- Ben Nevis Ultra 2021. Having been timed out at the bottom of Ben Nevis in 2019 I was determined to settle a score at the 2021 Ben Nevis Ultra. Set in the stunning mountains of Scotland, the race is part of the Salomon Skyline festival based at Kinlochleven, which includes the Ring of Steall and the Glen Coe Skyline races as well as the Ben Nevis Ultra. Here's what happened.

Having now watched this video Stephen, I'm absolutely gutted for you. But you'll get it done this year. I know you will !!!
I'm not so much gutted for you as inspired by the authenticity and honesty of your filmmaking. When I see a "Film My Run" video in my subscriber feed on RUclips, I know its going to be a quality video.
Thank you John. Very kind word. I will finish it this year, most definitely!!
So pleased to see your 2022 result! Cutting a bit fine aren't you? Third time was the charm! Can't wait to see the film.
Thanks Edward. Working on the 2022 film of this soon.
Bad luck. I did the Ring of Steall the day before, and really enjoyed it. I walked up Benn Nevis the next day to watch the runners doing the ultra. Tough conditions on the tops and heart breaking watching people getting cutoff at the Carpark aid station. Contemplating doing the BNU in 2022, but it is concerning lots of very accomplished ultra runners struggle with the cuttoffs. Judging from the results and forum comments, I think people need to be aim to get to checkpoint 6 before 2:30pm.
Good effort mate. Like you, I missed the last checkpoint by only a few minutes after being told by the marshals there was 3k to go when there wasn’t. Total farce! Was absolutely gutted but I’ll be back again this year to try again.
Despite the fact that I was dot watching you and others that weekend it still took my by surprise when you didn't make the cut-off! Third time lucky...
Great film, brings back good memories! I made it to the Nevis checkpoint with about 30 mins in hand and decided to push on as it felt a bit tight but I was confident I'd make it. I did, but with only 5 mins to spare and I ran the whole way overtaking lots of other runners - the timing for the cut offs before the final one were very misleading and I also was shocked when the guy told me how far I had to go! I have to say though I think the timing for the final cut off was about right. That last section was brutal and a lot of people were suffering, the organisers wouldn't want people up there in the dark. I felt ok and finished in 11hrs 20 mins but passed around 40 others and it was dark before the last runners finished.
Aw absolutely gutted for you mate. Don't give up and definitely give it another go next year!
Great vid. Amazing looking race. Excellent as usual 👍
Good vid, unlucky result 😢 hopefully join you next year 💪👍
Totally gutted for you. I remember reading it at the time. 😢 I was supposed to run but I had to work, I was gutted at the time, but probably wouldn’t of made it also. I’ve never missed a cut off in a race and I wouldn’t of considered it. Well done on a great film again.
I arrived 15m late, knowing full well I would not make it from the previous checkpoint. That run up the Glen may be easy, but mentally brutal to keep moving on tired legs. When I arrived my legs were shot, so really no fit state to carry on…though a rest after the river crossing and some food may have got me going.
What you will not realise is that the cut off times are set to allow you to do the section before, ie summit the Ben, when ideally you need to be half an hour ahead at the visitor centre. The winner took longer than the allotted time between 7&8.
Remember that the marshals have a long enough day as it is, and with an 8pm final time, the sweepers can end up shepherding runners off the hill in the dark.
Hope this is useful advice to any intending to give it a shot. About half are DNF, so don’t be upset if you are one.
Stephen, with luck and better weather etc, you should make it this year. I think I rate my chances about 50-50.
Well I am definitely finishing it this year!
Fantastic video, Stephen! Thank you for all the information. Wish you the best for this year!
I will be in the starting line this year, as well. Hope we can meet and say hi!
Regards!
Hey how did you do??
@@FilmMyRun It was a fantastic and brutal experience! At the aid station, I seriously wanted to give up and quit the race. (Lack of fuel and proper training). However, with the support of the organization crew, I managed to keep going and finish the race. This race really tested me, but it was worth it.
I hadn´t trained very much, but I managed to go through the finish line.
What about you?
Thanks amazing and inspiring 😮 thanks for sharing
You are so welcome! Thank you
I met you at the cut off and walked back with you to our bus of shame trip lol. I'll be back next year for another crack
You and me both Kev. See you in the start line
Extremely frustrating, If I was 2 mins behind I probably would have just cracked on anyway. Like you say at least then you know that you crossed the line and 4 hours to do 10k even if you walk that's 1 Mile and a half and hour. Could do that on your hands. Unlucky Steven. Onto the next mate
Great vid as usual and so gutted for you! Why is the cut off so tight (12k in 75'?) Seems quite unfair to me, especially when you have plenty of time for the final climb once you're through it. I don't think you'll make the same mistake next year though!
I guess that’s the latest time you can possibly get to the previous checkpoint. Ideally they want you there well before that. If I had left the checkpoint a minute or two after If arrived I would have had and hour and a half to do the 12k. But it was my fault for not knowing it was 12 km and relying on the marshals to tell me.
Bummer man.
So frustrating being so close to the cut off…… another good film albeit not what you wanted 🤨
The *only* thing I have not missed over the last two race-free covid years (Still no racing or traveling in Hong Kong) is that pre-race apprehension you're obviously feeling at 2:50.
Gutted for you
I did the original Salomon Ben Nevis Ultra in 2017. It was a shambles. Probably the most poorly organised race I've done.
why was this?
@@cherries4life387 My last comment seems to have been deleted for having a link in it, so if you search for 'Runs Writes Code' and read her report of the Ben Nevis race you'll get an idea how poorly thought out and marked the event was. Unless you were at the elite end of the field you were doomed to be timed out from the start. The 'aid stations' were little more than water and soggy biscuits with one camping chair to go round. The volunteers, bless them, had no clue at all. The course at times had no markers, and didn't make any sense directing you into ankle deep bogs instead of trails. I arrived at the finish with minutes to spare and I worked my ass off. You couldn't get hot food at the finish unless you had a token or something, which was a cruel joke when we're all standing there shivering head to toe in mud with a race numbers on. It says a lot that the awards ceremony was scheduled at a time when the podium finishers were still out racing.
This is not a religion comment. Jesus said of the pharases that they observed the letter of the law and ignored the spirit of the law. Terrible to not let you all just finish the bloody thing.
I'm sorry to give you bad news Stephen but I am going to have to stop looking at your videos because they make me feel such a wimp.
Great video and gutting to not make the cut off after getting through the first one fine. But you'll be back!
