      @CDRhammond 5 лет назад +23

      That is the down side of white faced hornets the only stinging insect more aggressive in defense of the nest would be killer bees. but despite their aggression these hornets can do a lot of good as they prey on insects like mosquito's and horse flies. I remember a few years ago we had a massive nest in a tree in our backyard but since it was in a area we never went to we let it be, that year we had no pest problems in our yard or house ;)

      @@CDRhammond Ya there crazy i had one chase me all the way around my house be for and it got me on the back just as i got to the door . they have the worst hit out of all bees/wasp/hornets in the usa that i know of or at least by all the diff ones iv been hit by.

    • @CDRhammond
      @CDRhammond 5 лет назад +4

      @@dewmonle3119 they can defiantly be nasty when they want to. that's why once I see a nest I give it a good 25-50 yard clearance depending on the size of it (bigger they are more space they tend to want) One thing I have seen at least with the ones in my area is they actually will give a warning by either buzzing someone or bumping into them without stinging or biting at first, if that tactic fails then like killer bees they swarm. by far the worst wasp/hornet sting I've been hit by in the US has been the mud dabber wasp that sting hurt for 3 days. Just be glad you don't live in south America think wasps hurt try dealing with a bullet ant they have the worst sting of them all when it comes to pain. It really does feel like being shot with a gun

    Fascinating: didn't know the larvae weave silk! Appreciate your admiration of them. Also your chicken pets and t-shirt. We had a beautiful huge hornet's nest outside our front door. They never bothered us or our shepherd as we came and went. Then my son came for a visit with his boxer who kept barking at the nest. They did not get along. It seems those wasps recognize different people. Here in Canada, they mostly die off in winter and never return to the nest, so I was able to spray and keep it. So amazing.

    Chickens are garbage disposals. I had one that took up at my house that looks just like Ginger. I named her ruby. But I really grew to love that chicken. Unfortunately, I didn’t know what to do with her and about the time I decided I wanted to keep her as a pet, coyotes got her. I cried for a month. I should have built her a coop but didn’t know who she belonged to. She just took up here. But they are super cool animals and by time I found where she was laying her eggs, it was too late. Coyotes found her. Still breaks my heart and I miss her.

    Amazing! I learned so much. I wondered how the cell got the cap on it and always assumed the workers did it. Incredible to see them weave!
    Bald face hornet nests have always fascinated me. The architecture is amazing!
    A good size nest came out of a tree during a windstorm this fall and of course I brought it in so my grandson ( who is 5 and scared to death of any flying insect/BEE) something had torn the nest open and cleaned it out. I don’t know how late in the season a nest is active. It was certainly interesting to see the layers of walls and how the branch was enclosed. And leaves were entrapped.
