Aokigahara (Jukai) isn't a swamp it's litterally just a forest right in the foot of mount fuji.
It maybe known as the suicide forest today but that wasn't the case until around the 70s after a famous book had the ending of the main character(s) commiting suicide in Aokigahara.
I'm not sure but the place doesn't have that much of a stature in mythology, but it's more parents telling their children stories of spirits, demons, etc. in the forest so that they don't venture into the forest and find a dead body or something.
As much as the forest is known for suicides it's still a heavy tourist destination because of the caves with in the area.

the people that the map is based on were real the weasel or Arlington, Billy handsome, Sal DeLuca, and fin O'Leary were real they killed the weasel because they could not agree on the plan and were all sentenced to death by the electric chair because they killed the weasel on the roof and they never successfully built the plane that is why there is a part were you can either kill Arlington again and repeat the cycle or Arlington kills the others and the cycle is broken and the guard they killed was also real the recordings on the map are real recordings from him
