  • The paint is lovely, the packaging is beautiful, and the included brush is high quality and useful, what's not to love? Today I am reviewing the new Viburnum Art Watercolor kit: amzn.to/3QXrXJq
I bought this on amazon after hemming nd hawing over it for months and I am glad I did.
    Pros:
    Beautiful, transparent paint
    Beautiful packaging
Everything feels high-end in this kit
The brush is very well made and god preforming
    Pigment info included
    Lightfast pigments used
    Cons:
The paint pans are not filled flush to the top. I think they were liquid poured to the top but shrank
The paint seems to wear down quickly
Overall this is a lovely set and would make a nice gift. The price went up by $20 after I bought mine but I am thinking it will probably go on sale for black Friday so I wanted to get this video out. Either that or they launched it with a low price to encourage sales. I don't think it is overpriced at its current price but I love a sale! Because I am an Amazon affiliate I can't type out the price, unfortunately.

I definitely do not need any more paints! I'm doing a "no paint buy" for 2024. I can use what I have. Realizing that more paint will not make me a better artist 😉. But it's nice that you review sets so that we can make better decisions.

Wow!! I’m sooo happy and proud! If I had the wherewithal to even DO a review I would have said exactly what you said about this set, Lindsay!! Not that I disagree with you very often. This review is absolutely spot on! I love the wooden box, I love the brush, but there’s not a lot of paint…So, it depends on if you want to spend the $ on the box and brush. Personally, I wouldn’t buy it for $65. Again, Lindsay, your complete breakdown of the pigments, etc is invaluable! You rock!

Great review! I saw the day when they jacked the price up to $65 and I absolutely believe they did that so they could put a sale on the item for black friday...bc the day after increasing the price to $65- they listed a $10 off coupon with it- so the final price was $55... I couldn't believe the sliminess of it all...ive also noticed a lot of products go up in price this last month or so and I 100% believe it's so the companies can charge gift buyers more during the holidays and so the companies can "reduce" prices for black Friday and other holiday deals...Anyway, sorry about the rant...lol. great video as always, thanks for sharing and much love 💙

SENNELIER is the only commercial brand that carries PR242, vermilion… It is one of my absolute favorites! also, it’s funny that they would give the Rose madder Color a four-star rating, since it contains PV 19 and😂😂 PR 122 which are both extremely light fast. The color selection and consistency that you describe, reminds me of Eastern European watercolors like Rosa gallery and others. Looks like😂 a really nice set :-) thanks for the review, thorough as usual! :-)

Hullo Lindsay, I was feeling like I had watched this already! But it was the painting demo that you did! I am glad that you continue to create substantive reviews for us, thank you. I am glad that you have shown us to good and the plastic of this product! I believe that I am just not going to buy any more plastic palettes. I have converted my travel sets to metal and studio sets to ceramics! Oh, I still have plastic ones I am not going to just throw them out! Thank you for sharing this lovely palette with us. I did make my own soft pastel box and I have been thinking about asking my brother to make me a wooden box for some watercolors and ceramic mixing palette! I envision a space for the metal palettes inserts and a ceramic tile or handmade palette for mixing. It does have a certain charm and nothing beats the smell of good hardwoods! Thank you for sharing this review with us. Oh! I use a short scrubber brush for ALL My lifting, getting your knuckles rapped with a maul stick for using a squirrel brush for lifting will make you think twice about lifting with the “wrong” brush! Please take care and enjoy your day!

For the Spring Green, they used PY151 Benzimidazalone Yellow... much less glowy and spreading than PY150, green gold/nickel azo yellow. That's why it didn't look like PY150 :) (Edit: I see you figured that out, but Dialyride Yellow is deep and it's PY83.) I agree with you, I prefer a browner Burnt Sienna and it's turned totally orange in the past few decades. I have a tube of Grumbacher Academy from the mid 80s and it's such a gorgeous hue! They still do use PBR7 and it looks like they might still do that deep brown hue. I am mad at Daniel Smith, just like you, but I do like their basic Burnt Sienna, Burnt and Raw Umber hues.

This sent me down a rabbithole about PB17. I'm a pigment nerd, yet I still don't have that in watercolor. Holbein still uses it (I think?) in their gouache color Katsura Blue. Whoops, looks like it might be PB15 by now! I thought there was none in watercolor, but you're right, Paul Rubens did use it back in 2021. Quite possibly not anymore. And apparently it's used in Mission Gold Silver Class but only as a mix. Possibly available from some small handmade makers. A little less lightfast than PB15. But a beautiful transparent cyan!

    Thanks for another great review!
I definitely would not buy this set. I think it was a very cheap and lazy move to put a plastic mixing well palette in the top instead of adding a permanent mixing spot like so many other wooden palette boxes have. I also think it was a very cheap move to not fill the pans to the brim. Also, the paint is definitely around student grade/quality of much cheaper paints. The price they charge for this is waaaay too much for the quality and thought put into the wooden box.
In general, I tend to stay away from cheaper watercolor paint sets because I have a professional stash of tubes from DS and W&N and a student grade stash of Cotman tubes. Instead of buying sets i would maybe use only once, i buy a new tube or two of DS or WN in colors I do the have yet or to replace colors that are used up.

I find your review videos very entertaining! And I always learn great little tips and pigment info. I particularly love the sleuthing….. on that note, I have a question about Turner paints because you seem to be very familiar with them and they are not very common where I live in Europe. I was wondering if Turner has a student line of watercolours? I’ve only seen the artist watercolours advertised on Jackson’s art supplies. I was recently in Japan and I picked up 6 tubes of turner watercolour for 120¥. It’s SO inexpensive that I wonder if it is a student line or just an old packaging (maybe only used in Japan?) that’s being phased out…. I got a crazy good deal on Turner Acrylic gouache in different packaging too. They both looked as if they’d been packaged up in plastic sleeves in store. The store was in Osaka, and I THINK that the turner factory is there.

    • @thefrugalcrafter
      @thefrugalcrafter  8 месяцев назад

I dont think they offer student grade, at least not in America, and supplies are cheaper in Japan because more people do srt there and they have little inflation (companies actually apologize to the public if the must raise prices!) They will make more money in forgoing markets. I think tmyou got a good deal, enjoy! Oh and the Japan packaging is a little different than the USA packaging.

I was watching while I was cooking and eating but you caught my attention when you started mixing colors. I would love to see a video on mixing some fairly basic colors like, skin tones, peach, more olive types, aqua, and other more unusual greens like forest dark green, how to get a pale blue without adding white, I have a decent palette but not lots of the mixed colors. I do mix lots of colors but I waste a lot of paint because I don’t know the formulas. Is their a cookbook or formulas?

65.oo is too much considering a 48 set of White Nights is much cheaper for full pans in a wood or beech box 179. to 199. max or a plastic tin way cheaper. You can buy a very nice wood cigar box for 5.00 and make your own wood box with ceramic tile mixing surface way cheaper, in my opinion.

So my current watercolor palette is the original White Nights 36 whole pan palette (it is extremely large) that I got in 2014 back before they reformulated and raised the price, and now I'm interested in buying a new palette that is more compact so I can use it in bed and take it with me when I go out. I'd like to get something of equal or greater quality, so I'm trying to figure out how other brands compare. I'd like to stay under $100, but under $50 would be even better.
Also, if you remember, I asked a question about those sanjoki markers recently on a different video, but I forgot to respond to your reply and now I don't remember what video that was on haha. I figured I'll just do it here, instead. My comment was about the ink getting a speckled appearance as it dried, and I think I figured out part of the problem. After doing some more research, I saw some people saying that speckling is linked to markers that are extremely wet/juicy with absorbant paper. I tested this theory out by using the chisel nib instead of the brush nib, because it's dryer, and there wasn't any speckling as long as I used a light hand. I also noticed that thinner, less absorbant paper speckled less, even with the brush nib.
Unfortunately, after figuring this out and then trying to do a single piece in my ohuhu marker sketchbook, multiple markers ran out of ink, and of course it was all the light colors. I don't know why I keep having so many problems with them! I think I'm giving up and am going to message the seller to see if I can get a refund or a replacement. It's been so long that I doubt they will, but thankfully it was only $35 so it's not too much of a loss. I think I'm gonna try some ohuhu markers, next, because those seem to be really popular.

Been wanting to get their flourescent watercolors along with the glitter ones, though I actually saw a dupe of their glitter palette from the brand Artsy if I'm remembering correctly. It has good reviews on Amazon and seems to have all the same colors at practically half the price. I was also looking for their jelly gouache palette you recommended years ago ago, but it's not on Amazon anymore. Hoping I can find it somewhere else.

I am going to offer some unsolicited advice, Lindsay has talked about DaVinci tubes for the classes she has held. I have found ALL of DaVinci paints simply wonderful! They have hand poured palettes too! From 6, 12, 24 half pans from several very talented artists. I started with Denise’s palettes and I have purchased all of her curated paints too! I purchased a basic set of warm and cool primaries and was so blown away that I purchased several pre-made palettes and now DaVinci have taken over my studio palette that has 40 wells and had more Mijello paints at the start, now DaVinci reigns supreme! I still have other brands in the studio palette because every company has colors that are just perfect! Sennelier French Ultramarine is just one that I can recall easily.

Wow, just looked it up on Amazon and I’m not sure what the exchange rate is, but they’ve put the price up to $122 Australian 😢
Have also noticed lately that some of the professional paint that was once affordable ie White Nights, is now at least double, sometimes triple the price it was a couple years ago. It seems as soon as something becomes popular, they raise the prices. Do they not realise that the reason it was so popular is because it was once considered affordable?

    • @thefrugalcrafter
      @thefrugalcrafter  8 месяцев назад +2

It's crazy! I think the reason white nights went up was because of the war and less product being exported. This set is reported to be very expensive outside of the USA. For $45, it was a solid buy, but I wouldn't pay more for an unknown brand. I had a hard time justifying $45 for an unknown, and if I knew the price would go up, I probably would have passed because it wouldn't be interesting to my viewers at that price. I like it, I'm glad to have it but bummed for others that the price went up.

Question…. Are watercolor pans the same as cakes? Thanks Lindsay …..

Essentially yes, sometimes round pans are reffered to as cakes but they are the same.

I have been watching your videos for year and have believed in your opinion of products and bought a class set. . I just watched you video from a few months ago about artist grade watercolors. In it you mention over and over that you respect a company that gives you good customer service. Well Craftamo when I tried to buy your brushes had no customer service and I lost $70 because of a simple mistake.. They made no effort to correct it. We went back and forth serva times and they just said to bad we can't help you. I can't help but wonder if all the artist who use them are just creating the brush sets to make more money. And the company is only in it for them.

I am so sorry to hear that. I will not be working with them again for a couple of reasons. Craft amo looked great when I did my research but was let down. I had to interview on behalf of a couple of customers to make sure they were taken care of (to my knowledge they were) but that is too many issues 8n m opinion for a quality brush company. I'm not going into further in a public space, but needless to say, I will not be doing another set with them. I don't know the details of your problem, but I am so sorry they treated you poorly.

@@thefrugalcrafter I’m sorry to hear I wasn’t the only one. It’s a shame when a company is just out for the money and not long term customers.
