    I bought a high quality leather jacket years ago. Because I condition the thing every year, and because I wrap the thing up whenever I'm not using it, it's lasted me nearly 5 years without any smudges, rips, or ware. It's still so soft too. That's the difference between okay leather, and high quality leather.

    IMHO SBL stuffs are fairly priced, never expensive. Prior to being an SBL convert, I have been using luxury Italian brands cost much much more and none of their EDC wallets lasted more than 4 year before breaking apart. On my trip to Shanghai this May, owner of one art/antique dealer I visited persuaded me to sell my beloved large chestnut drybag to her after showcasing the bag's functionality with its gorgeous leather. Again this demonstrated quality stuff sells itself. I have been gifting and buying SBL stuffs a lot more during holiday season, so relatives and friends can share the love from SBL's fine leather woks. Never regretted purchasing any of my SBL leather pieces, they all have their own unique beauty within their individual design. Keep up the good work!

    Thank you, too, for *not* showing more detail of the de-meating process, which I just saw in another video. I was a paramedic, so it doesn't particularly bother me, but I'm sure it turns off more people than it attracts, and especially watching these things while eating a hefty piece of steak, well, even I can find it a little disturbing, LOL!

Thanks for taking time to make this film - I know of course that it is to add justification to your product prices and quite rightly so. Many people know what something costs but do not understand what its worth, and so demonstrating processes and the quality of components,design and craftsmanship is the only way to change minds.

    My thoughts on Saddleback leather...it's amazing! The prices are not too expensive. Like most things, you get what you pay for. I couldn't be happier with my Saddleback large briefcase.
    Think about it this way, because this is what happened with me:
    I purchased a cheap $40 "leather" bag from a mega office supply store. I wasn't even hard on the bag, using it for a 15" macbook pro and a thick book, and it only lasted me three months. That meant that I would have to purchase a new cheap bag at least every 6 months at $40 a pop. Instead I sprung for the $600 Saddleback large briefcase and it's lasted me without a single problem for almost a year now. I anticipate that my briefcase will last me the rest of my life (absent exigent or unforeseen circumstances).
    Watch all of Saddleback's videos. I did and before I purchased I compared Saddleback's product to many of the other "luxury" brands out there (all the big names). Nothing compared! Dave shows you all the big secrets to manufacturing. Virtually all the other brands use cotton string, split grain leather, "genuine leather," use of cotton or synthetic liners, many small cuts of leather, nickel plated pot-metal hardware, and the list keeps going.
    Do yourself a favor and buy quality. I don't regret my purchase one bit.

    • @wendyannh
      @wendyannh 5 лет назад

      You have just clearly outlined a big part of what is called "lifecycle cost" of a product. Buy pretty much anything really cheap at the beginning, and you will keep on buying over and over and over again, often far exceeding the cost in the long run of having bought quality to start with, which will end up far less expensive over time.

  • @rolandsj8880

    Real leather is the way. Use hide that would've been wasted from food or dairy industry. Give it life for many decades to come and all the "Vegan" leathers (plastic crap glued to each other and some bits of organic matter) fade away when put to real life tests next to real quality leather.
    Great video. Greetings from ECCO Leather tannery ;)

    • @varun009
      @varun009 2 года назад

      1. Most leather garments and articles are disposed of with comparable regularity to faux leather.
      2. I agree, faux leather is terrible. Unlike faux fur, it's far inferior to its organic equivalent, especially in terms of longevity and durability. But leather is a significant part of a cows worth. Look at the costing breakdown. It's by no means a byproduct. Therefore, it's responsible for some fraction of the environmental damage surrounding the meat industry such as the water for the irrigation of farmland to grow grain to feed cattle which give up about a 10% return in terms of raw calories invested in the form of grain, and is for that reason damaging for the environment. Then theres chrome tanning. Chrome tanned leather is worse for most environments than faux leather.
      3. For most modern applications, leather products of this tier will see little to no use of the kind that would wear down an everyday coat or bag. Leather bags are very heavy whereas ripstop nylon is much lighter. I wouldn't be clunking a nice chromeexel duffle bag through the jungle and against the brush. I have my canvas and nylon packs for that. If you want real byproduct leather that is as strong as cowhide, look into various pig leathers. They're very good.

    • @rolandsj8880

      @@varun009 1st one is not true. Example, My grand dad had leather jacked trom 70s. and had it for 30+ years. fake leather has no chance achieving that!
      2. Please look up definition of by-product according to iso 14045. And it is not economical value you have to look at when you estimate environmental impact of a product. Economical allocation is the last option when you actually have to compare something!
      So you are wrong on both points.
      Chrome tanned leather does not have worse environmental performance than fake leather over it's life time!
      I have worked for petrochemical companies and leather manufacturers and i know exactly what they are doing.
      3. this is up to application. I prefer leather belt, than nylon , leather shoes than fake leather shoes, leather bag than fake leather bag ...
      Since I'm not vegan, nor my family or friends, it makes sense to use leather. If leather is discarded it will create 10kg co2 per m2 in waste stage. Yet using it and processing will create 13-15kgCO2 / m2 emissions. Thus 3kg CO2 will be the end impact. roughly.
      Petro industry is digging something , refining and producing product to imitate leather ... makes little sense.

    • @varun009
      @varun009 2 года назад +1

      @@rolandsj8880
      1. You've misunderstood the point entirely. I'm saying that regardless of how long leather lasts, it's mass production by means of chrome tanning assures it's incorporation in (at least some minimal capacity) into clothing and trinkets (Keychains, wallets, belts). As these things are regularly discarded. The problem with this is that they end up in organic landfills and inevitably leak chromium into the surrounding area.
      2. Just because the skin is a small part of an animal relative to the meat in weight, I'm sure you'd pay more for a pound well crafted leather than a pound of Beef. Fact is, the hide is very important to the value of a cow. If it didn't have any, the beef industry would be hit harder.
      3. Not really. For the major components, leather has been swapped out effectively save for boots. Don't get me wrong, I own 23 leather/suede jackets and 6 leather/suede/shearling coats. I also have tons of rabbit fur. I have no problem with Ira use. I just thing we shouldn't fluff it up so much as to buy into the kine of propagandist marketing that justifies inordinate expenditure on fairly average products.

      @@varun009 1) Cr is 21st most abundant element in the earth crust. with 100ppm. If i will discard leather product risk it creates is bizarrely small. What about PU covered fake leather then? you care about that not to be degraded at all ? lets polut earth with plastic based fake leather instead, right?
      Also there are plenty of leathers that are not Cr tanned. and will not leak Cr...
      2) OK... so what is 1 raw hide worth, in $?

    I really appreciate these videos you put together. Not only does it educate me but I feel like it brings more credibility to you and your name. Last night I was readying online a bunch of people slandering you and your company. They were upset that some of your newer products (allegedly, because I do not know) have thinner leather then the older versions they have. The video was about one of your wallets. The fact of the matter is that they don’t know why you make the decisions you make, and they just proceed to slam you. Maybe the older wallets were a little too thick and sitting on them was a pain so a thinner leather would help. Some griping I’ve heard about the briefcases are that they are too heavy, maybe a thinner leather makes them a little lighter and easier to handle. So they think you’re a jerk who is starting to cut corners to make more money and rip people off. The fact is most people dont give the benefit of the doubt anymore, it seems like you are guilty until proven innocent. And if you are found innocent you’re still guilty in some people eyes. These videos help us understand the process so that we can have educated opinions. But for those who continue to plug their ears, like they say here in Texas…you cant fix stupid.
    To sum it all up, thanks for the videos and for your business. I really appreciate how you treat your employees and how you give money to organizations. I have no problem paying your prices and contributing to your business model. Until we find that tree that grows money from its limbs, we’re just gonna have to pay a little more for quality. But maybe that tree does exist, I bet it’s in the front yard of big foots house or in the chupacabra’s backyard. Who knows…

    I just ordered 4 bags, two for travel and two for carry on/ personal. It was hard to pull the trigger on the items in the cart, but I did, irrespective of cost. The reason is that I have spent over the course of my many years of constant overseas travel ( 15 +) I have spent at least the equivalent, I'm guessing on everything from Samsonite to cheaper stuff. I got tired of spending money repeatedly. The bucks stops here.Though to be honest, now I'm scared I will have my bags stolen. Every baggage handler has commented on how nice the bags are, and that they look expensive. Well I recently made it From Orlando via Frankfurt to Afghanistan ( Kabul). The two checked bags made it. My favorite showed up last, what a relief, but I'm still nervous for future trips. Everyone notices your bags, I have three Tobacco colored bags and one chocolate Beast. Love my stuff so far.

    Question for you, if you do not mind? When you first stated did or have you ever gotten a "DUMB HIDE"? The kind of hide that seems no matter how many times you soak, and stretch/pull the Hide it just doesent want to work with you?? Haha we pass these type of hides to the whole FAMILY..... Overpriced with cheaper oversea production put most leather tanneries out of business here in North America Chicago used to have a tone of leather tanneries operating what i remember most is the smell to me is the smell of hard working people.

    • @danasantos6949
      @danasantos6949 6 лет назад

      Believe it or not, the same happened here, in Mexico. There were lots of tanneries, also breweries, chocolate factories, you name it. They're all closed up because they chose cheaper overseas production or they've been sold to bigger corporate overseas brands. It's heart breaking that the same thing happens everywhere

    • @jceinwechter
      @jceinwechter 6 лет назад

      Both of those tanneries produce some of the best veg tan anywhere but Saddleback doesn't use veg tan. Some of it is workability and some of it is the very high price of veg tan.

      Eliffio Rodríguez Fun fact: the reason rodeo bulls are so angry is because their testicles have been tied tightly together. Unless trying to mate, bulls are pretty docile, so they have to "inspire" the bull to throw the rider.

I am a development practitioner who is looking forward to helping my fellow Tanzania get out of absolute poverty through the use of our available resources one of which is Leather resource (due to availability of large population of cattle). The best thing I think to start with is initiating leather tanning and processing using low cost methods. How can you do to help my dream?

    Without knowing what the margins are I would venture to say they are higher on the "accessory" items than they are on the bags. But, the bags? They are not overpriced for the quality of construction and materials. They are putting in a lot of thought and cost into producing a great product at the current prices. I don't feel like I overpaid for what I got whatsoever.

    Please correct me if I'm wrong, but the actual *tanning* is complete when you reach the "wet blue" stage (5 minutes into the film), the rest of the process is just adding finish. Right?
    Then the later comment about how some cheaper leather, after dyeing, has a blue layer in the middle as a sign of poor tanning is false. The blue colour *is* the tanning, showing that it's penetrated.
    You see it because the dye that hasn't penetrated all through.

      Hey CJ, most of our stuff is Chrome Tanned. It holds up better to things like water than veggie does. It also has better color retention. The hides come from the US, and the leather comes from a tannery in Mexico. It's good stuff. I'm glad we could help a bit! -William

    So basically you use the cheapest chrome tan leather available in one of the cheapest labor countries that has zero EPA, zero OSHA laws..to maximize your profits as well as selling your substandard products for over the actual price of premium leather goods such as Veg tan leather goods..that are much better in quality and much safer for you and the environment.. I see thank you for your honesty..

    • @agentcovert
      @agentcovert 4 года назад +1

      @@StuffyMc they openly omit they use chrome tan leather..the fastest, cheapest leather available..they charge a very premium price, a price point that is more expensive than others charge for much higher quality and premium Veg tan leather that takes months to tan vs chrome tan 12hrs to 24 hrs..Chrome tan leather is a much cheaper and inferior product that wears out much faster then Veg tan leather..Mexico has no OSHA to protect the workers from dangerous conditions at the work place a no EPA to protect the environment from chemical pollutants..Mexico also has a very low working wage such as $1.00 USD per days work..even if they choose to grossly over pay the skilled workers it would be $5.00 USD per day.. perhaps you should rewatch the video and do some fact checking..as everything I mentioned is 100% factual with zero exaggeration made..Best wishes my friend..

    Dave, great video !!
    Question for you. Do you own both Saddleback Leather and the tannery ?
    I happen to own a tannery in Michigan however, our process is to keep the hair on the skin. We have most of those same mills that were in your video but also, we have several smaller wet processing drums. We too shave the skin using what is called a "Round Knife" and a "Spot Shaver." You are right in that the process and products used in the tannery are expensive and there are tanneries in my industry that do it the cheep way. Shameful !!

    • @deanloick4106
      @deanloick4106 8 лет назад

      +mark marlette : Even Hermes doesn't have their own tannery, they buy from different tanneries for different types of skin. Normally one tannery is specialized in one type of animal skin and often only from one single region/country to avoid variability because food/nutrition that you give to the animals affect the skin (and hair) quality too.

    • @markmarlette523
      @markmarlette523 8 лет назад

      +Dean löick Thank you Dean. You are right as far as nutrition goes. Health of the animal plays a very important part as to how well the skin will turn out. If you get a chance, check out my tannery at www.furdressing.com it's pretty cool.
