Hive OS I made a new USB Hive drive it ran one and trashed my USB drive and wouldn't boot again, it took me a lot of time trying to fix the USB. About a month or more ago my T-Rex running on windows started giving me can't find nonce errors and I could no longer overclock my GTX 1080 cards with Afterburner without getting can't find nonce. I tried overclocking with the T-Rex commands but I still got the can't find nonce error. I can use the ETH Pill and the --mt just not --ccclock or --mclock. So, I tried Hive OS again this time putting it on an SSD. I booted Hive OS setup everything and tried overclocking my GTX 1080 cards but all I got was configuration errors, I even got them trying to overclock my 1660 cards. I could only get the ETH piil and/or mt to work. My hash rates are lower on Hive OS than windows so, I gave up on Hive OS and went back to windows.

I am at 1.4gh atm and have been toying with the idea of switching to hiveos for a while now but I use nicehash so I can control it from my phone idk I feel like the switch to hive is something that is going to happen I just do not know when.

Water cooling add unnecessary complexity and cost to mining at large scale.

I almost burned my house bec of an error in windows... the software some how rest and started pulling 100% TDP from the cards and created a fire ....since then switched to hive and never what so ever such thing ever happened

I tried using windows for 6 months. Rigs crashed all the time and I was unable to get more than 5 cards going at a time. It's a huge waste of time and it's troubleshooting hell.

Hiveos is actually free for 5 rigs right now, and the installation and management is so much more convenient than windows

I mine with Windows 10, and it’s a pain! Lots of configuring settings, lots of crashing. As you know! Disable automatic updates and Windows Security, and it will be more stable. I may configure a dual-boot system and give HiveOS a try sometime in the future, just for “Fun,” as I do love the interface… we shall see!

I tried hive once and the cards were less stable than on windows. I'll try it again at some point.

Definitely give it a proper try.
Switching to HiveOS was one of the best decisions I could’ve made, especially for remote management. Important to get your overclocks correct or it will be very unstable.

Bravo!! I am using HiveOS with two things and there are new windows MiniOS this much less than windows 10, the new MiniOS widows does not have to defend or update at all nor does it work operating performance, it weighs in almost 15 gigs and it shows you save less energy, it was removed 45 watt. of course I am using HiveOS and MiniOS

I think the arguments are there, but if you use other windows tools, maybe like a windows server setup and hook ur mining pcs to that, i think you can make your own "HiveOS"-typa system (yes, even with remote control)

and i even made a bat-file to run the mining bat files on my computer, wich i can easily edit to use a newer version or change coins

Ive been thinking about switching back to windows. Use it mining on the kids gaming pcs. Using the newer miners with clocks in batchfiles im getting better hash and less power than hive-running dual 2070supers and dual 2080.....95-105 watts at wall
You should do a test with that 2060 super.

I don't know. Ubuntu, T-rex and mining on Hiveon... Proprietary piece of software to monitor, NoMachine to control machines. Stable machines so almost nothing to do. Why pay an OS? And I am as stable on Windows machines.

I started with one rig in windows and I had some problems and lots of lost hours because of errors and programs like team viewer lots of time didn't helped, and the problem about the graffic cards reseting the setting after this errors, so after 3 months I found that hive os is free with one rig so I switched to see what happens, and in 9 months in hive I had only 2 stops not originated by power cuts or a broken internet cable. So very recomended.

I 100% agree except on one point. Windows is not Free. You still need to buy a license and if you want to use RDP you must buy a Windows Pro license. If you account for that HiveOS is a much much cheaper option. One reason to use Windows though is if you are running AMD cards and using NiceHash. The NicehashOS only supports NVIDIA. I have HiveOS on my to do list but I am not quite there yet. Like you had before I have smart plugs connected to my rigs I know go down for some reason and have them set to always power on. Right now this is working but long term as the number of rigs grows I don't see keeping it that way. Other reason is that on Windows with NiceHash I am payed out in BitCoin and I know I will have consistent payments to pay off my rigs.

I was using Hiveos, but they keep having some issues recently. I switch every thing over to minerstate instead. I do have one machine that window mines as it's my gamer computer, but the other two rigs are both running a minerOS as one is a Nivida machine and the other AMD.
