  • We made some major progress in this one. The 1.6 16v engine is mounted, The wiring loom is in place and we got the Drive By Wire conversion sorted for the throttle pedal too. We also got the car sat on it's suspension too but it isn't where we need it to be so some more research is required.

    Hi Dan, don't stress and beat yourself up about it running over £5k - I think all of us as much as you would rather this be done properly as opposed to it being done to a strict budget. We all know budgets get blown out of the water with car projects and that sometimes it's best not to focus on the cost and more so focus on the quality of the outcome. Hopefully, you can recoup some costs from breaking the donor! Absolutely wicked series this one - the highlight to my Sundays haha 😃Keep up the good work mate, keep churning them out!

      Nothing wrong with the project becoming "how close to our budget can we stick" rather than, "built for under X"

      @@usrnmeunknwn8691 No nothing at all wrong with that. Anyone can look at a car and think “yeah I can get this done for under X amount” but like anything, until you start delving into things and realising that it needs more work than previously anticipated, you can’t expect to stick to that budget if you want a true showpiece at the end of it.
      Take property for example - you can buy a house for £150k which looks structurally sound that just needs a little redecoration, with the anticipation of spending max. £5k on painting, new flooring throughout, the odd new interior door and light fitting here and there, and a general spruce up of the garden. 3 weeks into the modernisation and the boiler has just packed up. Whilst ripping out the old boiler, your contractor has managed to damage the plaster behind it which requires the whole wall to be skimmed, and then repainted after the plaster has fully dried out. All this adds extra cost and time on the renovation.
      The same applies to cars. The whole “£5k budget” of this series should be used as a guide, that Dan was going to aim to stick to. What do you expect him to do should he go over budget - a) completely abandon the build and scrap it, b) spend all the money where he can and bodge the rest and make it into a patchwork project, or c) continue as he is, accept that it’s going to run over the estimated budget and actually build something quality?
      I know what I and 90% of other viewers would prefer to see.

    Nicely done, mate.. budget's are meant to be broken 😂 even if it ends up being a 6k or 7k build that's still minimal amount to some show cars that have 30k to 40k spent on them. Looking forward to next Sunday as always mate 👍

    I think try to keep cost under control but Like you say do it properly. Then people can see why these things always end up more then you think and you’ll get an awesome set of wheels.

    Battery move. Grab the battery lead from a 3 series BMW, they have theirs in the boot and use the battery box from a MK4 Golf or same era Passat car as they contain the battery nicely, worked well in my MK2.

    I think you need the cage which fits on the shifter rod spline, or ideally the whole thing. Also the ball on the cast aluminium fitting which fits onto the gearbox selector shaft is different on a 5 speed car. I’m not convinced about the whole arb difference between 4 and 5 speed models. From what I’ve seen it only provides slightly more clearance for the down pipe. I’ve a 5 speed 87 coupe with a symmetrical arb. Pretty sure I had it out with Jonny Leech about this before. Think he convinced me there was a difference on very early cars, although I can’t remember what that difference was!
    Anyway, nice to see someone else enduring the pain of Polo money-pits. If you accept it as a total loss, everything is fine! I could’ve had a 911, what I’ve sunk in Polo’s. But I couldn’t have had the best 911 with the best parts.

    😂 budget build just shows how much money you could need for a build and not paying anyone to do the work and how much fuel you have spent. Picking up parts. Still coming on great and great to learn what fits and changes you have to do.

    theres usualy a shock inside the tube of the coilover. you could take it out then modify the bottom of the tube to make the shock sit lower, after that you cut some of the top of the coilover making it shorter.
    If the ta tecnix shock is too long use a golf 1 standard, their short.

    Can you chop and reweld the bottom of the front coilovers so you can use a longer spring? If not you could is a dual rate spring or like you have now with a helper but the longer spring being soft and the shorter being hard.
    The car is looking awesome and you're doing a brilliant job, keep it going!

    Rallydesign do a weld on coilover kit. But you'd still need to sort dampers

    not as easy due to it being a welded unit but cant you do a similar mod to the t5 by cutting off the hub and relocating it further up the strut? you could also gain an inch or so by raising to top of the strut tower possibly?

    Hard to tell on the camera angle however will the front ARB flip round the other way? I.e left to right.
    That looks like it might buy you a bit more room between the manifold.
    Hard to tell from the cam angle so sorry if I’m barking up wrong tree.

    I found a 86c coupe (the real coupe version so long back)
    I asked the Guy if its for sale hé said not officially but if you give me 1500€ you can have it reckon its a good deal?
    I took a look at it the bottom is spotless! Only has 40k km on it its just really dirty
    Is there any worth in these?

    Hi Dan where are you based mate? I have a mk2f coupe GT and wanted to do 20v swap but I kinda wanna do the same as you. Wanna do mine she was my first car and been off the road for about 12 years

      Hi bud. Im Leicestershire. You will struggle to fit a 20v in a polo as the bay is so small. You would need to basically cut the front off the car and fabricate from scratch.

My car need body work it's a very low miles car but because stupidly I cut lips off the sills when I first started driving lol they want replacing really, want rear disc conversion aswell. So interesting watching your videos just makes me wanna crack on and throw some money at the coupe now. After having kids it's just sat there doing f all.
