    Thanks for posting this video. If you weren't aware, there are devices called "Clecos", that will hold the alignment of the parts being riveted. If you're having to replace a bunch of rivets, they'll come in super handy.
    My Alum Jonboat has solid rivets every 1" at the bottom edge where the side boards meet the bottom skin. Unfortunately, I don't know the brand or year of my little pleasure yacht, but it's a well built little 15 footer, with probably 1500+ rivets in it, no leaks. Only problem that I have, is that 2 of the ribs have cracked, inside the floor, at the centerline.
    Stay safe, stay thirsty!

    You should be able to find an air chisel, with some bits, for around $40 - $60 dollars on Amazon. Solid rivets, set with these tools, are much stronger than your standard "pop rivets". I'm fairly certain it is not recommended to use sealed/waterproof pop rivets when making repairs to things like boats, where strength is crucial.

    I’m a aircraft mechanic and an aluminum boat owner. I was cringing as I watched this video. But I read several comments and instead of trashing this video I want to help the other boat owners. If you want the tools and supplies also the knowledge to perform correct watertight “without sealant” aluminum repairs think aviation. First for the proper tools you can buy online from Aircraft Tool Supply, Aircraft Spruce, and many others. They will have the rivets also, and Aircraft Spruce will have sheets of aluminum. Next for the proper technique, proper rivet spacing, and proper rivet “shop head” dimensions just watch a few videos from aircraft repair mechanics. While the videos supplied by boat mechanics may show their best practices, they probably were never trained in aluminum repair. Please understand I’m not trashing this mechanic, I’m just offering advice to a never leaking, stronger, permanent repair, Without sealant. I am glad at least this video didn’t just smear silicone around a pop rivet and call it good. Great for being on the right track, now on to a better repair.

      All I did was remove some rivets, make my floor repairs, and reinstall rivets, of the same size and type. I didn't replace any aluminum or change any rivet spacing. I chose to add a dab of marine-grade silicone to help ensure a good watertight seal. Probably 99% of it was displaced when the rivets were installed. This boat has been in use for over three years without any issues. No loose or broken rivets and no leaks. I feel very confident in my repair, but I do appreciate your input.

    How much does one of those guns cost? I've got some hand riveting guns but most rivets that can be used in them aren't solid. I did find one type that is domed at two ends that is better.

    The second i pull the trigger on the air gun the rivet goes flying across the garage. HOW!? are you holding it in place?? Ive done everything these rivets will not set in time before the bit moves and they go flying

      Sorry, but I'm not understanding how this could happen. The rivet tool and air hammer should hold the rivet in place and react against the backer (hammer in the video) to compress it. The only suggest I might have is to reduce the air pressure on the air hammer to around 45 psi. That should be enough to compress the rivet and have better control of the hammer. Hope that helps.

    • @barryrobison2073
      @barryrobison2073  Год назад +3

      @@claytonkelley2580 The rivet goes in from the outside and the rivet tool and air hammer go on top of the rounded rivet head, holding it in place. The backing bar (hammer) is held firmly on the rivet on the inside, giving the air hammer something to react against. A few short bursts of the air hammer should peen the end of the rivet on the inside of the boat. There should be no physical way the rivet can fly out of the hole.

    • @barryrobison2073
      @barryrobison2073  2 месяца назад +2

      According to the NJ Rivet Company, you need a rivet long enough to reach through the two pieces being joined, plus 1.5 to 2 times the diameter of the rivet shaft. This will give you the proper “clinching” length.

    Im currently redoing my floor and transom on my 1988 starcraft fs14. What psi did you use to drive these rivets in?

    • @barryrobison2073
      @barryrobison2073  Год назад +3

      I believe I ran mine around 70 psi. I have read that you can lower it to 40-45 psi if you are having trouble controlling the rivet gun. The important things are to keep the rivet tool and the bucking bar square to the rivet to get a proper crush.

    Thanks nice video, Question If I may? Where can I get those rivits, what type are they, can I get them in up to 2 inch lengths and what do you consider a good sealant, I am rebuilding Canoes this winter and I replace anything that is bad and the wood in back had a few rivits and I want to keep it uniform so the customer gets what they pay for. I live by Karma so.

    • @barryrobison2073
      @barryrobison2073  Год назад +1

      I got mine from Amazon. They were only 3/8" or 1/2" long. I have never seen or used 2" solid rivets. Amazon does have some 2" rivets, but most of them were made of steel. Make sure you know the size (diameter) of your existing rivets and the material they're made of. Dissimilar metals can lead to corrosion over time. Good luck with your rebuilds.

    • @barryrobison2073

      My initial thought would be to use aluminum rivets. I have heard of corrosion issues when using "dissimilar metals". I would check with the source where you buy your rivets. Hopefully, they would know for sure.

    This method looks to not seal the rivets very well? I'd stick with the rivet tool made for riveting. This method is unreliable in my opinion. The inner mount don't look as flush as with a dedicated rivet gun. Unless you're an expert and can drive a straight rivet each time regardless the angle you are trying to work with!

      Either type of rivet works as long as it is done correctly. Solid rivets are much more structural.
