This year we ditched Discord, WhatsApp, Google Search and Google Android and moved to Element, Signal, Brave Search and CalyxOS! We've synced our RUclips channel to Odysee as well. No regrets ditching any of them - still figuring out Element though. For anyone watching in 2024, revolt chat is a really nice developing open-source alternative to discord. No mobile apps yet, but the interface is just like discord, you've got text channels, roles, a few bots (including Remix for music), and they have voice chats too.

Just awesome. I got invited to a group on Discord, today. I was interested, so I thought I'd accept the invitation. Now? I'm not so sure I want to accept. Sigh. Well, that's, that, I guess. Socializing sucks for me y'all. It feels like I'll never know what socializing with people is like, because of all the random, weird, interfering, crap I summon, like this, each time I try.
Ugghl The problem with leaving discord is that's where some of the communities I want to engage with live. But this vid is certainly a good reminder that of what Discord is. I need to investigate some of the alternative clients deeper maybe. In the future, lets all just go back to IRC and PHPBB plz?
Why not include Teamspeak in your recommend list? I have warned about usedata sellout on Discord since the beginning and kept my Teamspeak server open for a year until everyone left for Discord, which then forced me to remove it from the server due to no reason to keep monitoring it for security (possible breaches and spam)
All these kids are taught that it's hip whiteout understanding the obvious signs that you have no privacy. It amuses me when people think having some anime avatar will hide their identity. Use Matrix/Element. And yeah, when someone tried making a discord client for 3DS they got banned immediately. Thanks for the recommendation about ublock and simplelogin, though!
Well, I'm disappointed about Issue 2 as I've regrettably sent some messages on Discord I would like to delete in full but I have done most of the steps you've talked about (aside from the third-party sources breaking tos and convincing a friend to move over onto another service). Time to clean up my account before it gets worse.
You can no longer hide your phone from discord, if your IP address is flagged by discord after making multiple accounts, and will force you to register an email and phone number
I came to this video because I need to leave discord, as I don't approve of their new TOS. I think someday I will need to move to something like IRC, but my friends and family are centralized on discord, so I'm kinda screwed there.
I personally got off discord a while ago because of some of the trust and safety issues & incompetence with getting rid of pedos and stuff, and the security stuff gives me no desire to go back. I currently message my friends in a sms group chat which isn’t the best but it’s probably better than discord.
I never used discord before in my whole life and am very technically savvy so I would love ❤️ to start using it since I don’t have any friends offline except 3 from college who I’m starting to lose touch with.
Damn it I wish I hadn't clicked this video lol I was looking for a third party app to run discord because I think it hogs bandwidth from Monster Hunter Rise (which gives me disconnect issues) but as someone who's deleted FB, Twitter and blocks router access from his smart tvs, the privacy concerns here hit me on a personal level. Great video though, thanks for the headsup!
The problem also is that if a power admin bans you, there is no way to appeal. I got banned from the deadmau5 discord for asking a question and i mentioned him @deadmau5#0001 and didn't realise that the rules had been updated saying don't mention deadmau5 (he could turn off mentions). I then apologised and corrected my mistake and then woke up the next day to find myself banned. No option to appeal or anything. When I got in touch with discord, to message the admins, I had to be friends with someone who part of the deadmau5 discord to get back in or something. Discord should take responsibility for admins. The day discord is brought out, is the day it dies out.
Kinda weird how the devs don’t patch this stuff. Also, the scandals are kinda scary. I feel like the creators and users need to be equal. Ps. Their marketing is pretty cool.
I'm rewatching this actually. I got 2 family members to use signal but.... that's not enough but progress. I'll probably be using matrix/element for community stuff or dicord like group chat
This directly plays into other topics like live streamer CohhCarnage who says "support developers and dont hate companys which affects the former. Everything is Chinese (only in America but he is blind) and thinks, just because things got bad, everyone should accept Chinese CCP influence, bad malicious practives and more instead of supporting smaller buisnesses. PS: topics range from Ubisoft and end with Epic Games doing deals which would be illegal outside the internet.
Partially because of this video and others, I am leaving discord as late as December. Some friends will be moving with me but won't be leaving discord.
Discord is terrible. They also selectively censor and disproportionately punish based off political ideology. My gaming community (a large one at that) moved to Guilded as a result.
Yup. Ik he doesn't seem to like bringing politics into these stuff which I understand, but this is one of the biggest problems in Discord (and Big Tech in general) along with the data collection. It should at least be mentioned even from a neutral view standpoint.
It really sucks, I use discord everyday for hours at a time, talking to my friends and playing bots. I can’t imagine leaving, but if there is ever another similar application that rises in popularity or that my friends are willing to move to I’d leave right away ):
I would say Guilded, but wait until they sort their stuff. They should be 100% ready for the public in the last month of Q1 2022 (April), but this is only my guess.
Sparrow Moon That's excactly my problem as well: No other similar platform is popular enough and has most of the features of discord, and therefore my friends and other contacts don't want to leave it
Matrix/Element are close to bridging the gap in terms of features in regards to Discord. But what Discord does is just too good for me to leave. Quickly sharing my current game as a live stream is very important to me and my friends as we are all visually impaired and helping each other - often times quickly - is very much important. Also, I don't want to rely on another service - Jitsi in this case - to do my audio video calling. Luckily, Matrix is getting native support through a recent proposal - woohoo! I see a lot of potential in Matrix and Element, but it's still too young to just throw at my novice friends and be like, "use this now!" xD I use it, mainly for bridges actually, and it works well. Just wish updating said bridges was easier, but thats a sysops thing that im too lazy to implement... ^^;
Rewatching this video, I realise it is a great breakdown. I was on the fence of downloading it or keeping using it as a web app and now I have the answer. I wish I was using another service for voice chat but alas I gotta use discord for both personal and work reasons.
Thanks for the breakdown and history without the snarky eye-rolling comments. I appreciate it. I've been doing my research on the company recently and this was super helpful.
I'm right now working on self-hosting my matrix server as an alternative for discord thanks for the very informative video. I knew discord wasn't privacy respecting but i didn't know it was that bad. Just uninstalled it everywhere and will only use it in the browser from now on
As a programmer, i would love to get to getter with some people with experience with open-source projects, and make a truly secure, but discord like, platform.
I am ignorant of any others experience however I have not once in my whole life throughout nearly 20 years of life joined a discord server that wasn't unimaginably toxic, I honestly don't know if I'm just considerably disfortunate or rather simply incapable of making friends, either aren't very far fetched to be completely truthfull, but put plainly every meaningfull instance Ive tryed to make conversion with anyone on any discord I have ever joined I have been grammatically battered constantly in every occasion for quite frankly the most nonsensicl of ideas , its like every individual I meet there simply must find a reason to yell at me and I know it's the most expected thing for a toxic person to say but I really dont think I'm a toxic person, I always read the rules all the way through and I always try to be as polite as I can to everyone, even if people are fighting I try my best to always stay out of it and yet every one I meet most every time even in community's I really enjoyed before and had the nicest people ive ever met and I'll get invited to there discord and get chewed up and spit out by everyone I try to talk to, even people I knew before joining the discord just gain this mob mentality against me and I'll never say anything that's offensive or inappropriate or anything I'll show up and be like hi and I'll just get picked apart from head to toe by every person there as If I had just stabbed somebody to death just by simply being there and now I don't even talk to anyone on discord anymore unless I know them irl because everyone else I meet there is mean to me and I just don't know why but every time it's like I just punched a wasps nest now I'll join a discord and I'll at most talk to a mod (which are generally pretty cool people and I'm sure most people are on discord are to in general) at this point I never risk talking to anyone and just use discord to give me updates on whatever the discord is about because I'll do one thing somebody didn't like for the most random reason ever and then I'll never be able to show my face there ever again for the rest of human history and its never happened anywhere else (well except middle school but we all know how that goes lol) but seriously it's like I'm some dark harvenger of the apocalypse or something like it genuinely made me angry at times because I just can't understand why everyone seems to hate me so much like it's some sort of primal instinct to avoid me at all costs :(
Serious question (as it is debated in my circle of friends from time to time): Do they also record contents of video or audio streams? I mean, recording clicks and messages is kinda cheap on the data use side. But then again, it would not be the first service to exploit pretty much any kind of information it can get its hands on, even if it meant larger amounts of video and audio data to be stored.
I mainly use discord as a track app for my excersises , repetitions and progress , I really find it well organised (even for personal use not a community ) unlike any other apps I used. (Kind of making personal “books” on the form of for your specific uses ) + it’s not discord only that do that , I bet if you have ever read all the papers you agree to before using an app (or even your phone ) you would find yourself deciding or to be “tracked” continuously in some ways or never using a device ever again. (They let you chose - and if you chose to don’t agree they don’t allow you to their app or device , so you chose it in a way by yourself , no one is forcing you to use it. ) + there are ways to prevent some of the points if you have read the TOS and you use vpn or apps that hide your ip , so opening it true them or else. )
I like Signal, but I hate that the desktop app just relies on your Windows password to lock your entire system rather than having something password protection on the app itself that will time out if it hasn't been used in a while. It's been brought up numerous times, but they have zero intention on adding any type of encryption in-app.
tbh its really easy to end2end enrypt discord using rsa idk if there is an extension for but it can basically work like: - it crates a rsa pk sk pair, and puts the pk on ur bio - then while ur talking with others discord can automatically check their bio for pk, if they one it automatically encrypts the message before sent if they dont have pk in their bio, there can be a button to share the extension with ur friend
Here's the thing, that requires modification of the client (e.g. BetterDiscord), which is against Discord TOS. The benefit of encrypting your messages on Discord immediately gets offset by the fact that Discord is now willing to ban both you and the other party's accounts at their leisure, at any time, without any notice. It's almost like they don't want encryption of any kind on their platform; otherwise it would be provided by default.
@@DimiDimit While using an external tool to encrypt the data sent to someone seems interesting and plausible, it’s still just a small bandaid on an otherwise gaping privacy issue on Discord’s end. I’d much rather use and support alternatives that actually uphold secure communication protocols, rather than try to “stick it to the man” and hide my personal messages from a company who actively harvests them.
It doesnt help that their custome support is awful, I had my account taken away from me, over a month ago and I still haven't had anyone help me get it back

Oh man, the new team speak is looking better and better
thanks, you have open my eyes very wide. your a good man
Why not include Teamspeak in your recommend list? I have warned about usedata sellout on Discord since the beginning and kept my Teamspeak server open for a year until everyone left for Discord, which then forced me to remove it from the server due to no reason to keep monitoring it for security (possible breaches and spam)
Oof at private messages not being encrypted :\
That's really important to know!
Joined your Matrix. Was already using it and I'm bullish, looks very promising.
XMPP is better for privacy, affordability and freedom hands down

@@climatechangedoesntbargain9140 Do you use iPhone?
@@theesteward9150 no, I use a Fairphone
You can no longer hide your phone from discord, if your IP address is flagged by discord after making multiple accounts, and will force you to register an email and phone number
There is something I appreciate about both Discord and Reddit; sections for communities based around topics, subjects, and passions.
That is a great thing but things like Matrix can have that too! - S
I left discord cause it had too many toxic ppl. Especially animation fan groups. Just disgusting what ppl do to feel entitled
I came to this video because I need to leave discord, as I don't approve of their new TOS.
I think someday I will need to move to something like IRC, but my friends and family are centralized on discord, so I'm kinda screwed there.
I recently deleted my discord server with over 8000 members :)
I personally got off discord a while ago because of some of the trust and safety issues & incompetence with getting rid of pedos and stuff, and the security stuff gives me no desire to go back. I currently message my friends in a sms group chat which isn’t the best but it’s probably better than discord.
One time a deleted a year worth of DMs by hand because I was done talking to the person and I didn't want them to have my side of the messages
Mumble is MVP! I never really used Discord that much. If it uses Electron, I run the other way.
I never used discord before in my whole life and am very technically savvy so I would love ❤️ to start using it since I don’t have any friends offline except 3 from college who I’m starting to lose touch with.
Wow! I am glad I found this video. I will never join Discord now. Thanks for the information!
forgot to mention all the pedophiles on discord
Damn it I wish I hadn't clicked this video lol
I was looking for a third party app to run discord because I think it hogs bandwidth from Monster Hunter Rise (which gives me disconnect issues) but as someone who's deleted FB, Twitter and blocks router access from his smart tvs, the privacy concerns here hit me on a personal level.
Great video though, thanks for the headsup!
Thanks!
I am leaving discord and moving to signal. Thanks for the video and additional info about the company.
Discord made me stress out so much, made me become obsessed with it. So glad I uninstalled it, improved my mental health.
What about TeamSpeak3? If you're only interested in the voip aspect.
Discord absolutely butchered teamspeak, people aren't going to revert
This is so much better than the Moon video
Thanks for this!! Great video
Glad you enjoyed it! - S
*matrix has entered the chat*
Henry: Kinda Discod alternative is Matrix
*matrix has left the chat*
Partially because of this video and others, I am leaving discord as late as December. Some friends will be moving with me but won't be leaving discord.
Discord is terrible. They also selectively censor and disproportionately punish based off political ideology. My gaming community (a large one at that) moved to Guilded as a result.
Yup. Ik he doesn't seem to like bringing politics into these stuff which I understand, but this is one of the biggest problems in Discord (and Big Tech in general) along with the data collection. It should at least be mentioned even from a neutral view standpoint.
@@Neko_Mario Yeah definitely. Its a major problem and just pointing it out neutrally is a great way to go about it respectfully.
I'd like it if there's subtitles cause my brain just can't keep up with the speed of you delivering the information.
Sparrow Moon That's excactly my problem as well: No other similar platform is popular enough and has most of the features of discord, and therefore my friends and other contacts don't want to leave it
I moved from discord by switching to guilded, I copied all my data from discord and put it in a html file so I can keep it a archive
Matrix/Element are close to bridging the gap in terms of features in regards to Discord.
But what Discord does is just too good for me to leave. Quickly sharing my current game as a live stream is very important to me and my friends as we are all visually impaired and helping each other - often times quickly - is very much important. Also, I don't want to rely on another service - Jitsi in this case - to do my audio video calling. Luckily, Matrix is getting native support through a recent proposal - woohoo!
I see a lot of potential in Matrix and Element, but it's still too young to just throw at my novice friends and be like, "use this now!" xD I use it, mainly for bridges actually, and it works well. Just wish updating said bridges was easier, but thats a sysops thing that im too lazy to implement... ^^;
The fact that their name is discord should say it all.
It was lot better when I grew up 🆙 in the early to mid nineties when all our relationships and friendships were all in person and face to face.
I guess the problem with all the alternatives is that none of my friends want to move.
Wow never realized how invasive this is, and I know my friends won't want to switch or even care sadly. :/
Glad it was helpful!
Thanks for the info!
Byebye Dscord! (AT LEAST FROM MY PC)
Thank you for the heads-up! :)
How timely. I was just this week starting to get into Discord. Now I'm thinking I won't anymore. 🤔
You never mentioned the raids on discord. aka server "Nukes"
14:18 Why do you say that Telegram would be gross?
I'm right now working on self-hosting my matrix server as an alternative for discord
thanks for the very informative video. I knew discord wasn't privacy respecting but i didn't know it was that bad. Just uninstalled it everywhere and will only use it in the browser from now on
As a programmer, i would love to get to getter with some people with experience with open-source projects, and make a truly secure, but discord like, platform.
That would be a cool project. I don't have much faith in my skills though, still a student in programming. But I do have experience with C#.
(Kind of making personal “books” on the form of for your specific uses )
+ it’s not discord only that do that , I bet if you have ever read all the papers you agree to before using an app (or even your phone ) you would find yourself deciding or to be “tracked” continuously in some ways or never using a device ever again.
(They let you chose - and if you chose to don’t agree they don’t allow you to their app or device , so you chose it in a way by yourself , no one is forcing you to use it. )
+ there are ways to prevent some of the points if you have read the TOS and you use vpn or apps that hide your ip , so opening it true them or else. )
not RUclips showing me this video right after I become invested in using Discord
I like Signal, but I hate that the desktop app just relies on your Windows password to lock your entire system rather than having something password protection on the app itself that will time out if it hasn't been used in a while. It's been brought up numerous times, but they have zero intention on adding any type of encryption in-app.
tbh its really easy to end2end enrypt discord using rsa
idk if there is an extension for but
it can basically work like:
- it crates a rsa pk sk pair, and puts the pk on ur bio
- then while ur talking with others discord can automatically check their bio for pk, if they one it automatically encrypts the message before sent
if they dont have pk in their bio, there can be a button to share the extension with ur friend
i think there was a PGP extension for betterdiscord
Here's the thing, that requires modification of the client (e.g. BetterDiscord), which is against Discord TOS. The benefit of encrypting your messages on Discord immediately gets offset by the fact that Discord is now willing to ban both you and the other party's accounts at their leisure, at any time, without any notice.
It's almost like they don't want encryption of any kind on their platform; otherwise it would be provided by default.
@@jard You _can_
gpg -ear | wl-copy
but that's just a workaround.
@@jard Indeed. It's still cool that you _can,_ though you shouldn't.
I shared this video on discord 😅
It doesnt help that their custome support is awful, I had my account taken away from me, over a month ago and I still haven't had anyone help me get it back
