Perfection.
Soo basically the mere mortals in his school band didn’t know the true extents of more lol

Not to take a thing at all from other geniuses in their own generation, but the timing of a Jacob Collier coming along when he did, with his openness and rich way of expressing his musicianship is making this a very special time indeed as it gets captured and shared on RUclips for all the interested to witness as it plays out. As said in the documentary, there is no way to predict what his future will bring for all to see and hear but current indication is that it will be awesome.
I'd hoped that he might get into musical tools and music education in a way that would help share his approaches with the masses on a different level of driving the musicianship of the world, and from the interview it might be that that comes to pass.
As we've always known, we stand on the shoulder of giants, so what a thrill to witness the development of the latest genius taking his place atop the shoulders of so many great prececessors and I can only imagine what the next person will bring that will someday stand on his shoulders...
It is truly a great time to be a lover of deep and rich music.
B Miller, having spent my life in music education in higher ed, I thank you for your insight into Jacob and what he is bringing to the world. I hope those in charge of teaching music can break out of their rigid constructs and open to the future. Jacob is the path to the future of music...the Mozart of our time.
@Paul Mina Storm You're another one of these useless trolls lingering in the crevices of RUclips, popping up on Jacob Collier videos (of all places) ready to inject your nonsensical conceptualization of his music. You're so sure you have him boiled down to a simple formula, and you're so convinced that everyone who loves him is taken in by some banal and insidious trick that you, clever listener, can see right through.
I'm not sure if you are ready to hear this, but you clearly aren't ready to hear Jacob Collier's music. You haven't developed enough as a listener, or dare I say, as a human being. There's nothing smaller, more pathetic, and more sad than someone like you -- whose own insecurities are turned inward and twisted into that which you accuse others of.
Luckily, everyone here can see right through you. You are in the company of people whose eyes are wide open, while you, sad listener, remain blind, deaf, and numb to the musical reality of Jacob Collier. And I can think of no more of an ironic fate for you than that: to be swimming in a sea of living proof of your ignorance as you go out of your way to listen to -- and comment on -- the work of one of the world's greatest living musicians.
Paul Mina Storm you continue to demonstrate you know nothing about music theory. Because if you did, you’d realize how foolish you sound. You have the depth of a spoon and the intellect of a child. You are not capable of grasping his music. It’s actually just sad.
@@ophello Not to take anything away from your criticism of his comment, but this comes off as incredibly condescending. Referring to someone as "sad listener" is overly pompous.
@Paul Mina Storm It's not exactly 'Chapter 1'.A lot of the concepts that he uses in his music are vastly undiscovered and while he isn't creating any new concepts and ideas, he is using them in a way that is completely original and unique. He has openly talked about the theory he uses and breaks down his logic tracks in live streams, so if his music was just all unoriginal and just demonstrating music theory he found on chapter 1 of some book, why is nobody able to copy, replicate or capture his sound?
it seems like a joke that someone at 22 can reach this level of consciousness, i mean he is not just great at music, but a great human being (logic +emotion)!
A pure "holistic" genius! Thank you for taking us to your journey Jacob
A truly divine joke
The West doesn’t have the concept of the boddhisatva. Someone who isn’t as far torn from the pure light of creation and wisdom as others. I believe Stevie Wonder is such a person, they are extremely rare in a generation, much less a local population. Quick shoutout to Jacob’s family for doing such a great job in allowing him to be who he is... and not screwing it up.
Hes good at music theory and having a general grasp of music in general but his songs and lyrics are pretty mediocre. Its all a cult of personality
An old soul x)
@@unholylemonpledge9730 do you recall at all the sentences in the video where he talks about his lyrics?
28:34 I love watching the crowd reactions to that chord movement, you can see people's minds blown.
I know... Right? That passing chord is so amazing!
You could see even the concert master smiled when she heard the chord movement
I also like that even Jacob himself seems to react to it, as if the music is writing itself infront of him. But really it probably just comes so natural to him that he can also just enjoy the show while being the performer haha :)
"Less is more, but less is only more when you know what more is." Absolutely...

There are many „less is more“ comments to Jacob‘s YT videos by people who just have difficulty to process complexity.
Rumour has it that Jacob has never clapped in 4/4
That’s ok because he’s thinking it all the time.
36:06
1:02:12 the question and Jacob's response is great stuff.
I was actually waiting for him to answer this question.
I think it just cannot be underestimated what role really secure attachment as an infant and toddler has played in his personal path. Secure attachment is the key factor in the fabric of being an earthed and centered personality. It‘s this foundation on which his uncredible musical talent can unfold. And it makes his soul so beautiful.
DUDE you're absolutely spot on. It's so cool to see someone understand the roots of this inner peace
CHINA is a fascist totalitarian terror regime ! beware of that ! get rid of all fake troll students copying ideas ! stealing them day by day in the name of their state - send them home !
blew my mind completely
You hear Jacob and you are taken aback by sheer creativity and fresh sounds, but what is more startling is his genuine humility and impeccable manners! This in itself is what I find so innovative! Add in the music and you've the whole package. Fine young man and an excellent role model for us all.
I very much appreciate your thoughts. I‘d like to add that this is not really „innovative“ and it‘s not a sort of „package“ you may receive by some sort of delivery process. Let‘s face it: an indispensable pillar is genetics. You just have to be lucky to be blessed with this sort of musicality and this g-factor. A second indispensable factor is personality which in Jacob’s case is grounded in curiosity, openness, acceptance and love (COAL). This is also largely out of reach of your own creative endeavours. To a great extent it depends on your upbringing, your attachment experiences.
So the odds that anyone become a second Jacob Collier just by trying very hard are astronomically low. That said, I absolutely agree that he is a fantastic role model.
@@achenarmyst2156 I agree that anyone who is trying to become Jacob should cease immediately and instead strive to become who they truly are and realize their own fullest potential. Cheers!
Jacob was very lucky that his parents were good parents, were musicians, and gave him a safe space to discover the joy of music for himself. It’s not just that he is genetically predisposed to being great. He was raised well, and he worked very hard.
Hes good at music theory and having a general grasp of music in general but his songs and lyrics are pretty mediocre. Its all a cult of personality
If he is your role model u should give up on music n listen to cardi b
1:11:56 Glad that Jacob decided to be
himself on tour and doesn't try to create some glamorous fake hype. He lets the music speak for itself and it's absolutely riveting and everything that I think a concert should be.
What a gift to all of us here on planet Earth!
This comment tells me so much about who you are… we should be friends
Feels like Jacob Collier single handedly revolutionized the music world since he's 20 years old. Jacob is the Mozart (and beyongd) of the 21st century!
Every single time I find a video about Jacob answering questions is such an enlightening experience.
Right? How lucky are we that he’s decided to make his knowledge so freely available to the world? He doesn’t have to do that, but he seems happy to do it.
Apart from his musical abilities, why is no one talking about how extremely well he is able to analyze intricate emotional and creative processes and translate and rationalize them so clearly on a genius level. It's pretty damn rare to see someone that has an almost subnormal EQ and IQ.
You are right. And you probably meant to say „superhuman“.
@@achenarmyst2156 Well I think I meant to say subnormal and superhuman and took the wrong combination of that lol.
Yeah this is why whiners who say like “emperors new clothes” have no idea what they’re talking about. This is a guy who is able to not only have these insights about music, but he is able to put them into words and offer them to other musicians of all ages. That is an incredibly rare thing.
He hasn't dwelled into the sadder tone of music yet ...would be great to see how he does there.
Till now he is funky, happy, or quirky music. While it sounds great, there's nothing to connect with at a more deeper level.
Very articulate young man, indeed. He was extremely fortunate, as you note, to have all his factors come together in one person: Hard working; extremely intelligent and articulate, very talented - not to mention very fortunate to be born into a particular family culture that he was born into - to learn to validate himself.
Had he been an engineer, an architect, artist, craftperson....etc...the result would have been the same, e.i. he would have been phenomenal at anything he did, because of his family culture. Lots of kudos to his family.
(By contrast, an intelligent young lady being brought up in a very oppressive household, where at least the father was an "American Taliban" and/or a pedophile.. Many of these poor children never never get past their trauma.... despite their brains and talent...)
"anything which is perfect is neither perfect nor moving" - JC about quantizing
I saw this concert; Jacob is special. And he has an open heart - not in the least elitist. He's my new online music teacher.
He loves music and wants everyone else to do so as well.
Every now and then I come back to this MIT session to just remind myself that sparkling intelligence and a deep emotionality can go hand in hand. Thx for being with us, Jacob. 😃
True! He breaks the myth of emotionally stunted nerds. He is a very socially intelligent musical genius. Thank God for him.
Quincy Jones has the second most grammy's with 27. I predict that Jacob will surpass that by age 40. He has 2 already and he's 22. This kids ceiling is higher than anyone I have ever seen.
true, ceiling's so high I can't even imagine the limits of it.
Except that genius often goes unrewarded until the rest of the world catches up with it decades later.
Don't know about that, don't downgrade Quincy either, he is top class. I'd say they are both top class musicians, no need to compare them anyways...
he has zero people enjoying his music though. his music is "look what I can do!" and nothing more. he is a pop sound artist.
@@jeffbartlett4551 True..Pet Sounds.
Jacob Collier is fascinating! He's so fast at everything and dives so deep. A gifted person who enjoys sharing his knowledge and experience
1:06:16. „Less is only more when you know what more is“. Some people just tilt when they face complexity 😁
Thats literally the scariest quote i ever heard, in good way😅
His voice is like the deep buzzing of a bumblebee that morphs into the total weightless hovering of a dragonfly before skipping up and down the scale like a butterfly. His total mastery of his vocal range is definitely impressive. That first song is like the dawning of a new day and the intricate busyness of all forms of nature. I can go on and on but I will sum this up as being the kind of marvelous experience that I will repeatedly replay!
And to think that some people still criticise him because of his voice?
@raymie Haters will hate. In the meantime, people all over the world get that wonderful Stevie-like sense of pure musical joy & freedom from hearing J’s music. To each their own. Like what you like. But dudes (it’s usually dudes), don’t bark at people that they shouldn’t like Jacob’s music. Who are these serious music experts? ...ok, so Herbie & Stevie & Quincy feel the soul in Jacob’s music... but we’re all supposed to listen to some crank on YT comments who has probably never released an album of their own music, much less made the remotest impact on creativity in the world? Jealousy is a bad look.
Cringe
@@unholylemonpledge9730 More like clap! Lol
- Hey Jacob, what is your vocal range?
- Yes
I always forget to close my mouth while watching Jacob
I've never connected with a comment more
I am so grateful to have had the chance to experience this particular expression of Jacob and some of his wonderful collaborators. He helps to fill in some of the gaps in between.
This guy is ridiculous. While Jacob is a talented composer, performer and musical thinker, his savant-like explication on the minutiae of mirror inversion (known by the idiots and those in the historical "no" as "negative harmony") might have you believe that an ingenious physicist is at work on some earth-shattering theory or at least demonstrating proficiency using some higher scientific nomenclature or logic. Please don't get me wrong: Jacob is undoubtedly a brilliant musical talent. Unfortunately, the degree of attention and coverage given to Jacob Collier as "visionary music theorist" really does this gifted young man a disservice, falsely ascribing prophetic qualities to Collier's work. In the whole, this should cause us to question what exactly is real and true about Jacob Collier.
Jacob: if you've read this, please don't think I'm attacking you. What you do is very impressive. I would recommend maintaining a greater awareness of the musico-historical and musico-theoretical record. It will keep you from feeling to the need to re-invent the wheel, and the better acquainted you become with it the more economical you'll become in allocating your efforts and energy to fixing only that which requires fixing.
Best to you.
David Fick I think he knows the giants‘ shoulders that he is standing on. He mentioned Bach in the interview. He gives credits to Gregorian chant, Strawinsky, Schönberg, Stevie Wonder, The Beatles, Michael Jackson, Sting and many others. You should also listen to his interviews with June Lee.
26:26 dat face "wait a sec did i just"

Alexander Marc I think he messed up the lyrics. Still funny!
Was here for the phone ringing but ended up watching the whole thing instead. And it was all worth it! Thank you Jacob and MIT right here from the PH.
I think I was as moved by the discussion as I was by the performance. As a musician, this level of talent makes me glorify God. You are a gift, Jacob Collier.
Did you really have to bring god into it?
@@artysanmobile Did you really have to try to tear someone’s comment apart instead of just scoffing and moving on? Let people be happy.
@@ThePlaguedOutlaw Yes. I’m a big fan of Jacob’s amazing musical mind and was genuinely offended by the irrelevant and inappropriate comment. I’m sorry you can’t grasp that, crusader.
@@artysanmobile I’m sorry you can grasp the fact that inspirational performances can make you glorify a higher being. It was only inappropriate and irrelevant in your eyes, so just leave it at that. Again, let people be happy. I assumed you being a fan of a musician so carefree that you’d associate with the idea of letting people be who they are.
@@ThePlaguedOutlaw It’s so perfectly on point that you can’t even acknowledge another viewpoint. After all, you are, by definition, absolutely correct. Right? Your self-satisfaction is but a silly fairy tale to billions around the world. That shouldn’t bother you one bit.

In the presence of genius. How fans of Jacob would dearly wish to have filled those empty seats!
Whenever a higher species of beings eventually come to earth and make themselves known, it would not surprise me if they a bunch of Jacob Colliers.
"Less is more only when you know what more is" what a true phrase from Jacob, I would also add that this is true in life overall because you can't trasncend what you never had, for example you can't be really humble if you havn't had lots of attention first, or be simple if you havnt been complicated, etc. There is something true about that.
My appreciation for the profoundly multifaceted musical genius of 22-year old Jacob Collier is especially enhanced by my years of musical training, while at the same time such an extraordinary gift makes a complete mockery of it. Nevertheless, such a gift should be inspiring to all of us in that it would require a generous and purposeful gift giver.
This needs so much more views! Jacob is the music, he thinks it like he talks and he talks it fabulously :D

Apart from being insanely inspirational to watch, this video reminds me off a funny story;
I was hitchhiking by myself on the east coast of Iceland standing outside Jökulsárlón waiting for a ride - Fall 2011. This man in a compact picks me up. We start driving and get to know one another. I am an architecture student at the time, the financial crisis, The new Harpa Concert Hall (designed by a firm I used to work for in Copenhagen). "Ah", he says - I have tickets to go there and see Bjork. Me (jokingly): Oh - can >I< get tickets to go there and see Bjork? He explains that the concert is in a few months, they are VIP tickets - he designed and built the instruments that are that signature sound of Bjork's Crystalline album! NO WAY. He is one of the only remaining organ craftsmen in the country! Once a year he drives around the ring road to all the churches to tune the organs in all the town's churches. I am blown away. He drops me off in Djúpivogur and I get to hear him play / tune the organ the following morning after almost freezing to death in my tent (hyperbole). ANYWAYS - I digress.
I later found this video!
