  • Had a repair shop install a new harmonic balancer on my 2003 Mercedes E55. They used common hand tools to install the retaining bolt which requires a special tool to hold the crankshaft in position such that the retaining bolt can be torqued to spec. (250 ft/lbs). Within 5 miles of leaving their shop the retaining bolt backed out and the balancer spun off the nose of the crankshaft causing irreparable damage. The case is now in court.

Trust me, I was biting my tongue the entire time. Main goal was to get as much evidence as possible knowing that it would likely end up in court.... which it is.

Did it damage the crank beyond repair?

@@BmwpetroldoorshoppingcarNordsc Crank snout and keyway were messed. Mechanic tried to “fix it” by with a dremel tool, sent a pile metal shaving into the oil pan, tried to hide it by changing out the oil but in the process snapped the shaft off of the oil filter holder which caused low oil pressure and resulted in the engine seizing less than 5 miles from leaving his shop.

Ffs, what a total pain in the arse.
Best result would be he buys the car from you at full value

Simply, the way the mech even speaks is really questionable: good luck to you Scott!
