A small correction: By default, Mastodon has a 500 character limit for posts, not 5000. However, every instance can set its own limit, and tilde.zone has set it to 5000 characters.

That’s not a “correction”, you just don’t understand how federation works.
If many people decide to cut out a shitty person from their lives, that’s not because they have a monolithic hivemind. This is also the case on Mastodon - there are instances that are blocked by many servers because of posting CP, gore, etc. and the fact that admins don’t do anything to stop it.
That being said, if you don’t like the moderation on one instance, you can always move to another. Nobody is forcing independent instances to block certain servers, and there are plenty of "free speech" instances that don't block anyone whatsoever and have no content moderation.
P.S. Please show me the exact place where the Mastodon source code is “poisoned”
Thanks for the correction especially about Twitter profitability. But it really reflects poorly that you didn't even research well. Fortunately, it's not a main talking point, but I've seen this misinformation from many RUclipsrs.
Re: content moderation. Mods power trip a lot. A lot a lot. I have negative faith in community moderation efforts.
I would rather have 'community' mods power trip over one instance, than some kind of a shadow moderators committee power trip over the whole platform that hosts millions of users.
Would you mind pointing me to the exact place in the codebase though? It shouldn't be hard to find, since GitHub keeps pretty much the entire code history.

Twitter legitimately contributed to my depressive thoughts during the pandemic. It was a constant cycle of logging in, scrolling, getting mad and sad, scorlling, and then going to sleep. Its scary how optimized it is to make you angry and to make you feed that anger. Glad im no longer on that platform.
Totally that. Spent too many years there with people full of psychological problems. When I finally deleted it I felt so much better and I'm way more productive since then. People who read that really should consider deleting it.

I left it about five years ago and haven't missed it - also quit Facebook two years ago for a number of reasons but "the straw that broke the camel's back" were members of my own family going "antivax" and plastering their nonsense over Facebook.
Fortunately, I still have a good relationship with those family members because I "turned off" their nonsense rather than reacting to it, and now we just don't talk about certain things when we meet up in real life.
Both Twitter and Facebook are cesspits - and LinkedIn is simply a "cattle market" for middle managers and marketing people to parade themselves up and down in front of their bosses and recruitment consultants. All they ever do is post pictures of sunset beaches overlaid with a clever quote by a dead person that, in life, was a lot smarter than they are.

I like Mastodon, I'm glad is getting new people. But yeah, it isn't Twitter. Some people are worried a bunch of toxic people are going to get into Mastodon, I don't really worry about that, they will eventually move into bad instances or quit the platform entirely.

I think Twitter usage/setup might be a bit easier than Mastodon, but the complexity of choosing your Mastodon instance compares to the complexity of choosing your email service, which is something people also managed over the last 25 years.
The problem is that you are not joining a community when you make a Hotmail or Gmail account. If you are not on an instance, you can watch another's "Local" feed, and you can respond to a thread on the server, but you cannot post a thread on the remote server. Choosing which instance you want to make home has too much consequence. There is a real problem that is not being addressed here.
Agreed, Mastodon is supposed to be a communication platform with microblogging vibes for building a niche community, not just a content-consuming machine.
We don't need Mastodon to replace Twitter tho, Mastodon is not commercialized and should keep that way. Speaking of the fediverse, would like to see if you make an entire video about it?
Also the real Chad makes their own blogging website and forum built from scratch (or use any existing free and open source framework such as Hugo and Discourse).
Your last point is similar to the "destroy the evil record companies and let the artists sell their own music online" argument - that is, "nice in theory" but when many people simultaneously are clamoring for your attention to "buy my music" or "use my blogging forum", it all gets lost is a cacophony of noise.
The idea is sound but unlikely to work in the real world.

I've tried Mastodon. It doesn't fill that same niche and feeling that Twitter does. I like how Twitter's search function works a LOT, and I really want to find a place like Twitter was before elon.

Hot take: I know its hard to imagine but the way I use and experience Twitter is completely different to your experience and for me, it would be a shame to lose it.
I agree and it annoys me to see so many people claiming that it’s totally ok if twitter disappeared. I can understand if there are people that don’t like it. But I have had positive experiences with it mostly. I learn things and engage with philosophers, authors, scientists, and others in a way that is different from any other medium. I don’t want to “move away” from twitter because I don’t see other options as being “the same” or even similar enough to do so. Over the years, I have had evolving opinions about twitter and I haven’t always appreciated it the way that I do now.
because that's the main narrative. Social media works on engagement, it's true, but you have some leverages to control it: the first part is choosing who to engage with (if you engage with toxic people, you'll see more toxic content); second part is to hide the toxic people. But it's way easier it seems to give all the agency to one person setting up a Mastodon instance and see if you like it.

Mastodon reminds me immensly of Usenet (newsnet) which was the "forum" of the Internet right up until the late 90s. Decentralized infrastructure was its biggest strength (just like Mastodon). But one of its biggest failings (just like Mastodon) was its lack of moderation which eventually turned many of its groups into cesspits of hatred, porn and spam. I bet most people haven't heard of it now. I wonder if Mastodon will succeed where Usenet eventually failed (once the general public got hold of it)

The model of inter-federated social platforms seems to better reflect how ideological communities tend to interact. A person has a "home" with a relatively like-minded group of people, and there are neighbors who speak similarly. In that model, one doesn't have to deal with fringe/extreme positions on a regular basis, nor the associated outrage. Adventurous types can go interact directly with strangers, but an overly centralized platform robbed people of a social "home" with their own sorts, and a lot of people ended up getting radicalized (to the left or the right). I suspect our social psyche needs a "home" like this, because for the most part, people are not good at interacting with those who hold different positions on really fundamental questions... we end up arguing about policies or "vibes," but rarely the root philosophical issues.
I think Github will be the true twitter replacement just you wait. You'll see..... they'll all see! Ps: this video is different from the usual, I like! Nice to see that you're branching out.
Unfortunately Github is also censor-happy. They banned the tornado cash code and bent the knee to government pressure.

Federation is easy. It's like e-mail. You can set up your own instance, you can find free e-mail providers in the internet, you can set up e-mail for your company, etc.

i agree with your assessment of twitter being kind of toxic and that it has a lot of feuds going on but probably the same thing can be said about youtube or other social networks, although maybe not quite at the same scale
i mostly follow tech companies and/or oss tools/apps and wasn't exposed to any of the bad parts of twitter ... don't think i'll leave twitter any time soon :)
You are technically only exposed to the bad parts of twitter if you did not curate everything yourself. It's why i and most people i have helped with curating their stuff. have been enjoying most social media's without getting furious on some dumb shit being posted.

I quit Twitter about 5 years ago, Facebook a couple of years ago and haven't looked back at either since - my mood also improved by doing so being I stopped being like the old guy waving his walking stick and scaring the birds eating his grass seed in the garden who just come back and eat the seed again when he goes back indoors. That sums up completely pointless arguments on social media anyway.
Communications between groups of people generally becomes more friendly when they have a common topic to discuss, which is why I personally enjoy technical discussions on RUclips when I am subscribed to channels of particular interest to me.
Whilst I've not used Mastadon yet, I get that it is focused around communities of people that can enforce their own local rules and I always adhere to philosophy (even in Linux) of "use what someone else created or build it your way" - and therefore is something I will look into joining.
But Twitter and Facebook are just complete cesspits of the worst traits of humanity - including extreme narcissism.

I'd love to hear your opinion of RSS, I recently was thinking of how to reinvent social media and when I enjoyed the web most, circa 2004-2006, and realized that what worked well then, still exists today, and that's a feed of different sources, albeit a blog, a podcast, and even a youtube channel can all be put into a syndication feed, and what is most beautiful beyond the chronology of the feed, the fact you can categorize it, is that you're outside of the scope of adverts and algorithms in the feed. I have been experimenting with self-hosted RSS readers with some failures and successes; and would love to hear your opinion of this. :-)

@@chandlerbing7570 Did you skip over the rest of the video? The whole point is that these instances can be isolated into their own bubbles through community consensus and defederation. You can say anything you want, but no one is obliged to listen to you against their will.
@@rkvkydqf users don’t get to choose which instances get banned, the admins do.
@I am Rox The admins of smaller instances often ask for the opinions of the users before defederating from another instance. And even then, if you don't agree with the decision, you can always migrate to another instance - many of which have an explicit "anything goes" policy. Both of those things are a big improvement compared to Twitter, where the decision to ban a certain account from the entire platform is taken by a single group of moderators, and you have no way of influencing or circumventing the decision.
I’ve never had a twitter account and I never will. I don’t think there’s been a social media (I’ve been using computers since 1997) that has done more to damage the mental health of its users like twitter has

Wish there was a link to that list of Mastodon servers in the show notes. This really explained some of the quirks of Twitter I've just internalized over my use of it these years. Somehow I manage to curate my timeline so that it doesn't piss me off as much. Created a Mastodon account on a LGBTQ tech instance in April but couldn't connect with other instances very easily, so I deleted it. Now most of the instances are closed.
Nice video. I would really like if you went deeper into the Fediverse in another video, with subjects like PeerTube.
Some insight on identity spoofing, content flagging, verified accounts and micropayment handling over these federated networks would've made this vid better. Thanks for the comparison, regardless. IMHO, the trend feels like a step back in social networking.. centrality has been what pulled people in.
I've played with the fediverse including Mastodon and eh, I don't really like it? This was a few years ago, but I found it cumbersome to filter and I didn't like how anything I commented on would be on the instance's main page. I'm more of a lurker while Mastodon seems to be for more social peeps.

Even my Twitter clone doesn't look as much as Twitter, but that's because I designed it to look like the last version of Twitter (with the popup tweets and giant banner) and I stopped working on it, so now it looks very different from the current Twitter.

I loved techtwitter made so many connection and found mentors and etc. But jumped to mastodon. It takes some getting used to and changing domains is a Pain still
People thinking that federated platforms can't succeed forget that email exists and has a large user base. Yes, self-hosting is not feasible for everyone, just for enthusiasts. But the majority will end up using commercial services like GMail (or AOL fwiw).

I had some of the most toxic experiences of my life on twitter. Some guy created impersonator accounts of me over a dumb argument and the twitter support team wouldn't suspend the account for months. In a way I'm happy twitter is collapsing.
Ratio first applied to a single tweet when someone said something so stupid or objectionable that they received more replies than likes. Sometime in the last year or so gen z has appropriated it to be some kind of bully tactic where someone just posts "RATIO XD" and it's succesful if they get more likes than the OP.

I feel like mastedon is a weird cross between reddit and twitter, and discord already is serving the purpose of allowing independent communities. It is possible that mastedon will do a better job of carrying the torch of old forum culture, which previously I would have said discord is the closest reasonable option we had.

@43_XA_Ashutosh Sononey Yeah this is true, I haven't used it enough to determine how important that is. In my eyes the main reason you would want to post globally is to self promo though and I'm not sure many more people would see that anyway in such a situation. Otherwise I feel like you would be better off just sticking to the smaller community you know has nice discourse.
The forum culture was the golden age imho. I'm in favour of a decentralised internet, but the main drawback will always be the corners where hate speech lurks. This really is inevitable regardless of what social media model you choose. I suspect forums worked out so well because discussion was organised topically, so people headed for what they were interested in and conversations were more productive. But put a crowd together and the dark side of human psychology emerges - fights eventually break out. The option to self-police seems the best way, such as with self- governing wikis. Wikipedia has it's flaws but is a good example of internet self-policing in progress.

I think trying to make sure that the awful people just dont exist on the internet or change their minds is a lost cause, just shove them in their own little corner and leave everyone else to pick their own corner and move on. Obviously this runs the risk of echo chambers but echo chambers really only exist in certain corners spesifically designed for a political or idealogical purpose, so I believe the echo chamber fears are greatly exadgerated (at least on the platform level).
@@SuzD0n The organization of forums is easily what makes it superior to any social media. You stick to what you were interested in and the fights were minimal. Social media always felt being packed into an elevator and trying to talk to like-minded people.
Mastodon is not a social platform as the ones we know today. And it's fine, I totally relate and understand some people prefer to have a smaller community of similiar peep. It's quite sad however to see the idea of internet as a "global space" totally crushed and the reaction to the everpresent filter bubble is just to jump into other bubbles.. even smaller too. Twitter, Facebook and other platforms are indeed full of toxic people, it's true.. but it's just as life. Our worldviews are forged by our experiences and content we see; limiting ourselves to smaller and smaller niches can lead us to a better internet experience, of course... but at the cost to see only the smallest part of the reality. It's a difficult tradeoff to balance, the one between a better social network experience and the knowledge of our world/society.
Although I definitely agree that echo chambers and filter bubbles are an issue, I also think that the desire not to be exposed to toxic content online (or even just the kind of content that you don't vibe with) is totally understandable. In real life, we often don't have control over who we're interacting with - you don't choose your parents, your neighbors, colleagues, acquaintainces or even passers-by on the street, and a lot of people work with customers at their job, who they also have to serve regardless of their political beliefs, taste and even behavior (to a certain extent).
Internet, on the other hand, is pretty much the only place in life where you get to fully choose which content and what people to engage with. It's the only place where you can 100% set your own rules and boundaries, and cut toxic people out with no financial or social repercussions. What's the definition of toxic? You get to decide. You think that people who dislike Zelda are toxic? All power to you, block them everywhere
And I think that having a "safe space" like that is good. The majority of people certainly don't get the privilege of maintaining their 'bubble' irl, and rest assured, they get exposed to all sorts of opinions and views at work, school, college and family table. But I think that on social media, the desire to engage and be exposed to new things should come from the users, not from the social media corporations playing saviors.
@@WolfgangsChannel and I totally see your point and even if I work - also - with social media my online "social life" is mainly on private groups on Whatsapp, Telegram or Discord. I think the only way to strike a balance between the two extremes (interacting only with people like me vs being able to interact or see also thing we like less) can be reached only by a new kind of education that, starting from the school, is able to teach everyone that modern citizenships is formed through digital media and internet too. Being able to discern, dissect, absorb and even reject informations is crucial to form informed voting people. I repeat myself: there's not an easy solution to this problem and I totally understand people willing to block or hide anything that they do not like. I hope this kind of solution will not lead to bigger problems in the future.
The "dev build in production" is actually a false allegation. The proof is that the browser was attempting to read source maps and getting 404's. The way source maps work is that there's a comment and the end of a script file that points to them.
Those comments have existed since before Elon. It's not a dev build, just comments that point to source maps only accessible internally. Those comments actually make sense in context, because sometimes they have to debug the prod build.

Nope, you got that wrong. Twitter was already flipped upside down. Now that all the employees that never showed up for work in the first place, are gone, Twitter now has a chance of surviving
Good video. I never liked twitter, I just tried mastodan. I like it. I like the server I picked. The people are nice and interesting. They like science, rock climbing etc.
My only problem, it is not a big thing, but I am and not interested in reading gay stuff. If you know a server that likes science, rock climb, etc without as much gay stuff please comment.
Not sure what exactly you mean by gay stuff, but you can use filters to hide posts on the timeline

The fact that instaces can block other instances just rubs me the wrong way.
You can move from an instance to another instance, so if one you want to view is blocked you can get it. So why is this an issue?
@@birdbrainiac Because I would like an instance that doesn't block anything and keeping track of when an instance starts blocking something is tedious. Also most instances that don't block some content are also blocked by instances that do.
Don't get me wrong, I want to block stuff. I just want to do so myself (and not be blocked from other instances)

Mentioning blue checkmark without saying what it become in latest years is only telling part of the story. I'm very far to be 'Elon's boys', but at least Twitter became funny again.
It became funny in spite of Elon's efforts, not thanks to them. Moreover, the moderators now ban all accounts that parody Elon (even those that have "Parody" in the name - which Elon said should be ok). So much for free speech
Threads is the middle ground, since they're about to integrate with ActivityPub
It wouldn't surprise me if they rug pull the federation functionality.
Threads doesn't really need it to become huge, they've already hit 100 million users in under a week.
