Thank you for this video, as a classical piano player I always struggled to make musical sounds with the guitar, and this tuning just opened up a whole new world for me
First he said he'd never do an unboxing video and then started doing regular unboxing videos. He hated C-major, now he's shilling for Big C-Major in the biggest way possible. What next Sean, reaction videos? smh.

In the British Isle I think this is called Orkney tuning, anyway you did say you were a Nick Drake guy and I suppose Elliot Smith brought you here however what comes to my mind is Joni Mitchell who liked a lighter tuning as she did not have the strenght in her fingers for mainstream tuning. Great lesson.
This is the same tuning I stumbled on through experimenting with drop C a few weeks ago. I've been loving it. Everything Sean says about it opening up different melodic and harmonic possibilities will blow your mind. I can't stop playing with this tuning. I have an electric in open D with these intervals and my acoustic is in open C.
In the neighborhood of Bron-Yr-Aur, and Friends, songs that seemed magical and impossible when I was just starting out and didn't know about alternate tunings.
Certainly breaking out of the standard breaks the norms and rules that have become habitual and inhibiting. Then suddenly having the struggle of mastering a new way map of the music land is a new vantage point to see differently or hear differently which is a call to creativity to come out and play. Introducing a fun way to continuing mastering old rules under new circumstances expands deeper understanding of the music. Nice surprise move........Thanks!
A 7 string guitar. Strings are all the same gauge/thickness/material. tuned ‘do re me fa so la te’. So you can make basic diatonic-scale music without even touching the fretboard. I call it the ‘diatar’

@@jpwaterman5104 Hi jP! I was finding so many open C tunings and the 3rd string not being E. I don't remember how I tuned CGCEGC... I think because I played open D as DADF#AD, which for my voice it was too high, so I went down a whole step and that's how I ended up where I am more than in standard tuning. A guy said to me when he saw me playing, "you play your guitar like a dulcimer."... or maybe he said, "like a Dobro", and not sure why he said that. I like the CGCEGC very much and not sure why, just that I adapted to it easiest. I have arthritis and also in this open C can play chords with 2 and 3 fingers which is easier for me too. I wish I knew what chords I'm playing as I do all by ear. So I run into problems when I want to play a song like the late great Sandi Denny's, "Who Knows Where The Time Goes?" There's some beautiful chords with that song and really wish I could do it in my kind of open C. I've written several of my best songs in that open C... and will post again on RUclips my version of Joni Mitchell's, "Both Sides Now" I play in open C. I pulled it because I didn't get many hits and also because my little camera sounded too tinny, so I'm making the big leap and will record in a pro studio (that I can't afford ha!) In 2 1/2 days I got 104 hits, 7 very nice comments, and 3 Subscribers. I hope I can do better next try as it is going to be my "debut" and will follow with my original songs in open C too. Have you posted on YT any songs in open C? I'm feeling in a limited realm now and want to try another tuning. I looked at Nashville tuning and for me it doesn't sound all that great, and just looked at Frank Gambale Tuning and it sounds not attractive enough to me. Maybe you'll like it at: ruclips.net/video/307QNIQAcqY/видео.html So right now I'm lost, and since you like the same open C tuning as I do, what other open tunings do you like? Thanks for your comment. I was surprised to find it as so many play open C in a different way of tuning I can't remember.
In my opinion, for the 3 bass strings, the late Ritchie Havens used the thumb technique. I think I’d use the thumb technique for the 3 bass strings, too.
Man for years I have neglected the string skipping stuff, never played with a pick to avoid learning it. I play finger style but have trouble playing chords this way. I guess it's time to re-learn guitar completely. 10/10
open C ( CGCGCE 6-1) is a great tuning. Hear it at its best in Devin Townsend ( DTP ) albums, he has used it across most of his career. did you do this because "elliott smith - ballad of big nothing?" haha, "owen - gazebo" is kind of like this tuning too, but more like CGCGCE, so you just have to tune the lower 3 strings like drop-C & leave the high 3 in standard, with just the b string tuned up one note/fret. which i guess would be kinda easier for newbies.
Got bored and mucked around with my strings and now it’s B, F#, B, F#, B, F# I absolutely love it , anyone else know what this tuning is , or have I gone too far this time ?
That would be Open B5 tuning (B being the root and F# being the 5 of the key). This sort of tuning has no third so is neither major or minor, I like a similar one a lot Open C5 (CGCGCC)
Thanks, Sean, I’m just now getting into open C thanks to Ariel Posen’s “One Last Thing” (check it out, everyone, it’s a frikkin’ masterpiece!) so your insights a super appreciated 🙏😁🎸
The whole point in numbering strings is to communicate with others about what you're doing. The "first" string is the lightest guage, highest pitch string. Actually, Sean, that would be my only complaint about your video. Too many people add to that confusion. You should just name the string properly once and leave it at that. Minor detail tho. Otherwise great video, one of the better open tuning vids I've seen. You packed some good details in there. Thanks.
great stuff... You should look into getting a cigar box guitar. only 3 or 4 strings, and they are all about this sort of thing.. Very fun stuff to play.
Yesss thanks for this! Can't wait to try it out :) I'm with you on the string numbers, it makes no sense to me when people refer to the first string as the sixth 😐
Great for the key of C, but what about when there's a key change in there somewhere? Don't you suddenly have to learn a whole new set of positions and chord shapes for everything?
