Excellent video and thank you for inviting me to film for you! It was very educational to see how leather is made right in front of your eyes.
It’s great to see a company NOT optimizing efficiency in an effort to stay true it’s craft.
If only more companies would do this, this country really needs to get back doing this, instead of importing everything cheap and low quality.
True, I've got an old vornado fan from the 50's or 60's that is still running strong. A fan from today 60 years from now probably won't still be working.
Great vid. Very good detail that isn't often seen. A small couple gripes: While we do correct grain on some leathers, many are not. For example, we sell a large amount of veg-tanned Essex and Dublin, baseball glove, and Latigo. All of which are full grain. The olive tanned leather is tanned using olive tree leaves (not olive oil) which are a renewable resource.
Awesome! Absolutely loved this.
Same! Loved it too!
Loving all the behind the scenes footage. Heritage and craftsmanship needs to be a larger factor in deciding where we spend our money. Thank you for adding some of that back into menswear!
Totally agree with that statement. Americans and people in general need to start paying attention to how they spend and what and where their money is spent and used for.
27 years @ Eagle Ottawa Leather Grand Haven. I was a "Swabber" on the Speco Machine & operator. tough Job, Murder on the fingers & Back. EOLC got out of Side Leather(PTL!!) I loaded and pulled the paddle wheels( those were gone PTL) I loaded & unloaded the Canbar Mixers 6. of them. I made the "New car" Smell AKA Aroma. I even did the "Roller Jack "and 24' buffer
I did many of the jobs shown there. We concentrated on automotive leather. The Grand Haven Tannery closed in 1986 three years after I left. EOLC is now Lear.
Wow I loved this video Jon ! Great job
Now that was awesome. Thanks for doing this. They are the BEST remaining American leather company. I will continue to support makers who use their leather.
Fantastic vid. Carl, great film work!
Fascinating stuff! Makes me think of the glory days of America when we used to make all of our own stuff! Just got my Higgins Mill boots and this video makes me appreciate them even more!
Makes me want to go buy some shoes/boots to support this home grown legend. Thanks for bringing this to my attention
My Aero (made in Scotland) A-2 Bomber jacket is made of Horween cordovan color front quarter horsehide. It is the best leather jacket I have ever owned (over 7 years). It's one of my truly prized possessions. I wear it almost every day in cool and cold weather. I get compliments and questions about it all the time. People love the color. They frequently ask to touch it to feel the quality of the leather. I'm in the Chicago area and when I tell them the leather is tanned in Chicago, they are surprised.
This video and your Allen Edmonds video are some of the most well done informational/documentary style videos I’ve seen. The flow is amazing! Thanks and great work
Thank you Quentin! Just the start as I see it... practice makes perfect!
Great video. Makes me happy to see so much effort go into the craftsmanship of great footwear!
Excellent vid. So informative!!!⭐️
So i used to work for a Tannery in Berkeley Ca. Manasse Block Taning Co. We did try to compete with you you folks at that time. mid 70s to early 80s. Sadly do to many factors we closed in 1985. I continued worked in the industry for another year in Napa instill they closed in 1986. Really glad to see some working working tanneries in this country.
That was really cool. Loving these vids!
Outstanding video. Excellent review is a very famous leather maker.
I love when you dive into the business side of things
This was great. Horween is known and I love that they are still in Chicago.
Awesome video! Thanks for featuring a great Chicago company!
This is a terrific video. Will be buying my next Allen Edmonds shoes in shell cordovan. Informative and interesting. Big fan of your channel.
Incredibly excellent video. And the beard is back! So much better than the mustache
I just received a pair of Alden's Longwing Bluchers in Color 8 Shell Cordovan. Wow, just wow. This leather really is a marvel to behold. Simply amazing.
Wonderful video. Educational and right to the point. 10/10. Proud to be a Allen Edmonds horween boot owner
Great job showcasing an American icon of industry. I think I wear my AE Dalton Shell Cordovan boots tomorrow.
Thank you! I've noticed that you had refrained from wearing Horween leather shoes to the Horween factory. I would've been tempted to wear my shells.
Was a little late to this vid jon but this was soooo cool! The other John seemed cool and really charismatic even though we didn't hear him lol - horween is def the best of the best and I think as much as it behooves them to change their recipes and efficiency for sentimental reasons, the product is simply the best out there. Well, I like SB Foot too haha
A fascinating look at the processes used by a company producing quality products.
Very well done. Great presentation. Only one point for clarification....After the initial chrome tanning, I believe Horween treats the leather to a second, vegetable tanning, process. This re-tanning, and it's hot oil stuffing process, that gives CXL its distinctive properties.
Good being the scenes review.
Very interesting and educational. Lot of focus on boots, basketballs and footballs. Horween produces some of the best leather jackets on the planet along with shinki. I'd like to see more on that aspect.
Nice job
Great video
Bravo Jon!!
Thank you Jordan!
Wow thank you
Always wanted to go to horween for a tour, congrats man. Do they offer tours to the public?
We still call it Sears tower here in Chicago
He wears his leather jacket to a leather factory!!! 👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Very educational.
I am here to serve
I love Thursday Boots, and now I know where they get their leather. 👍
Some of it. They have “Thursday Chrome” which is their version of Chromexcel. The boots that use Chromexcel are labeled on the website.
Only one model of their boots comes in Horween leather options. Most they do themselves, but it is similar to chromexcel.
Well done...
Thank you!
Love it.
Wish I could get that smell as a candle!
Jon, You mentioned all leather is corrected to some extent. Could you please expand on that? Would the ChromeXL used by AE for their Higgins Mill boot be corrected? I have always thought that corrected grain leather is inferior.
Corrected grain leather is sometimes inferior, but all it really means is it is sanded to make it look uniform and perfect. It isn't inferior by definition, but a leathermaker could hide imperfections easily by correcting the grain.
thats cool
Do you have a mtm shirt round-up?
awesome
So what's better quality, suede or nubuk? Interesting
Nubuck has more of the original grain, so it is more durable. Quality is more than just durability, though. Typically it goes Full Grain > Top Grain > nubuck > suede > "genuine leather." But suede is it's own look.
Where do they get their hides from? Are they American?
Wooooooow
You should get your facts straight, There are numerous leather tanneries older then Horween, especially European leather or Herman oak leather in the USA since 1881! You did do a decent job of an overview on what they do, but could of sold their product a little more by explaining the tanning concept better. But don’t make statements that are not true and easily check.
Like first. Watch second.
Enjoy third
Before this video I thought that Horween does not have any products that make use of Chrome.
The report could go more into detail but I understand that Horween does not want to give more insight.
I look for the Horween name to make sure it’s quality.
Love my Nomad rugged brown leather case on my iphone 11 pro max space gray 256gb.
Great high quality leather.
Just perfect.
I didn’t know bucky barnes was into leather
While I love the shoes made from the leathers they produce…..I worked down the street from this lance for years and it stinks up the entire area. And yes, my job was there first.
watching this just to hear about the environmental impact :O
🐎😭
Had no idea shell was horse.
