Soviet Paratroopers Break Bricks With Their Heads in Rare Cold War Training Footage (1990)

- On 15 May 1990, Soviet paratroopers and air force units staged a display of combat training and all-round military might at Kubinka Air Base near Moscow. The intended audience of their show of strength was Mr Tom King MP, the UK defence secretary who was on a four day visit to the USSR. As well as demonstrating hand-to-hand combat, the paratroopers took part in a large-scale jump training exercise. Mr King was also invited to inspect the cutting edge of Soviet military technology, from fighter and bomber aircraft to tanks, in a hangar on the base. The opening up of the USSR's military facilities to its historic adversary reflected the extent to which the Cold War had thawed by the spring of 1990.
