well duhh, boxing is purely a striking sport while MMA is literally mixed martial arts, boxers don't have access to the range of styles available in mma so need to specialise usually in either speed or power (sometimes you get boxing legedns who are proficient in both Tyson, Ali, SRL etc). With mma You can go with speed or power in combination with bjj or wrestling. Tbh MMA is like rock paper scissors, except if paper was overpowered lol. Typically in a 1v1 grappling is superior to striking especially in mma. Put most boxer on there back and they are like deer in headlights lol they dont know what to do. Rock=striking paper=grappling/bjj scissor= slight combination of both kind of like combat bjj with stinking or sambo basically ground and pound. people who don't understand boxers hit harder don't watch enough combat sports. put Mayweather in the octogen and hes getting wrecked after a double leg. my favourite is when DJ suplexed a guy into an armbar. shit was ridiculous lool
Idk man it has to do a lot with the way they stand and move because they have to worry about kicks and takedowns. Different sports require different tools to be utilized is all.
Gerry McClellans sparring and training partners in previous camps said they saw his eyes twitch and blink uncontrollably on occasion after being hit before the benn fight, so there was possibly something neurological going on prior to that fight. such a heartbreaking story though if anyone hasn't seen the documentary on Gerald it's confronting and very sad. his family is amazing.
I think what Joe said that big heavyweights should have big refs is generally true. Having said that Mills Lane was probably the best ref ever and he was small but showed no fear (he also did 20 minutes of jump rope, 5 rounds of heavybag, and ran two miles a day so he would be in shape to move in fast...and when he started to slow down was when he retired from refereeing).
I remember him yelling at Tyson during the bite fight. Tyson saying that he didn’t bite Holyfield and mills says “BULLSHIT, 2 points off him” no fear or anything lol
Moments like Joe getting emotional talking about the Duk Koo Kim fight is why I keep watching. You aren't gonna get an unplanned genuine emotional response to the gravity of physical violence as entertainment and sport from a television program

@@Caesar-ww3yp to what a HS fight hahahaha...I wish this was back in the 80 's you can look up Jeremy Williams though heavyweight pro fighter guarantee he still training people an has a gym
The Kim fight definitely had a huge impact making it go to 12 round which in my opinion is devastating because those late rounds are literally the “championship rounds” for a reason. gerald mcclellan’s fight with nigel benn also put a lot of eyes on boxing and thank god for it. Ref’s and Doc’s are much better trained to see the implications of a shot fighter in the current era imo. No matter what it’s a very dangerous sport tho and I respect anyone who even laces up the gloves to either train or spar!
I think when a boxer's brain suffers a brutal knock out, after the fight the body does a full reboot, but like a video game energy bar, the brain governs down that energy cycle bar to a half-way mark to protect the boxer from himself. Some boxers are just too "Gladiator' for their own good, and doesn't know how (or care) to quit even though the internal organs are in distress.

After they had multiple fights in previous months Emille nd Parret .. Mercer said That Tommy was Hitting him so hard , he had him contemplating why is in the ring fighting.
I remember when Mohammed Ali fought past his prime and got the hell beat out of his brain. I remember, after Sugar Ray Leonard was smashed in the press for months that he danced so wonderfully in the ring, only because he couldn't take a punch, the one fight where Sugar Ray Leanard stood toe to toe with Roberto Duran (which Sugar won) and never talked the same again. I remember when Marvin Hagler went from a great speaker to a guy who could barely speak, after getting hit in the head over and over and over. There is a very high cost to this sport, yet it is the most basic sport of all time. Like Joe said, have a ref in there who is a match for both of the fighters. You can save a life that way.
Yep. People may say what they want about Mayweather, but he himself said it's about hitting and not getting hit yourself. If you could do that shit then you are the master of the sweet science. And even Mayweather doesn't have all of his brain cells but he's better than most and he got out before it got really bad. That's why it always makes me happy to hear George Foreman talk. When Sugar Ray Leonard stood toe to toe with Roberto Duran, I was almost in tears because Duran beat on Ray as hard as he could, and Ray refused to dance like he always did. Another brutal knockout was George Cooney vs Ken Norton. Cooney landed about 3-4 hard shots while Norton was out on the ropes. Even Ali said it was ugly. Edit: lol yes it’s Jerry Cooney. Thanks everyone.
I think you have George Cooney confused. Ken Norton took two extremely brutal KO's in his career - one was a 1st Rd. KO by Jerry Cooney and the other a 2nd Rd. KO by George Foreman that the ref had to stop the beating. But Norton also beat Ali and was sort of robbed in their second fight split decision and really robbed in their final fight at Yankee Stadium.

Same here. I had a buddy that was a very talented boxer growing up. We had a friend that we would take turns knocking out. I mean we sparred with him but he was a late bloomer. My buddy would knock him out at will. We thought that it was funny. Luckily, the kid that we used to knock out (and videotaped it), became a doctor. Use to box and train to compete in the Golden Gloves at Joe Frazier's first gym--23rd Police Athletic League in Philly in the late 60's early 70's when I was a student at Temple Univ. Parrett took this fight only after fighting 2 months prior
Gerald Mclelleans head injuries started from his matches with Julian Jackson. He took a ton of punishment from those and was even more out of whack leading up to the Nigel Benn fight.
The reasons why it's easier to get knocked out after a match you've been KO'ed in: 1. Aura of invincibility is gone. 2. Self-assuredness of never losing is also extinct. 3. Your opponents know your weakness(es) and are willing to exploit it (or them) like jackals. 4. Perhaps you overtrain after a loss to compensate, which makes you more susceptible to gassing out and getting tagged hard. 5. You can never get back what Father Time takes away.

What people do not understand is that boxers hit wayyyy harder than MMA guys. Makes all these clips so much more brutal when put in that context.
They hit harder, but they don't hit "wayyyy" harder.
well duhh, boxing is purely a striking sport while MMA is literally mixed martial arts, boxers don't have access to the range of styles available in mma so need to specialise usually in either speed or power (sometimes you get boxing legedns who are proficient in both Tyson, Ali, SRL etc).

Having said that Mills Lane was probably the best ref ever and he was small but showed no fear (he also did 20 minutes of jump rope, 5 rounds of heavybag, and ran two miles a day so he would be in shape to move in fast...and when he started to slow down was when he retired from refereeing).

Tua's KO of Ruiz was pretty brutal.
It greatly diminishes your motivation to train hard and to take damage, you will always think twice and hesitate once your hit bad after that.
Great comment.
I think this a great way of putting it. After each KO a person’s maximum health bar is diminished, so they can take fewer punches; less damage.

The fact that Roy was affraid of Gerald show what kind of boxer Gerald is.
The guy sounds just as good as he ever did as a Young Man. There's some people that's just made for boxing. They can give it as good as they get.

When Sugar Ray Leonard stood toe to toe with Roberto Duran, I was almost in tears because Duran beat on Ray as hard as he could, and Ray refused to dance like he always did. I saw an interview with Ray Mercer and he said that at the weigh in, Tommy’s back was all broken out in horrible acne. Ray then told his cornermen that Tommy had been using steroids, which turned out to be true, and they needed to rethink their strategy. He said that his cornermen said to take Tommy for as long as he could into the fight because the steroids were for short bursts of power, and they may not help him in the later rounds. I guess Ray was right.
So essentially Ray decided to tank shots from a roided guy to gas him out and then knock him out? If so, that makes Mercer an even badder motherfucker than I already though he was

Another brutal knockout was George Cooney vs Ken Norton. Cooney landed about 3-4 hard shots while Norton was out on the ropes. Even Ali said it was ugly.

I think you have George Cooney confused. Ken Norton took two extremely brutal KO's in his career - one was a 1st Rd. KO by Jerry Cooney and the other a 2nd Rd. But Norton also beat Ali and was sort of robbed in their second fight split decision and really robbed in their final fight at Yankee Stadium.

Gerald Mclelleans head injuries started from his matches with Julian Jackson. He took a ton of punishment from those and was even more out of whack leading up to the Nigel Benn fight.
The reasons why it's easier to get knocked out after a match you've been KO'ed in:
