if you lock the transparency of a layer, you can fill the layers pixels with any color you desire. it will stay the same level of opacity no matter what you do. you can even do a gradient over that layer to make the shadows more saturated and light towards the light source and darker and greyer away from it, giving the art and extra level of depth with little effort!
This was an amazing dissection, and the piece you created was amazing. I can't wait to see where you go with your art if you're saying you're 'lacking knowledge'
7:31 Other comments have already suggested methods but there’s another way that might or might not be a bit more like what Rinotuna is doing in photoshop. It’s a bit much to explain at first but once you’ve done it you’ll see it’s dead simple. Basically, you can tint an entire layer any color you want, non-destructively (the layer’s original color is preserved and the effect can be reversed in one click) using an Effect in Layer Property. I think it’s similar to the Convert to Drawing Color technique but I’m not sure of all the differences because I basically use this instead of that. To do this, there’s a button all the way to the right of the top row of buttons (the one with the lighthouse in it) in your Layer tab. You’ll need to widen your layer tab to reveal it. It’ll look like a primary/secondary color selection thing, two stacked squares. By default the primary one is blue and the sub color is white and when you click it, it’ll tint your entire layer non-photo blue. Now obviously you want to adjust this color. To do that, you’ll need to add the Layer Property tab to your workspace. Find the Window drop-down menu at the top of your CSP uhhh… window, and check Layer Property. I keep my Layer Property tab nested with my Layer tab so it’s out of the way whenever I’m not using it but stick yours wherever you feel like it should go. Now that you have the layer color effect activated, you’ll find a swatch of that color next to the label ‘Layer color’ under the Effect heading in the Layer Property tab. Clicking on this swatch will bring up its own Color Setting window, where you can access your color wheel, sets, history, whatever method you want to use to set the color the layer is tinted to. Oh, also there’s a button to activate the layer color effect in the Layer Property tab in case you don’t want to widen your Layer tab to reveal the button there. It looks similar (stacked squares) and is also the one all the way on the right. Two quick tips for using this technique: • I recommend painting in black on any layer you plan on tinting with the layer color effect. You’ll get the most predictable results this way. For the workflow you’re using here, you would tint the layer gray before you start painting shadows and then you’d pick black as your paint color - the end result will still come out whatever shade of gray you set as layer color. Any color that is not black will just give you a more faded value of that color. When it comes time to change the color of that layer it’ll be super easy because you already have the layer color effect active on that layer and you can click through different color options and see the results instantly before committing. • If you want to go back into a layer that has the layer color effect applied and fine tune just parts of it - shift the colors here and there - it won’t show up the way you want as long as the effect is active. No matter what color you use in that layer, it’ll all get tinted the layer color. You will have to right click on the layer and apply Rasterize. The Rasterize function in CSP does more than the name implies. In addition to converting vector layers and smart objects into bitmap, it also deactivates effects by baking them into the layer. Afterwards you can lock transparency if you want and paint whatever color you like on the layer and those colors will now show up as normal.
Thank you so much!!! I can't wait to try your tips soon!! I think I've seen this trick, prolly it's about masking... I actually figure this out when trying to make the thumbnail for this video ahaha... but now that u mention it, THIS MIGHT REALLY WORKS!.. Thank you so much once again for the thorough explanation... I'm so grateful!
Jajaja I love the pain in your voice when you made small but costly mistakes, it's how my whole internal monologue sounds when I try to do digital art 😂
Hi there! a follower of Jesus here as well! In fact, I made it this far, all thanks to Him alone :')... thank you for the support tho, and yesss in my early script, there was a lot of ranting and pain in my voice, but I decided to cut em out... I thought people would hate it, but from your comment I know that this is actually a thing 😂. Once again, thank you so much, and God Bless you!!
@@marsbar77 Thank you! I just find another comment disliking the way I expressed it, but yours is what I am going to hold on to! I just feel this way is more "human" you know 😂😂... in a sense that, we can relate and I can have a deeper engagement with all of you.
@@Inolicious. There will always be someone saying something negative, I am actually using your video on my current piece to try and learn how to colour more efficiently, I am far below you and Rinotuna's skill level though so it's going to take some time.. 😅
I've been watching your content, and it inspired me to continue drawing, and I like your music. It has this "cafè'ish" and daily life feeling to it. I hope you continue doing what you do. Much love from Korea 🇰🇷
I usually change the color in one layer using "Convert to drawing color". It's under "Edit" menu. Since I use it often, I just make custom keyboard shortcut for it. How to use it: select the layer, then choose the color you want, press the shortcut button and done. It's also work for area selected using lasso or magic wand.
Amazing analysis, definitely learned a lot as someone who is new to this. Your illustration is gorgeous, also huge props to the man himself Rinotune for making such great illustrations.
Hi , thanks for the turtorial . I saw this guy , who you mentioned in a video (Rinotuna) from a trimmed stream that someone post on youtube and had no idea who he is , since his skill are amazing I wanted to learn something about him altho my style and him are not the same , I was stunned by the fact his style are simple but yet effective , this video telling me who he is and I'm grateful about that. I'm still training on my art career way , I hope your path are smooth too.
Hello! Glad you enjoyed it! For me, his style is beyond simple, and superb detailed.. he is an amazing artist indeed! 😁I hope the best for your art career too! Let's support each other as best as we can do!
Thank you very much for breaking down the painting progress! I always wanted to draw like Rino but didn't know were to start. Again thanks for your help! :)
Eh? Did Rino really say this 🤣.. tho my eye and hair style isnt the same as his. I only want to learn the way he colors, not the way he draw the shapes tho 😁
My favorite part of this video weren't all the great tips, but all the cute animal memes and every time you'd start singing haha! I adore the vibes you have, thank you for sharing your experience, now I feel very inspired to try some of these techniques myself :D
So this is basically "i try to do Rino's style, but i take EXTRA, MANY EXTRA steps" For step 6, it's way more easy than you think. CTRL+Click on the thumbnail of Layer 5, this will select the shadows in this layer, then press CTRL+SHIFT+i to revert the selection (So anything that isn't covered by the shadow layer is selected instead, in this case, the lights), then simply fill the selection and you will have the same result.
Heya! Thanks for the input, I've taken similar tips from others too, thank you so much this will help a lot! And btw, Rino's steps are even more extra than what I have shown 😂.. there was a video, where he spent 10 hours only on a single character. But yeah, some of the hassles you see in the video come from me not knowing what he did, so if you're calling that as the extras, you're totally right! ahaha
So my way of doing the full color change is I have a shortcut set for clips [change line color] I have it set to a random tab on my keyboard so I can do it in one click So all I do is pick the color I want go to the layer I want hit the key and done ✔️
Your videos are very amazing, we can see the love and effort put into it; i have learned a lot just watching like 2 of your videos thank you they are very educational. Would love to see more of them often.
just a tip: when you finish a painting you can tweak colors with gradient maps, it makes it have a more cohesive and soft hue shiftsyou have to use them sparingly and with a airbrush tho since it would get too chaotic too fast
Thank you! I've been trying for the past few days to match the way this dude was coloring things just by guessing lol. This is very helpful and good timing too!
I've wanted to sit down and watch his full process video for a while but just couldn't commit to those hours. But this has been so informative and helpful! I've learned a lot just from watching you learn and break his process down. Thank you for making this video :)
THAT'S EXACTLY WHAT'S ON MY MIND! When I look up for tutorials about Rinotuna, I find 0 videos! So instead of waiting, I really tell myself "Let me do it instead!" 😂. Thank you so much! I'm glad you find this helpful, even tho there are still a lot of imperfections 😅
This is such an informative video and great breakdown! Love to see how other artists work! Your illustration turned out beautifully!! Love the design and the colors! At 14:18 i wanted to mention as a CSP user, I'm not sure if it got mentioned by others already, but you can extend the fill tool to also go underneath the lineart. An option you can enable is "area scaling" and you can increase or decrease the amount so then the fill can extend past the lineart. I also recommend working with aliased (hard edge) so you don't get a "halo" when selecting from your flats layer. I used to draw and fill like Rino did but when working with so many details it's so much more efficient to turn on reference layer and fill. Keep up the good work!
Wow thank you so much! I will try your input soon... Btw the one you mentioned about "hard edge", I don't quite get it... should I do the line art with higher opacity brush or is it a feature? 😅
@@Inolicious. The option is anti-aliasing! You can definitely lineart still with brushes with “soft” or feathered edges, but for flats it’s good to decrease anti aliasing until the point you’re working with essentially pure pixels :3 when you zoom in it should look like pixel art. Like I said it eliminated that halo effect when coloring and shading based on flats.
I applied all the steps you mentioned, but the result is very wonderful ✨✨😭. I did not expect in my life that I would draw like this. Thank you very much for explaining all the steps.✨✨💖
I adore rinotuna artstyle. somehow, from your video- i manage to learn something. thank you! I might want to try a few things from this video. thank you so muchhh

God this video is amazing! I learned so much from this, even though I wasn't the one drawing. Side note, but the way you pronounce words sounds really nice, I can't explain why. ❤

Thank you for breaking this down so simply for us. Your finished piece was amazing, keep doing what you're doing!
Thank you so, so, so much!! 😄 That's what happened to me too! I recently found out about him in January... and when I look for tutorials on RUclips (since I am yes.. broke xD)... I couldn't find any video. So I just make 1 myself! ahahah...
8:00 i have a method that is i use folder to shade by changing mode to ultiply. In that folder contain base shade layer, and upper it i duplicate base color layer, click ctrl+U and adjust saturation to max. Then i change layer mode to color and adjust the opacity to make it suitable. The function of that color mode layer is to make the shade not too pale. And i usually i add brightness mode layer (from duplicated base color without ctrl+U) below the color mode layer to make some adjusment since the shade of dark color is different with lighter color.
i love his style but i ended up frustrated on following his style and i just take what it needed to do on my illustration. LOL. Very impressive you can reach and achieve from his step by step illustration.
I love this type of content! Your art looks very nice (well, for me it's gorgeous, but I'm a newbie), keep up your good work! Thank you very much for the video!
This is a great video man! Would love to see more of your content! I was always fascinated by Rinotuna's art process, especially how he designed characters!
Thank you for your kind words! I mean... I don't draw like this often 😂.. my daily sketches are very messy as well! Don't be afraid of being messy, sometimes you'll get the best & dynamic poses when you are just chilling and sketching up a lot of mess! 😄
Thank you so much 😊! I think art style is a mix of a lot of things you like! In these terms, I like the way Rinotuna colors his art... so I tried to learn that. But I still keep my core intact, the way I drew the eyes for an example, is nothing like Rinotuna.
I learned so much from the video! And I absolutely ADORE your art!! I'm also not very CSP-literate so you explaining everything step-by-step helps a lot! I will be subscribing from now on and will be with u on the long run to improve my art :> i cant wait for more of your videos!
I just stumbled upon your video and I have to say, it's my first time watching your content and I'm already hooked:)) Your reactions to the art are so relatable haha, and I can't help but feel the same way whenever I come across something beautiful.
I know right? 😂.... It crunches my heart, and made me want to train hard myself. But sometimes it's so overwhelming when you compare your current state to the pros, so I don't really do that often... only for certain artist that I do really admire! And thank you so much for the words, you are a kind person! 😄😄
great video, you broke down the steps really well and i think your attempt turned out great! i'm definitely gonna use some of these techniques on something in the future!
CSP user here, if you want to change the color of a whole layer you can go to the Layer Property panel, then Effects > Layer Color! That or you could use a gradient map layer to give some variation
Great!!! Others also told me that you can do it by going to edit>convert to drawing color! There are so many shorter ways, and I'm glad you are giving me tips about it. It's a fun thing to discover these tricks! Thank youu!! 🥰

@@Maki_H115 I am working on it! It's another learning video, with a lil bit of character intro in the end. Tho that character intro is what actually took a lot of my time prepping this vid :')
Aloo if anyone is struggling with working with the opacity of the grayscale shading and ends up with the gray spots he ended up with: you can just enter the edit tab and select "transform brightness to opacity" That way you don't need to worry about opacity changing brushes and you can just colorpick different grays ;)
I wish I could sub more than once lmao, great video man, thanks a lot. And I am so in love with ur illustration, especially the character design. I can't comprehend how one can be so creative. I mean I do a shit ton of drawing and painting myself, but getting cool design ideas is just so hard for me :((
Aw thank you so much!!! I think the key to creativity is practice! You'll need to taste many flavors to come up with an idea of your ideal flavor, right? Let's keep on practicing! Use as many references as you want!
great video! aside from some things you need to learn that made me scream at the screen lol but we all start somewhere, also i think all the steps from 9-12 count as one, rendering! thats where the magic happens if you paint
Great video, very useful! Also you don't have to use the technique that rino used at 14:09, instead (in CSP) you could select the areas you want to fill in on the lineart layer (like you already did) and then click the "expand selection" option, this could save you some time so you don't have to manually trace the areas you want to fill in!
My color filling process used to be like Rinotuna's, but it was SO BORING untill I found faster way and it's actually your way! You just need to lower your lineart opacity and color arias that you didn't fill. I also use layer for each color and you can paint under some colors without selection and it will still be nice under your lineart. You can also put it on some effect (It was linear something??) right away and see how good your colors and fix it! Again, Rinotuna's way was exactly the way I did this, but it was too slow, so here is new way with same effect.
Dia menguasai style yang berbeda beda karena dia tahu anatomi manusia untuk mendesain karakter. Konsepnya seperti karikatur yaitu pemilihan bentuk yang sesuai dengan masih mempertahankan keseimbangan estetik tubuh

This video is pure gold ! Thank you so much ^^
Your comment is also pure gold for me, thank youu! 🥰
@@Inolicious. It really is a thing, it makes it so relatable especially for those of us who really struggle! Great video, thanks! 😊
@@marsbar77 can't wait to see it!! 😁😊😊
I've been watching your content, and it inspired me to continue drawing, and I like your music. It has this "cafè'ish" and daily life feeling to it. I hope you continue doing what you do.
Much love from Korea 🇰🇷
Your comment means a lot to me! Thank you so much, and yeah.. I will try my best to keep it up!
THIS is exactly what i need to know! Thank you so much!!! 😭😭
Amazing analysis, definitely learned a lot as someone who is new to this. Your illustration is gorgeous, also huge props to the man himself Rinotune for making such great illustrations.
Glad it was helpful! 😄😄
You're welcome! Your comment also gives me the motivation to keep on exploring more stuff! Thank you! 😁😁
"he stole my whole style, line for line, bar for bar."
-Rinotuna
April 2023
Ahahah thank you so much! Glad u like the memes and singing xD... 🥰🥰🥰
So this is basically "i try to do Rino's style, but i take EXTRA, MANY EXTRA steps"
For step 6, it's way more easy than you think.
But yeah, some of the hassles you see in the video come from me not knowing what he did, so if you're calling that as the extras, you're totally right! ahaha
So my way of doing the full color change is I have a shortcut set for clips [change line color]
I have it set to a random tab on my keyboard so I can do it in one click
So all I do is pick the color I want go to the layer I want hit the key and done ✔️
Oho interesting! Thanks for the tip I will give it a try! 🥰
your video is supper funny to watch, hope you make more content like this. Super amazing to see people falling in love with Rinotuna arts.
Rinotuna is amazing! and also, thank you so much for the compliments! I hope I can share as much as I could along this art journey!
Thank you so much! Tho mine isn't 100% accurate, at least we can learn something from this attemp 🤣, and I'm glad it helps you!
Thanks, I love rinotunas art and this video was very helpfull for me
I'm so glad! He is a huge inspiration for me as well! Looking forward to uncover more secrets from him ahaha
Aww, glad it is helpful for you! Me too, it works wonders!!

Wow, this video comes at such a convienent time. I've recently discovered Rinotuna, and have been wanting to see his process, but honestly I was too lazy to watch the lives and too broke to buy the course, LOL. Thank you for breaking this down so simply for us. Your finished piece was amazing, keep doing what you're doing!
Thank you so, so, so much!! 😄
That's what happened to me too! I recently found out about him in January... and when I look for tutorials on RUclips (since I am yes.. broke xD)... I couldn't find any video. So I just make 1 myself! ahahah...
that's a pretty based way to do line art
man doesn't need to sketch it in, he needs one shot and then add weight later
absolute madlad
Yeah, Rino sure is a madlad 🤔🤯
8:00 i have a method that is i use folder to shade by changing mode to ultiply. In that folder contain base shade layer, and upper it i duplicate base color layer, click ctrl+U and adjust saturation to max. Then i change layer mode to color and adjust the opacity to make it suitable. The function of that color mode layer is to make the shade not too pale. And i usually i add brightness mode layer (from duplicated base color without ctrl+U) below the color mode layer to make some adjusment since the shade of dark color is different with lighter color.
Interesting! Thank you for the suggestion, I will try that soon!
i love his style but i ended up frustrated on following his style and i just take what it needed to do on my illustration. LOL. Very impressive you can reach and achieve from his step by step illustration.
Finally something about rinotuna
I mean,.. yeah He's amazing!! 😄

thank you! great video! makes me reflect on my messy drawing progress and how i should do it differently
Thank you for your kind words! I mean... I don't draw like this often 😂.. my daily sketches are very messy as well! Don't be afraid of being messy, sometimes you'll get the best & dynamic poses when you are just chilling and sketching up a lot of mess! 😄
Thanks for the effort , you did great.
I think you are capable to find your own style , we rather have u as yourself and rinotuna as himself 😊

Glad you like it! Let's keep on drawing! 😤😤
7:02 my guess is that he color picked and fill ( alt + del ) and because the layer was locked, it only filled the shadow and not the whole layer
Yep it's true! He used transparency lock on that layer 😄
After watching something like this there's no way i can leave without a like and subscribe! Thank you for sharing this video, it motivated me alot:)
Aw... thank you so much! Your comment also motivates me a lot! Let's keep the grind on!!

Ganbatte!! You can do this! and also, thank you so much! 😁
Aloo if anyone is struggling with working with the opacity of the grayscale shading and ends up with the gray spots he ended up with: you can just enter the edit tab and select "transform brightness to opacity"
That way you don't need to worry about opacity changing brushes and you can just colorpick different grays ;)

Yup, many people want to be like Rinotuna like me 🥺
Who wouldn't? He is amazing 😂, and YOU are amazing! 😁
It's good seeing my guy getting 42k views yessss
Ahaha thank you!!
Wooo great tips! I will definitely try it! Thank you so muchhh 🥰🥰
Oho!! This is interesting indeed!! Oh my,.. can't wait to try it out myself. Thank you so much for the tips!!! 🥰🥰🥰
