thank you so much for these videos, Jacob! these are the most lovely little lectures on harmony i've ever had - i feel that classical musicians (particularly us orchestral instrumentalists) often really neglect the intricacies of harmony - we are so focused on refining our single voices and putting across the most compelling solo melody lines that it's just very easy to be deficient and just get by with the most basic understanding of it necessary. it is so wonderfully informative to hear your slow and patient explanations of your decisions in voicing and harmonizing things, and how you manipulate your software to produce the sounds you want. i've learned so much, and i do dearly hope you decide to continue this amazing series!! -michael

I met and worked w Allaudin Mathieu for about ten years who built me back up from the ground w singing the intervals perfectly in tune. He then showed me how I could imply the 'real' interval by context when I came back to the piano. Allaudin, along w Terry Riley, had been students of Pandit Pran Nath. Those three for a while taught at Mills in Oakland where famously Milhaud also taught. As a choir boy in England growing up In the Bleak Midwinter was and is a favorite. I find your mod to G ¼ sharp in your arrangement absolutely thrilling. Allaudin was also a student of Easely Blackwood who invented interesting and mindwarping scales in equal temperament. They do odd things to your brain. And he was friend and comrade with Hamza El Din. At a house concert in Cotati CA, I waited all evening for his perfectly in tune quarter sharp. It was hair-raising when it finally came. I asked Allaudin once about that note since it didn't occur in the harmonic series. He said it was like standing in the middle of a bridge pointing to each river bank. Thanks again for your inspirational work Jacob. I really enjoy seeing this creative process in action and the mini lectures thrown in.

When watching this, I listened to my voice modulating a c, when I played the piano, the upper G was out of tune, but I could still hit the low C perfectly with my voice, so I knew I was in tune. I then played some piano, and it just sounded wrong, out of tune. I totally got it 😄🙂
