Was working at the Minneapolis Air Port back in 2015 and Black Francis happened to buy a couple things from my stand. Had no idea who he was until watching Fight Club a few months later and started listening to Where Is My Mind on repeat. He had given me a business card a long with a 20 dollar tip and just so happened to keep it in my wallet and realized exactly who I had a brief conversation with. Crazy experience. I think he liked the fact that I had no idea who he was but would figure it out and appreciate it in time. Solid real human being
Found this interview so refreshing. I enjoyed that Charles for the most part wanted no part of this but a few times was drawn in to the conversation and made some salient comments. Love his honesty frankly that he dislikes doing media. Not many in his line if work would ever be as up front for fear of tampering with their bands brand. I like down to earth people that just happen to have unique skill sets that put them in this space where some dont feel confortable. This adds another layer of why I enjoy The Pixies music. It somehow fuses their music with what I imagined him to be like. more of this please.
Charles is a one in a billion kind of talent. All these stunning evergreens about UFO's and this weird place, they've just been pouring out of him for a solid 35 years. LEGEND
18:30 - "no i'm not playing the...whatever, I'm playing my opera right now" is exactly what you hear him say to the audience a few times on the Black Francis Live In Nijmegen album. Love it, he clearly says they're going to play the full new Bluefinger album, which is a rock opera about Dutch artist Herman Brood, and people keep calling out to play where is my mind or debaser or whatever, and he keeps saying "no, the rock opera. op-er-a!" Great stuff, check it out.
In 2004 I saw the Pixies in Barcelona lost in the middle of thouzands of fans... In 2017 I saw them in Carcassonne... small french city... small amphithéâtre... the VIP seat were not sold and I and my friends were allowed to take it ... I met Francis and his wife and sons in the streets eating an Ice cream... I took a picture with him. Unforgetable day ! Defenitly my favorite band!
It’s always a bummer when you’re a huge fan of a band/artist and then you see an interview like this and realize how burnt out or tired they are of songs that mean so much to you lol
At 5:57 man, that wink was so creepy and unnecessary, or even 'unnecessarily creepy'. Great interview though! Frank is so interesting to listen to he made this half-hour flew away. Gotta love this man
@@patclafferty That's not really the interviewer's fault though. He actually managed to make Frank feel at ease during this. Frank's definitely an introvert, perhaps an INTJ, and INTJs sometimes avoid eye contact because, for them, maintaining it during conversations can feel quite uncomfortable or even unnecessary.
@@youreallygotmenow4855 Interviewer came across as unfamiliar with Charles work or even how serious and intellectual he is ...like all happy clappy radio jock and that wink...just wrong !
Charles is a nice person. He's very talented and a well respected musician.. I hope he hits it really big one day. Hits it big in the way he wants to hit it big.
So Frank, can you tell all your fans how you got started in music ? .. Frank - " Well I don't know, you know .. whatever, you know " .. Great bloke, very down to earth.. no fakery.
Pure is the Pixies. I would like if the Frank Black/Pixies dichotomy was smashed and he played a few Frank Black songs in his Pixies gigs going forward. Pong? Western Star etc
Oh exactly. When you play your last song, without announcing 'this is the last song' you then exit leaving your audience wanting more. That wanting is part of the experience. Some things are just so cliched.
Definitely would’ve loved something more interesting, minus the fluff. Questions about Velouria story, or questions about why he likes guitar models from the 50’s, questions about how dynamics may have changed among the members of the band over the years… geez, anything more than ‘Do you still enjoy the songs every night?’… 🤷🏻♂️
I wonder who Charles would find interesting to talk to. He is a relatively intellectual guy. Not just smart but interested in ideas. sponging up tons of information. And with an amazing sense of humor. Someone with better chemistry with him could get him onto some more interesting ground. Granted: no offense to Tom, it's not that easy and especially on the fly

You get the feeling these days that Charles is figuratively being propelled down a freeway in a comfy leather armchair - flipping through the channels of his back catalogue. There is a certain sense of resignation and world weary apathy when it comes to the BIZ ... I'm amazed he still bothers, but then - there are always bills that need paying.
almost everything the interviewer said had a snide little jab and was meant to put a legendary artist on the spot, I'd much rather have listened to what Black Francis wanted to talk about in the moment instead of on speaking points mostly about the daily grind of putting something like a Pixies show on.
He (and the Pixies) have/had some really good songs. a lot more merely tolerable songs, and a lot of downright annoying songs as well. He comes off as being fairly egotistical here, and the interviewer is just sucky lame-o. I don't care how intellectual New Englander sir Charles is, he comes off as a bit doooshy. Basically, they both seem like a couple a doooshmen, and this is a fairly awkward interview. $20 tip? Why? I would imagine Black Francis can walk pretty much anywhere without getting recognised
Glad we can confirm that he’s real

i love how their sets go song to song no breaks. its a pixies tsunami
Thats like how they tracked Doolittle
do they play the old songs mainly or do they mix in the new ones`?
Just like Hüsker Dü did. Song after song with a max 1 min break every once in a while
Got that from albini
A wave of mutilation, if you will
I would love to hear a conversation with him and an interviewer who is closer to his wavelength. Good dude.
The Tony Hawk interview is pretty good
I just love him
Right?
Hes the man

No, he loves music/performing. He’s tired of sh1tty interviewers.
Can't even watch this because of the interviewer jeez
tbf it was a bummer when they played a snippet of the song as well so we can't just pretend that's not the same guy that made good music one day
The first live concert I ever saw was The Pixies at the Col Ballroom in Davenport IA. I was so blessed to be able to attend.
Would love to hear Rick Beato go over Frank's first 3 solo albums. IMO his best stuff.
why the f do you care about what rick beato's opinion?

Great interview. I loved the flow of the conversation and that pigment on a stick statement!
Wow Charles talking is always hypnotic. I love it.
That's the same feeling I got.
He's refreshingly honest and an engaging conversationalist.
I got lucky time wise doing College Radio in Boston and seeing The Pixies with 30 other people at TT the Bears.
I saw them too at the time with the dame amount of people. Also, at The Rat and Green Street Station.

Enjoyed this interview on many levels
Great interview, on both sides
Charles’s ability to step on stage and blow people’s faces off is uncanny. I play alternative music, but I could never measure up to the best.
Would love to see his paintings.
I saw the pixies twice this summer august 2023 nyc pier 17 and bridgeport conn they were GREAT
