It *is* designed to disguise it, esp the servant's dance, but it's totally what's happening. Crazy like a fox.

It's not an easy trick...(I've done it) takes some planning and film moxie. Turn the 16mm camera up-side-down and load it with double-perf film...to make easy work of playing the scene backward in a projector/printer. With perfect direction and maybe a few takes it plays out perfectly...where the film ends is where Dali actually begins the scene e.g he has just taken the foil off the face of the bust. And yes...the dynamics of the servant seasoned this piece of cinema/genius very well.
