Saw the pixies play when I was 15 years old at the Academy in New York City- had a huge crush on Kim then and still do now LOL. What a fucking cool woman. Saw her play with the breeders in Portland Oregon almost a decade later. So grateful that there are still people like this among Us who know who they are, know what matters to them and why and are not afraid to be that out LOUD. ♥️
I saw them when I was 14 at the old NY Coliseum on Columbus Circle opening for Nirvana. The only time I have seen Breeders. The sound at the old Coliseum sucked because it was way too loud in there but man Breeders put on a great show. Had a huge crush on Kim because of how she looked on the Safari video I had on an old VHS tape from an episode of 120 Minutes.
I adore Kim Deal, and all she’s accomplished! I enjoyed The Breeders as a teen! That said, I’m really disappointed as The Pixies is my favorite band of all time. However, I was a fan that bought several albums way back when. I still listen to the pixies every day. The older stuff, with Deal. Respecting people and their projects is super important… also respecting people when they say they don’t wanna talk about something is also important.
Excellent point about journalists reducing other projects by constantly bringing up the Pixies. And they were just a band. Often great, sometimes not at all. It's all subjective. Millions and millions of rock fans never bought a Pixies album... that said, great great interview!
But they weren't "just a band". Pixies caught lightning in a bottle and that's why old fans remain devoted and Gen Z kids slavishly imitate without success.
A month ago, I was talking to a friend of mine and I said “I kind of wouldn’t want to see the Pixies without Kim Deal”, so I googled The Pixies new bass player and Kim Shattuck came up, now I can’t stop listening to Kim Shattuck’s band The Muffs. They’re great! Unfortunately Kim Shattuck tragically died in 2019. Which is awful. This new chick, Paz, is technically good but I don’t think I’d go see the Pixies without Kim Deal being back in the band. I enjoyed the interview. I’m going to enjoy some Kim Deal and the Breeders now and Kim Shattuck and The Muffs.
It's so refreshing to hear someone as classy as Kim not piss and moan and blame everyone else, ie Courtney Love style. They may not have been close by the end but at least they respected each other and the band enough to not shit on their legacy.
I saw The Breeders first tour when they played The Masquerade in Atlanta in the early 90's. I went in blind. Never even heard of Cannonball yet. They blew my mind!!! I just wanted to see a band on a Saturday night back when ticket prices were not crazy and you could take a chance to discover fresh sounds.
She's a legend to me Pixies changed upped my love for music on a massive scale in the 80s and I love the dig at our press ( UK ) She's not wrong we have the most appalling press in the UK.
If artists don't wanna talk about something, respect their boundaries and back off. Unless you're doing investigative work and asking questions to hold some public official accountable, it's not your place to violate someone's integrity. #journalismethics
At 2:30 the song that starts in the background is "All I Think About Now", which was co-written and sung by Paz when Kim left the Pixies reunion. Does KD consider the song to be a respectful thank you, or would she be pissed that they chose that one song over any one of hers?
“A lot of (the ideas) were that guy ‘Spike Jonze’ that she works with, he helped, it was his idea.” it’s funny hearing Spike Jonze mentioned before anyone knew him
Yeah. That was cool. I did know of him then as I was 14 and an avid skateboarder here in NYC. His name appeared as director on the skating video, Video Days, and on skateboard magazines of the time. Also of course on the Sonic Youth video. He has a unique name. Easy to remember.
As a child/teenager you want bands to just keep going forever, but as you age and become an adult you take on an attitude that 2-5 years is a good, long time to be on a project, things get stale, then it's time to try other stuff. The bands that DO try to stay together forever end up making 30 years of stale material.
I know it may sound crazy to a lot of people but Kim deal is my 2nd cousin 2x removed and my grandma is 2nd cousins with her no times removed they even met at a family reunion when Kim was 19 they had a photo of it and everything
We already know what happened he didn’t want her in the band. She literally says that I think in a Canadian interview, I know she was just reduced to a sidemen at the end of it.
Richard Kingsmill is the most cringe interviewer, it's a massive shame he has the experience and influence he does, years of ruining interviews to inflate his ego as a journalist and music director.
Charles didn't want to do solo stuff, he wanted Kim out of the band because she thought that she should sing lead on more songs and was being disruptive. She's a backup singer and he's a first class songsmith and a great lead singer.
The Breeders is proof that her talent was wasted with the Pixies. And there was nothing stopping Charles from continuing the band without Kim, instead he chose to do a solo career. Yk it's possible to like both of them as artists without shitting on the other
@@90sArchive I never liked her and hated her lead vocals. I mean she was hot and was a great backup singer but her time in the Breeders is precisely what solidified to me that she is vastly overrated.

Kim was very classy about the whole break up.
I’ve been blessed to see Pixies twice with Kim in the band, the first show in 1992 and the last on the reunion tour in 2004.
I was there at Coachella to see them.
Saw them in 1988.Frank broke a string and threw the guitar at the roadie.
She is simply too clever and good hearted.
I think Deal is a brilliant person. She is odd, but that is part of being an artist who is genuine.
You are THE Breeders archivist and I appreciate all that you post!!! Especially interviews and there don’t seem to be a lot of them. Thank you!!!!
Kim Deal is so lovely ♥
I remember listening to this at the time. Big fan of Richard Kingsmill and an even bigger fan of Miss Deal. Takes me back.
I've since uploaded the full interview:

Pixies are boring, breeders are better

Talking about another legendary bassist. Paz Lenchantin is incredible in her own right
@@Woozy.0 But she's not Kim and she will never fill the Kim-sized-hole, because it is chasm that cannot be bridged.
@Ikem Is Cancelled whoa there buckaroo, I'm not arguing that! Paz still rocks though!
@@Woozy.0 Yea. Did you see her performance with the band doing "Gouge Away" on the BBC? She's wonderful.

Arguably the coolest woman ever
Kim is a total badass. An amazing musician.

Kim is right.

30 freaking years ago!
great stuff, thanks! nice artwork too
Chillbumps x
I find it strange that this is my first time hearing her talking voice. Damn, I was born in 95 and I grew up on her music in my childhood.
The interviewer makes me embarrassed to be Australian - and I'm not even Australian.
Ah nah man he’s being pretty cool they’re vibing
You were my favorite bass player ever

i have a 3 hour breeders radio special from triple j, ive offered it to you to upload.

she is the aunt I want.

Kim deal Kim Gordon Kim Shattuck.cool as fuck bassist's.
Too bad they never formed a band called The Kims

I wish Deal were on camera because I think she is really attractive.
thanks we were all really curious whether you find kim deal attractive or not
Saints
Well Charles is quite a bit more than the "lead singer", while talking 'bout reducing things or bands or people ...
Both Black and Kim try not to talk about but nobody stips asking lol
What song is that at 2:23
All I Think About Now by Pixies. It's a song dedicated to Kim (after she left)
