Black History Month 2023 Events Recap - DLSPH

  • For Black History Month this year, DLSPH hosted two incredible events! Watch our recap video for some highlights, and read below for more information.
    The first occurred on February 9, when a panel of Black-identifying professionals spoke at The Intersecting Identities that Inspire our Excellence. The panel included: Hénoc Muamba, professional athlete, NFL, CFL, 2022 Grey Cup Most Valuable Player, and 2022 Grey Cup champion; Celina Caesar-Chavannes, book author of ‘Can You Hear Me Now?’ and Former MP; Jason Faulkner, owner and clothing designer at Spread Love; Stella Djulus, founder and visual artist at Arts by Stella; and Kevin Allwood, owner of Allwood Market & KaSpace Café.
    On February 16, three outstanding Black leaders in public health and health systems were recognized with an inaugural award at the Black Health Leaders Recognition Ceremony. The night began with a performance by poet Amoya Reé. Fatimah Jackson-Best, Project Manager at Black Health Alliance and Assistant Professor with the Department of Health Research Methods, Evidence, and Impact at McMaster University, was recognized by Notisha Massaquoi. Cynthia Damba, Director, Health Analytics at Ontario Health, Toronto Region, was recognized by Anna Greenberg. And Jacqueline Silvera, Director of Inclusion, Diversity, Equity, Accessibility and Anti-Racism with the University of Health Network was recognized by Sylvia Welsh.
