So glad that Josephine is still in breeders ..
Word
And Jim...
All the females in bands in the 90s meant so much to me.
They were wearing clothes like me and rocking out like me. Their vices sounded like mine.
It gave me so much inspiration and I wrote a lot of good stuff then.
What about now?if You wish to reply...have a good day/night anyway.
👍👍👍
I wanna thank Kim and Kelly's parents for making these beautiful talented women. Been listening to them from the beginning. Keep it up!!!
YeH !!!
Yes, regards to their parents. MmmmHmmm
Josephine is hilarious in her no bs attitude. The full side eye etc when talkong about being lumped as a "girl grunge group". 😂 Then the Oscar Wilde quote! ❤ Love it.
I met Kim and Kelly in sf amoeba records they are the two most beautiful respectfully humble people I've ever met in the music industry.
yeah they are awesome. I have never talked to Kim (it's my dream!) but I have talked to Kelley and Josephine after a really small bar show in austin. they were cool
my band got to open for Kim's band once...and backstage she asked me for a cigarette and i do not smoke but my wife did at the time so i reached in and grabbed the cigs and there was only one left...I gave it to Kim...my wife got mad at me for giving away her last cig and i said, "when, Kim Deal ask me for a cig, I give her one"
Love hearing anecdotes like this. I totally idolize Kim Deal, but it’s stories like yours that make them seem more human. Less intimidating 😁
Great story! That would be a HUGE honor to me, to open for them!
I have to say that I was in the middle of making money and making my life and my 30s when the breeders were popular. But I was a music aficionado at a younger age and now at an older age I think they're amazing
Love the Breeders!
I LOVE YOU FOREVER KELLY!!!
I love Wiggs!
I saw them play at slims before Last Splash was released, I remember they played a brand new song for their upcoming album called The Invisible Man and the whole show Kelly kept fucking up, and would stop in the middle of songs, and let's make no mistake, Josephine is a fucking pro, and she had this look of "Come on Kim, what the fucking fuck?!" and Kim had this look of "I know, I'm sorry, she's my sister" - all that said it was a great fucking show, they played 2 shows back to back, some dude traded me to go in to the first show, and me and my friends watched that show from outside, then went in to watch it again and it still fucking rocked. I've seen them several times since and Kelley has obviously learned to keep up, seriously, one of those bands...if the come around GO, they NEVER disappoint
I saw them a couple times at Slims back then. What a great time it was for music.
We traded tapes in the 80’s, that was the only way to hear the Best new bands, I heard Driving on 9 on a tape, and it was so different from the other Breeders music, just like Exene singing Poor Little Critter in the Road by the Knitters, you couldn’t look this up in Wikipedia, or early 80’s Cure, EATB, the radio was playing hair metal bands for the masses. Kurt just caught the wave.
Holy shit there is a Dayton OH accent. She sounds exactly like Robert Pollard.
Keowee street looks like a West African town at night. The Pilot truck stop off 75 is in the ghetto. Dayton is an obtuse city
Josephine is good on the bass
Still believe the final decision of Kelley joining the Breeders came form Ivo of 4AD after listening to the Last Splash demo tape. Kelley’s playing style shares the same jagged edge sound of the label mates like Rema Rema, the Birthday Party and the Wolfgang Press. I could easily imagine Ivo likes Kelley as a guitarist.
Josephine is so cool
OMG spent so much time at McGuffy's. Nice shout out
Here comes your man is a great tune. Great harmonies.
That's PIxies
I love Kelley 💘
Kelley reminds me of the actress Catherine Keener! They look strikingly similar!!
Good call! Kelley looks great
Kelley has more angular feature and looks like Catherine Keener for sure. But it never occurs to me that Kim looks like her. I sometimes wonder they are fraternal twins, not identical or they began to look different as they age.
@@user-rh2csk Agreed. 👍
@@tribeshift thanks!
Kelley was in all guys band except her taking on the vocal…she even covered Boyd Rice song live. If you listen to Pod, it is noticeable they are influenced by British post punk rather than American all female bands at that time and Josephine’s contribution also made the album sound transatlantic. Besides, Kelley is hardly proficient but has the distinctive way of playing the guitar and that made them original. The Breeders are on another level and they shouldn’t be lumped in with the prefabricated grunge garbages catered to MTV.
Kelley didn’t play on Pod. She didn’t join the Breeders until the Safari EP. Tanya Donnelly of Throwing Muses/Belly was the original guitarist (the one on Pod).
@@colonialstraits1069 Yes, I know. Bought Pod when it came out. What I meant is Pod has more noticeable influence from British new wave and I am talking specifically about Josephine, Tanya, and Kim in that case. Kelley is into No Wave and noise rock.
@@colonialstraits1069 Pity that they sideline that fact, in this piece.
I think Josephine has heen holding that 1:16 for yeas. 😂
She burst into laughter even before Josephine started to talk.
Kelly is so cute!
The Deal sisters have to be related to Katherine Keener.
So fun to hear Kelley about all guys band now that she toured with Protomartyr ! 😂
Kim/Kelly so remind me of a female version of Andrew W.K. They look a like, they have the same kind of energy...it's uncanny. Also, they look like the lady from The 40 Year Old Virgin.
KIM DEAL IS THE MOST IMPORTANT FEMALE ROCKER IN THE WORLD.
Why?

It depends on what you mean by "boring". At a certain age both boys and girls are rather "predictable" - but assume that they are exciting. There is a lot to made of the Breeders being a female band - but their is a long history of female bands in ALL genres.

Although only a few all-female rock bands managed to strike major record deals with recording companies, a number of bands promoted their music independently at local gigs and concerts. As girl power reached dizzying heights through the '70s, suddenly the number of all female bands faded to oblivion in the '80s, with only a few making a major breakthrough with audiences. However, the punk scene in the '80s helped many female bands pave the path of success. Through the '80s and '90s, a significant number of all female bands emerged in the realms of mainstream rock, pop, and R&B, with many enjoying chart-topping success.

Question: What ever happened to Nickey Barclay from FANNY?
Answer: After leaving Fanny, Nickey Barclay released a solo album 'Diamond in a Junkyard.' She also wrote a song (Solid Gold) and played keyboards for Keith Moon on his 1976 album 'Two Sides of the Moon.' After Moving to the UK, she formed the Nickey Barclay Band in the 1980s with musicians Dave Ball, Wilgar Campbell, and Lou Martin. The band performed at venues in London.
Question: Why is the first question in an interview with female members of a band - "What's it like to be female members of a band?"
Media: Could the answer be that we are "predictable" and "boring".
As you can see the Breeders were not particularly special when it comes to being female - they however were good at creating catchy pop grunge tunes that those who liked Nirvana would also like as well.

I think he should have stuck with Mary Lou Lord. I like knowing there's a guitar out there that she gave to both Elliott Smith and Cobain.

Once gals became the forefront of indie rock,it became politically correct, safe, boring, and dull. Women aren't designed to be leaders. All of the "female bands" had 1 good LP then imploded. The term "Grunge" didn't exist until Jan 1992.
One thing the Breeders are not is dull and safe...and most grunge was depressing crap.
