Painting Rocks on 25 Year Old Watercolor Paper! Is it still good?

- Who remembers Fabriano Uno Watercolor Paper? I've had this in my stash for over 20 years! I am not sure when it was discontinued or why, there really is not a lot of info about this paper online. I bought several reams of this paper back in the summer of 1999 I think on a good sale (maybe because it was being discontinued) and I quite liked it but not as much as Arches but it was still a good paper. Anyway, I was going through an old filing cabinet and found a bunch of paper I tore down from big sheets and organized in a file folder and decided to use those to make some sketchbooks. I wondered if the sizing was OK since it has lived in my basement for decades so I decided to soak it and do a painting! Here is the full-length, real-time tutorial, grab your paints and paint along!

Hullo Lindsay, I am amazed at how your rocks seem to come out so wonderfully! I realize that you are not going to post a failure but unless you practice your never going to be better, so I am guessing that you are painting a lot of rocks? Maybe it is the Maine coastline? Thank you for sharing this as well as all of your ideas. I have watercolor papers that are much older than 25 years old, but it is all stored in the spare bedroom in larger portfolios. Now I have experienced bad sizing before and I “rescued” it from the trash by simply not using it with watercolor! I used it for drawings and I used it for some classes I gave at our local senior center. Free paper is always appreciated 😊

Love the real time tutorials. So valuable to see and hear the whole process. I was just using the MaimeriBlu potters pink today. I needed a natural texture pink on the nose of a Highland cow illustration. I have that reservoir mimik brush and that thing makes fine lines for miles. Thanks Lindsay 💜

I have a question as you prepped this paper pulled from your stash of sheet papers:
How does the process you used in this video before 8:43 of wetting the back of your watercolor paper help prevent buckling when you don't tape paper to your surface?
If you would comment, it would be most appreciated as I often work on papers that can't really be taped. Some of those papers I use are recycled pages in old journals I converted to daily use with fluid art play -- with gesso and watercolor medium, gloss, etc. -- to scratch journals and experiment only journals.
I probably could wet the backs of these journal pages without too much of a problem as long as I gently dried them with a paper towel sandwich and a low setting wind tunnel from my craft hair dryer. Could also use heating gun, but the coatings on these journal pages can emit toxic fumes if heated too high, or even at lower temperatures. So, I have to be cautious; correct?
Also, could you comment on use of a drywall sandwich also used to cure and fully dry dried to the touch fluid art sheets. This suggestion came my way from a FB group I've lost touch with back during the Pandemic. Thx for any thoughts on the subject of drying acrylics and watercolor work, and living with such work in a humid studio space.
It works by evening out the tension on the paper. You could place a thin cutting mat in your journal behind your page you are osinting on if you want to try it. I have not heard of the drywall sandwich method.

I still have some watercolor paper from the 70’s. A block,of Winsor and Newton, and a block of Arches. (I just generally don’t like using a block, I guess! ) I last used them a few years ago and they were both still fine.

I think any professional brand would be compatible but if you want the honey based quality try sennelier.

Something you can try is to clear your browser history/cookies and reboot your computer. Usually that dies the trick when you get hung up logging in.
How would you have known the sizing was bad? - Kristin
you can tell when you paint on it, the paint would have sunk in rather than spread out and you would see unpleasant dark patches on the paper.
